Lady with a Laptop
"Simon.is invited to the Greek Isle of Skagathos to teach overly enthusiastic would-be writers who have as much chance of actually publishing a book as Simon has of winning a Booker Prize. The summer colony, of which the writers are a part, has taken the tenets of the New Age to heart, whether in pursuit of the ever-elusive orgasm or of finding the magic key that will unlock their inner creativity. And Simon, as polite as he is randy, cannot quite bring himself to explain to his students that there is no neccessary connection between the price of one's computer and the quality of one's writing" Something of a send-up of the writer's school on Skyros. , indexThe controversial Thomas Cochrane, known to many as the "Sea Wolf", is second only to Nelson himself among the heroes and legends of the Royal Navy. Renowned for his daring, skill, and enterprise, Cochrane was much revered by his men and, remarkably enough, later went on to command ships in the navies of Chile, Brazil, Peru, and Greece, providing outstanding leadership in their struggles for freedom. As a Radical Member of Parliament and a staunch supporter of reform in its darkest hour, Cochrane stood on principle rather than on practicality and constantly found himself at the center of political firestorms.383p.+ plates, maps, bibliography, index Book

VIRGIL AND THE AUGUSTAN RECEPTION
Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Light bump to lower edge of front board. DJ has minor edgewear with 1 small tear. ; This book examines the ideological reception of Virgil at specific moments in the past two millennia. It focuses on the emperor Augustus in the poetry of Virgil, detects in the poets and grammarians of antiquity pro- and anti-Augustan readings, studies Dryden's 1697 Royalist translation, and also naive American translation. It scrutinizes nineteenth-century philology's rewriting or excision of troubling readings, and covers readings by both supporters and opponents of fascism and National Socialism. Finally it examines how successive ages have made the Aeneid conform to their upbeat expectations of this poet. ; 346 pages

READING VIRGIL AND HIS TEXTS Studies in Intertextuality
1 corner bumped. Minor shelfwear. Light pencil marginalia to a couple of pages. DJ has some minor creasing. ; There has long been vital interest in the ways that texts affect each other--through translation, imitation, parody, and other forms of emulation and subversion. Throughout the last two millennia, the Virgilian text has created its own intertextual heritage, persisting in the works of Eliot, Frost, Lowell, and Heaney. Richard F. Thomas's new volume demonstrates that such control and manipulation of the inherited tradition is to be found with great intensity in the very author who, in turn, created his own complex tradition. The articles and notes included in this volume have been selected for their diachronic aspect in addition to the synchronic status they had in their original context. Dealing with the intricate ways in which Virgil, and in the introductory chapter his predecessor Catullus, manipulated and appropriated their inherited Greek and Roman literary tradition, this book presents a coherent profile, through these detailed studies, of the mechanics of one of the most dynamic periods in the literary history of any culture. Richard Thomas--one of the most important voices in Latin literary studies today--shows little anxiety about objections to authorial intentionality. Throughout there is a working assumption that intertextual connections can be established and, further, that functions and purposes, even intended ones, may be inferred from those connections. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Greek and Latin literature but will also be of great value to students of medieval, Renaissance, and early modern vernacular literatures, most of whose poets see themselves as closely connected to Virgil. ; 360 pages

ORAL TRADITION AND WRITTEN RECORDS IN CLASSICAL ATHENS
Very minor shelfwear else Fine. ; Despite its written literature, ancient Greece was in many ways an oral society. This is the first serious attempt to study the implications of this view. Dr Thomas stresses the coexistence of literacy and oral tradition in Greece and examines their character and interaction. Concentrating on the plentiful evidence from Classical Athens, she shows how the use of writing developed only gradually and under the influence of the previous oral communication. Drawing on anthropological discussion, the author isolates different types of Athenian oral tradition, building up a picture of Athens' traditions about its past and examining why they changed and disappeared. This study provides crucial insights into the methods and achievements of the Greek historians. It also has major implications for the interpretation of ancient literacy. ; Cambridge Studies in Oral and Literate Culture; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 321 pages
