GREECE AND THE PERSIANS
This account traces each stage of the critical struggle between the Persian Empire and the early Greek states, from the first clashes to the miraculous return home of 10,000 Greek mercenaries stranded in the heart of Persia. Carefully examined sources and placing events within their geographical and historical contexts, the author attempts to define cultural and political differences between the two peoples. His balanced, questioning approach places fresh emphasis on the Persian perspective and will provide an accessible and informed introduction to the period. ; Classical World Series; 101 pages

HOMER AND THE ARTISTS Text and Picture in Early Greek Art
Very minor shelfwear. ; This is a study of the works of art from early Greece that have long been presented as "illustrations to Homer, " but that are argued here to be nothing of the kind. Early Greek artists showed no preference for Homeric subjects and, when their interests did coincide with Homer's, treated his account as, at best, one of the possible variants. Close descriptive analysis of texts and pictures and of the artists' aims, together with statistical evidence, provide the basis for the argument. ; 0.43 x 8.29 x 5.91 Inches; 200 pages

AN ARCHAEOLOGY OF GREECE The Present State and Future Scope of a Discipline
Very light shelfwear. ; Sather Classical Lectures 53; 236 pages; Classical archaeology probably enjoys a wider appeal than any other branch of classical or archaeological studies. As an intellectual and academic discipline, however, its esteem has not matched its popularity. Here, Anthony Snodgrass argues that classical archaeology has a rare potential in the whole field of the study of the past to make innovative discoveries and apply modern approaches by widening the aims of the discipline.

BLACKS IN ANTIQUITY Ethiopians in the Greco-Roman Experience
Shelfwear to book. Faint creasing to wraps. Spine sunned. Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). Light pencilling to a few pages. ; Xxii, 364pp, illustrated. The Africans who came to ancient Greece and Italy participated in an important chapter of classical history. Although evidence indicated that the alien dark- and black-skinned people were of varied tribal and geographic origins, the Greeks and Romans classified many of them as Ethiopians. In an effort to determine the role of black people in ancient civilization, Mr. Snowden examines a broad span of Greco-Roman experience--from the Homeric era to the age of Justinian--focusing his attention on the Ethiopians as they were known to the Greeks and Romans. The author dispels unwarranted generalizations about the Ethiopians, contending that classical references to them were neither glorifications of a mysterious people nor caricatures of rare creatures. Mr. Snowden has probed literary, epigraphical, papyrological, numismatic, and archaeological sources and has considered modern anthropological and sociological findings on pertinent racial and intercultural problems. He has drawn directly upon the widely scattered literary evidence of classical and early Christian writers and has synthesized extensive and diverse material. Along with invaluable reference notes, Mr. Snowden has included over 140 illustrations which depict the Negro as the Greeks and Romans conceived of him in mythology and religion and observed him in a number of occupations--as servant, diplomat, warrior, athlete, and performer, among others. Presenting an exceptionally comprehensive historical description of the first major encounter of Europeans with dark and black Africans, Mr. Snowden found that the black man in a predominantly white society was neither romanticized nor scorned--that the Ethiopian in classical antiquity was considered by pagan and Christian without prejudice. ; 364 pages

Anatomy of Arcadia
'...an account of a year spent on the Greek island of Paxos." "His wry and beautifully written excursion into a dystopian Arcadia is rooted in his sardonic wit and the pitiless eye that he turns on modern Greece, on modern Greeks, and, not the least, on himself." (this copy marred by underlinings and comments from a previous reader- some of which, however, are quite interesting-) Book
