THE PHILOSOPHER'S BANQUET Plutarch's Table Talk in the Intellectual Culture of the Roman Empire
Upper corners bumped else fine. ; 288 pages; The Philosopher's Banquet is the first sustained study of Plutarch's Table Talk, a Greek prose text which is a combination of philosophical dialogue (in the style of Plato's Symposium) and miscellany. The form of Table Talk was imitated by several later Greek and Roman imperial authors (such as Aulus Gellius, Athenaeus, and Macrobius) , making it a vital part of the early Roman Empire's literary and cultural history. Similarly, the great variety of its contents links it with a broader imperial cultural trend, that of systematizing knowledge, which features increasingly prominently as a subject of scholarly study in both classics and the history of science. The contributors to The Philosopher's Banquet offer a range of methodologically innovative and sophisticated readings of Table Talk's literary form, themes, cultural background, and influence.

Oedipus at Thebes : Sophocles' Tragic Hero and His Time
" Eminent classicist Bernard Knox examines Sophocles's Oedipus Tyannus in the context of fifth-century B.C. Athens. In attempting to discover what the play meant to Sophocles and his contemporaries--disentangled from Freud's psychoanalytical interpretations--Knox casts fresh light on its timeless and universal nature." 279p. bibliography. index. The Oldest Dead White European Males And Other Reflections on the Classics
" In three erudite essays originally delivered as lectures, Knox stresses the relevance of the ancient Greeks (the "dead white males" of the title) to the modern world. Former director of Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies, Knox defends the modern teaching of the humanities as "an education for democracy." While acknowledging the inferior status of women in ancient Greek society, he argues that women were a formidable presence in the household, and he finds in Greek epics, poetry and drama a wealth of assertive, active females. Knox portrays the Sophists, who taught rhetoric and poetry, as "the first professors of the humanities." It was the Sophists, not Socrates, who "brought theory down from the skies," he insists. He closes with an account of his year-long stay in Greece, where he found living ties between the country's ancient and contemporary language and culture. 144p Book

The Norton Book of Classical Literature
"For most of us classical writing is little more than a narrow circle of legendary figures. The names of Homer, Aeschylus, Plato, Virgil, and Saint Augustine are familiar, but behind their work lies a vast fellowship of writers with a common mythological and artistic heritage. 'The Norton Book of Classical Literature' includes not only the "greats" but also significant though lesser known figures and traditions: archaic lyric poets, Alexandrian Greeks, and Roman satirists, for example. The translations selected for this collection, from classic nineteenth-century versions to as yet unpublished manuscripts, reflect the diversity of the works themselves and bring them to us with eloquence and clarity." Clean crisp and tight , no marks 866p. index.(Large heavy volume - weighs 2.65 pounds) Book

Knudsen, Rachel Ahern
HOMERIC SPEECH AND THE ORIGINS OF RHETORIC
Top corners a bit bumped. Else book is fine. ; Traditionally, Homer's epics have been the domain of scholars and students interested in ancient Greek poetry, and Aristotle's rhetorical theory has been the domain of those interested in ancient rhetoric. Rachel Ahern Knudsen believes that this academic distinction between poetry and rhetoric should be challenged. Based on a close analysis of persuasive speeches in the Iliad, Knudsen argues that Homeric poetry displays a systematic and technical concept of rhetoric and that many Iliadic speakers in fact employ the rhetorical techniques put forward by Aristotle. Rhetoric, in its earliest formulation in ancient Greece, was conceived as the power to change a listener’s actions or attitudes through words? Particularly through persuasive techniques and argumentation. Rhetoric was thus a "technical" discipline in the ancient Greek world, a craft ( technê) that was rule-governed, learned, and taught. This technical understanding of rhetoric can be traced back to the works of Plato and Aristotle, which provide the earliest formal explanations of rhetoric. But do such explanations constitute the true origins of rhetoric as an identifiable, systematic practice? If not, where does a technique-driven rhetoric first appear in literary and social history? Perhaps the answer is in Homeric epics. Homeric Speech and the Origins of Rhetoric demonstrates a remarkable congruence between the rhetorical techniques used by Iliadic speakers and those collected in Aristotle's seminal treatise on rhetoric. Knudsen's claim has implications for the fields of both Homeric poetry and the history of rhetoric. In the former field, it refines and extends previous scholarship on direct speech in Homer by identifying a new dimension within Homeric speech? Namely, the consistent deployment of well-defined rhetorical arguments and techniques. In the latter field, it challenges the traditional account of the development of rhetoric, probing the boundaries that currently demarcate its origins, history, and relationship to poetry. ; 248 pages

The Glorious Foods of Greece: Traditional Recipes from Islands Cities and Villages
New York: William Morrow & Co 2001 "The Glorious Foods of Greece is the magnum opus of Greek cuisine the first book that takes the reader on a long and fascinating journey beyond the familiar Greece of blue-and-white postcard images and ubiquitous grilled fish and moussaka into the country's many different regions where local customs and foodways have remaained intact for eons. The journey is both personal and inviting. Diane Kochilas spent nearly a decade crisscrossing Greece's Pristine mountains mainland and islands visiting cooks bakers farmers shepherds fishermen artisan producers of cheeses charcuterie olives olive oil and more in order to document the country's formidable culinary traditions. The result is a paean to the hitherto uncharted glories of local Greek cooking and regional lore that takes you from mountain villages to urban tables to seaside tavernas and island gardens. In beautiful prose and with more than four hundred unusual recipes -- many of them never before recorded -- invites us to a Greece few visitors ever get to see. Along the way she serves up feast after feast of food history and culture from a land where the three have been intertwined since time immemorial. In an informed introduction she sets the historic framework of the cuisine so that we clearly see the differences among the earthy mountain cookery the sparse ingenious island table and the sophisticated aromaticcooking traditions of the Greeks in diaspora. In each chapter she takes stock of the local pantry and cooking customs. From the olive-laden Peloponnesos she brings us such unusual dishes as One-Pot Chicken Simmered with Artichokes and served with Tomato-Egg-Lemon Sauce and Vine Leaves Stuffed with Salt Cod. From the Venetian-influenced Ionian islands she offers up such delights asPastry-Cloaked Pasta from Corfu filled with cheese and charcuterie and delicious Bread Pudding from Ithaca with zabaglione. Her mainland recipes as well as those that hail from Greece's impenetrable northwestern mountains offer an enticing array of dozens of delicious savory pies unusual greens dishes and succulent meat preparations such as Lamb with Garlic and Cheese Baked in Paper. In Macedonia she documents the complex perfumed urbane cuisine that defines that region. In the Aegean islands she serves up a wonderful repertory of exotic yet simple foods reminding us how accessible -- and healthful -- is the Greek fegional table. The result is a cookbook unlike any other that has ever been written on Greek cuisine one that brims with the author's love and knowledge of her subject a tribute to the vibrant multifaceted continuum of Greek cooking both highly informed and ever inviting.
