‎Cookbook of the Jews of Greece‎

‎Athens: Lycabettus Press 2005 New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece The Cookbook of the Jews of Greece is more than a cookbook for in addition to the 287 recipes some unique and others unusual variations on familiar Persian Arab Turkish and Greek dishes it is lavishly illustrated by the author with over 60 drawings of Jewish life throughout Greece and documented with descriptions of local customs and traditions that were the settings for a rich and varied cuisine. Greek Jewish cooking is the product of Jewish life in four great empires. The Jews have lived in Greece for over 2000 years as one succeeded another: the Alexandrine the Roman the Byzantine and the Ottoman. From each they took something and made it their own. Beginning in the 15th century Jewish exiles from the expulsions of Spain and Portugal and later from the violence of eastern Europe came to Ottoman ruled Greece and created one of the greatest Jewish cities in history. Salonika reigned as "Queen of Israel" for over four hundred years until it fell victim to the Nazi Holocaust. What remains today in Greece are the memories of survivors from the last generation of Salonika's reign and of 2000 years of Greek Jewish life. The recipes for the Cookbook of the Jews of Greece were painstakingly gathered from these survivors in retirement homes and family homes throughout Greece by Nicholas Stavroulakis formerly director of the Jewish Museum of Greece. He has brought his own varied background to bear on the cookbook's creation. His family is of mixed Cretan Jewish and Turkish origins. He is an artist and a cook. He has exhibited widely in Europe and the United States and has illustrated numerous books. After being educated in Great Britain and the United States he taught at Tel Aviv University before returning to Greece to become the director of the Jewish museum in Athens. 267 pages illustrated with bibliography and index hardback. Reissue. Hard Cover. New Book from Greece/New. Lycabettus Press hardcover‎

‎HOMER & THE ILIAD An Essay to Determine the Scope and Character of the Original Poem‎

‎Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Pages tanned. Light shelfwear to boards. ; The purpose of this study is to provide a description of the Greek particle per as it occurs in the text of Homer. As such it is a contribution to the study of Ancient Greek in general and of the Greek' particles in particular. But the work transgresses the boundaries of Greek linguistics' proper. First, the discussion of per as a scalar article contributes to the discussion of scalar phenomena in general. Second, as a description of a linguistic feature in the Iliad and Odyssey, metrical texts of oral-formulaic origin, this study is also an essay in the relation between linguistics on the one hand and formulas and metre on the other. ; 331 pages‎

‎Cinismo e Cristianesimo delle origini‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 236 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: Italian. ISBN 9782503607535.‎

‎Summary Gesù era Cinico? I suoi discepoli? E Paolo? ‎IMAGES IN MIND Statues in Archaic and Classical Greek Literature and Thought‎

‎Very faint crease through upper corner. Else minor shelfwear. ; In archaic and classical Greece, statues played a constant role in people's religious, political, economic, aesthetic, and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.' ‎THE TYRANT'S WRIT Myths and Images of Writing in Ancient Greece‎

‎Light shelfwear to book and DJ. ; 280 pages; Covering material as diverse as curse tablets, coins, tattoos, and legal decrees, Deborah Steiner explores the reception of writing in archaic and classical Greece. She moves beyond questions concerning ancient literacy and the origins of the Greek alphabet to examine representations of writing in the myths and imaginative literature of the period. Maintaining that the Greek alphabet was not seen purely as a means of transcribing and preserving the spoken word, the author investigates parallels between writing and other signifiers, such as omens, tokens, and talismans; the role of inscription in religious rites, including cursing, oath-taking, and dedication; and perceptions of how writing functioned both in autocracies and democracies. Particularly innovative is the suggestion that fifth-century Greek historians and dramatists portrayed writing as an essential tool of tyrants, who not only issue written decrees but also "inscribe" human bodies with brands and cut up land with compasses and rules. The despotic overtones associated with writing inform discussion of its function in democracies. Although writing could promote equal justice, ancient sources also linked this activity with historical and mythical figures who opposed the populist regime. By examining this highly nuanced portrayal of writing, Steiner offers a new perspective on ancient views of written law and its role in 5th-century Athenian democracy.‎

