‎SINGERS, HEROES, AND GODS IN THE ODYSSEY‎

‎Tiny black dot to front wrap else fine. ; One of the special charms of the Odyssey, according to Charles Segal, is the way it transports readers to fascinating places. Yet despite the appeal of its narrative, the Odyssey is fully understood only when its style, design, and mythical patterns are taken into account as well. Bringing a new richness to interpretation of this epic, Segal looks closely at key forms of social and personal organization which Odysseus encounters in his voyages. Segal also considers such topics as the relationship between bard and audience, the implications of the Odyssey's self-consciousness about its own poetics, and Homer's treatment of the nature of poetry. ; Myth and Poetics; 0.88 x 9.35 x 6.28 Inches; 244 pages‎

‎HELLENISTIC INFANTRY REFORM IN THE 160'S BC‎

‎Very minor shelfwear else Fine. ; Studies in the Ancient and Medieval Art of Warfare V; 189 pages; Sekunda argues that in the 160s BC, the Ptolemaic and Seleucid infantry were reorganized to make them more successful and more competitive against the might of the Romans. This Romanization of the military took the form of new tactics and changes in the organization and in the equipment given to the soldier, with evidence coming from archaeological, literary, epigraphic and iconographic sources. Sekunda looks at the pre-Romanized organization of the infantry providing the necessary background history to the later reforms.‎

‎Corcyra. A City at the Edge of Two Greek Worlds‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 2 vols, 747 pages, Size:170 x 240 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9789607905970.‎

‎Summary The current monograph on Corcyrean history has the aim of offering a synthesis on the history of the island from the time of the Liburnian tribe of the Kerkyres, after which the island was named, to the end of the ancient world and the destruction of the temples of the Greek gods by ????????, the local episkopos. For this reason, it takes into consideration all available evidence deriving from Greek and Latin literary sources, epigraphic documents, Corcyrean coinage and archaeological excavations on the island of Corcyra. All aspects of Corcyrean history are discussed: the geography of the island, the relations with Corinth, Athens, the kings of Epirus and, finally, the Romans, its position in the international politics, the numerous staseis, its institutions, the Corcyrean navy, the island's legendary background and religious life, its coinage and numismatic policy. Prosopography, onomastics and name-giving practices are also discussed as well as Corcyrean society. Finally, different readings of some significant events of Greek history involving Corcyra are discussed: Corcyrean power, the Corcyreans at the sea battle of Salamis, Corcyra and the network of Corinthian colonies in the North West, the beginning of the Peloponnesian War and the real causes of this war, Corcyra during the Peloponnesian War, insularity, geographic position and their impact on the history and shaping of identity of the city-island? The first volume analyzes its geographical location, history, economy and monetary policy (chs I-XII), institutions, legendary background, identity and religious life (chs XIII, XIV, XV). The second volume studies Corcyrean prosopography (XVI), onomastics (XVII) and society (XVIII). This volume also contains lists of names, three Appendices, bibliography and different indices, plates depicting coins of Corcyra, and a map of the island.‎

‎THE APEIRON OF ANAXIMANDER A Study in the Origin and Function of Metaphysical Ideas‎

‎Light shelfwear to book. Light tanning to pages. ; This study is founded upon an examination of technical problems of textual exegesis and testimony surrounding Axaximander's Apeiron. Includes discussion of controversial ideas within classical scholarship, the author's further purpose is to analyse the 'key idea' of the first Greek philosopher in terms of the function which it performed in his cosmological scheme and of the evolution of early Greek thought from the stage of mythical notions and beliefs to that of distinctly philosophical inquiry. Dr. Seligman offers a new interpretation of the main phases of Hesiod's Theogony, and an illuminating account of the relation between on the one hand abstract and metaphysical and on the other concrete, representational thinking. ; 181 pages‎

‎A 'Compassionate' episode in Anglo - Ottoman history: British relief to the '93 refugees, (1877-78).‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 13,5 cm). In English. 213 p. Ills. The 1877-78 Russo-Turkish War, known in Turkish sources by its Rumi date: '93 Harbi, has been thoroughly studied through political and military lenses. The mass exodus of hundreds of thousands of Ottoman subjects before the advancing Russian armies was a major humanitarian calamity, one with possibly more long-term historical consequences than the mere shifting of borders. Despite its significance, it has received relatively humble attention in the pages of history. This book attempts to illuminate a lesser known aspect of this subject, in particular, the general voluntary relief efforts on the part of the British people for the Ottoman refugees (the '93 Refugees). This book covers the activities of both the institutions and the prominent figures of this endeavor, against the background of humanitarian diplomacy. In doing so, it provides the reader with an intimate look into a "compassionate" episode in late 19th century Anglo-Ottoman history.‎
