THE BRONZE TABLES OF IGUVIUM
Minor shelfwear. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). ; The Iguvine Tables were a series of seven bronze tablets discovered at Iguvium, contemporary Gubbio, in Italy in the year 1444. The earliest tablets were probably written in the 3rd century BC in the native Umbrian alphabet, the latest in the 1st century BC in the Latin alphabet. The tablets contain religious inscriptions that memorialize the acts and rites of the Atiedian Brethren, a group of 12 priests of Jupiter with important municipal functions at Iguvium. They are written in the Umbrian language, one of the Italic languages, a not-too-distant relative of Latin. They shed light on the grammar of this ancient dead language, and also on the religious practices of classical paganism. They appear to be written in an accentual metre, similar to the Saturnian metre that is encountered in the earliest Latin poetry. Includes Grammar, text, translation and extensive commentary. ; Philological Monographs, Number XVII; 333 pages

THE SHADOW OF SPARTA
408 pages; The past 20 years have witnessed a revival of interest in the study of Sparta. The early 20th-century images of Spartans as hearty good fellows or scarlet-cloaked automata, have been superceded by more complex scholarly interpretations of this obscure civilization. The mystery surrounding Sparta has been instrumental in shaping scholarship on the subject. Historians have taken as much interest in the myths and disinformation attached to Sparta as they have in the truth about their city-state. The studies in this volume provide insights into the traditional question of what actually happened at Sparta. Yet the implications of this work go far beyond Laconia to focus on some of the most studied of Greek writers, showing how Athenians defined the achievement, or the failure, of their own city.

Staining to textblock and paper has become stuck to bottom of front board. DJ has scuffing and some adhesive remains. Light bumping to corners and edges otherwise VG. ; Who invented the Greek alphabet and why? The purpose of this challenging book is to inquire systematically into the historical causes that underlay the radical shift from earlier and less efficient writing systems to the use of alphabetic writing. The author reaches the conclusion that a single man, perhaps from the island of Euboea, invented the Greek alphabet specifically in order to record the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer. ; 9.5 x 1 x 6.5 Inches; 306 pages