‎TRAGEDY OFFSTAGE Suffering and Sympathy in Ancient Athens‎

‎Tiny stain to ffep. Gift inscription from author to Jenifer Neils on ffep in ink. ; Humane ideals were central to the image Athenians had of themselves and their city during the classical period. Tragic plays, which formed a part of civic education, often promoted pity and compassion. But it is less clear to what extent Athenians embraced such ideals in daily life. How were they expected to respond, emotionally and pragmatically, to the suffering of other people? Under what circumstances? At what risk to themselves? In this book, Rachel Hall Sternberg draws on evidence from Greek oratory and historiography of the fifth and fourth centuries BCE to study the moral universe of the ancient Athenians: how citizens may have treated one another in times of adversity, when and how they were expected to help. She develops case studies in five spheres of everyday life: home nursing, the ransom of captives, intervention in street crimes, the long-distance transport of sick and wounded soldiers, and slave torture. Her close reading of selected narratives suggests that Athenians embraced high standards for helping behavior—at least toward relatives, friends, and some fellow citizens. Meanwhile, a subtle discourse of moral obligation strengthened the bonds that held Athenian society together, encouraging individuals to bring their personal behavior into line with the ideals of the city-state. ; 9.3 X 6.0 X 0.9 inches; 250 pages; Signed by Author‎

‎PITY AND POWER IN ANCIENT ATHENS‎

‎Gift inscription from author to Jenifer Neils on ffep in ink. Faint creasing to upper corner of a few pages. Minor chipping to DJ. ; Arguing that the exercise of power in democratic Athens, especially during its brief fifth-century empire, raised troubling questions about the alleviation and infliction of suffering, this book examines how pity emerged as a timely topic in Atheninan culture. Ten essays examine the role of pity in the literature, art, and society of classical Athens by analyzing evidence from tragedy, philosophy, historiography, epic, oratory, vase painting, sculpture, and medical writings. Athenians had power and used it ruthlessly, but the infliction of suffering did not mesh well with their civic self-images. ; 9.0 X 6.3 X 1.0 inches; 370 pages; Signed by Author‎

‎FACES OF POWER Alexander's Image and Hellenistic Politics‎

‎Light edgewear and faint creasing to DJ. ; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 545 pages; Alexander the Great changed the face of the ancient world. During his life and after his death, his image in works of art exerted an unprecedented influence on marbles, bronzes, ivories, frescoes, mosaics, coins, medals, even painted pottery and relief ware. Alexander's physiognomy became the most famous in history. But can we really know what meaning lies behind these images? Andrew Stewart demonstrates that these portraits wildly divergent in character, quality, type, provenance, date, and purpose actually transmit not so much a likeness of Alexander as a set of carefully crafted cliches that mobilize the notion "Alexander" for diverse ends and diverse audiences. Stewart discusses the portraits as studies in power and his original interpretation of them gives unprecedented fullness and shape to the idea and image called "Alexander."‎

‎PUBLIC OFFICE IN EARLY ROME Ritual Procedure and Political Practice‎

‎Light bump to bottom of spine. ; 9.5 x 1.25 x 6.5 Inches; 272 pages; <div>Studies of Roman politics have traditionally emphasized individual personalities or groups of personalities and have explained political behavior in terms of contests for individual power or group power. By contrast, Roberta Stewart focuses on being the religious institution of the "allotment" of duties among elected officials as a primary control on Roman politics. She examines in detail the procedure of allotment, the roles of popular election and allotment in defining public authority and duty, and the relationship between the Roman Senate and elected officials. Allotment is seen to reflect Republican ideology about the divine sanction of Roman leadership, military enterprise, and empire. <br></div><div>Allotment is examined in particular historical contexts, and the successive formations of public office in 444, 367, and 242 b. C. E. Are analyzed as a series of political solutions in an evolving cultural context. The discussion documents the ritual definition of allotments and the historical development of distinctive features of Republican political office: the equal authority of colleagues (collegiality) , the individual authority and accountability for an allotted function (provincia) , the procedural alternative to allotment (comparatio) , and the hierarchy of offices with imperium (the consuls and praetors). Public Office in Early Rome will be of great interest for scholars and students of Roman religion, government, and history. Roberta Stewart is Associate Professor of Classics, Dartmouth College.‎
