ALEXANDER THE GREAT The Invisible Enemy: A Biography
Very light shelfwear. ; 360 pages; Despite Alexander the Great's unprecedented accomplishments, during the last seven years of his life, this indomitable warrior became increasingly unpredictable, sporadically violent, megalomaniacal, and suspicious of friends as well as enemies. What could have caused such a lamentable transformation? This biography seeks to answer that question by assessing the role of alcohol in Alexander the Great's life, using the figure of Dionysus as a symbol of its destructive effects on his psyche. The unique methodology employed in this book explores various aspects of Alexander's life while maintaining an historical framework. The exposition of the main theme is handled in such a way that the biography will appeal to general readers as well as scholars.

DEATH AND THE OPTIMISTIC PROPHECY IN VERGIL'S AENEID
Minor Soiling to foreedges of about 5 pages. Dampstaining to lower corners of boards. Gift inscription [from author? ] to R. E. Fantham: "For Elaine, with thanks and hospitality Jim" in pencil to ffep. Else book is VG. DJ spine sunned. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Here James O'Hara shows how the deceptive nature of prophecy in the Aeneid complicates assessment of the poem's attitude toward its hero's achievement and toward the future of Rome under Augustus Caesar. This close study of the language and rhetorical context of the prophecies reveals that they regularly suppress discouraging material: the gods send promising messages to Aeneas and others to spur them on in their struggles, but these struggles often lead to untimely deaths or other disasters only darkly hinted at by the prophecies. O'Hara finds in these prophecies a persistent subtext that both stresses the human cost of Aeneas' mission and casts doubt on Jupiter's promise to Venus of an "endless empire" for the Romans. O'Hara considers the major prophecies that look confidently toward Augustus' Rome from the standpoint of Vergil's readers, who, like the characters within the poem, must struggle with the possibility that the optimism of the prophecies of Rome is undercut by darker material partially suppressed. The study shows that Vergil links the deception of his characters to the deceptiveness of Roman oratory, politics, and religion, and to the artifice of poetry itself. In response to recent debates about whether the Aeneid is optimistic or pessimistic, O'Hara argues that Vergil expresses both the Romans' hope for the peace of a Golden Age under Augustus and their fear that this hope might be illusory. ; 224 pages

Balance weights in the Aegean world. Classical and Hellenistic periods. Translated from Turkish into English by Inci Türkoglu.
New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [x], 210 p., color ills. 300 copies were printed. Balance weights in the Aegean world. Classical and Hellenistic periods. Translated from Turkish into English Inci Türkoglu. Historically, balance weights are as old as the balances themselves. Actually, balance and weight examples of Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hittite civilisations are known from wall paintings, reliefs, papyri and collections. However, the scope of this book is the balance weights produced and used in the Aegean world during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Balance weights were among the instruments of public sphere (instrumenta publica) of antiquity and they constitute an important group of antiquities worth studying for their unit marks, symbols, depictions, inscriptions and ornaments. However, balance weights have been among the most neglected artefacts within archaeological research. Certainly, this work at handbook level should not be expected to fill the gap entirely, but rather call attention to this field. The examples were chosen from the city-states in the Aegean world and cover only those which bear ethnic or symbol (parasemon). CONTENTS: FOREWORD. INTRODUCTION. Scope, material, and sources. History of research in the light of basic publications. 1. AN OVERVIEW OF WEIGHTS: Form, material, and manufacture. Symbols (parasema) and other depictions. Denominations. Ethnic. Corpus Ponderum Antiquorum et Islamicorum Turkey 3: Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Collection at the Pera Museum. Part 2: Late Roman and Byzantine weights.
New English Original bdg. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). In English. Color ills. [x], [1], 226 p., ills. Corpus Ponderum Antiquorum et Islamicorum Turkey 3: Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Collection at the Pera Museum. Part 2: Late Roman and Byzantine weights. There are over five thousand weights from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Collection at the Pera Museum, ranging in date from the Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. This large collection will be published in a number of separate volumes as part of the series of Corpus Ponderum Antiquorum et Islamicorum. The first volume covers 635 Greek and Roman weights. The Roman truncated spheres are included in the second volume, which covers the Late Roman and Byzantine weights. The majority of the weights in the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Collection were acquired over a period of thirty years by Inan Kirac through various local and international auctions and collectors. The present second volume, completed in a three-year-long study, covers the Late Roman and Byzantine weights in the same collection. The catalogue covers 742 weights, 38 of which are of glass. The majority of the weights were acquired between 2005 and 2008. In the catalogue 201 weights are grouped under the title of "Commercial Weights" while 456 weights are grouped under the title of "Coin Weights". Furthermore, the catalogue covers circular weights with concentric circles and bowl-shaped weights both of which date to the Middle Byzantine Period.
