‎MURDER AMONG FRIENDS Violation of Philia in Greek Tragedy‎

‎Former owner's name on ffep. Light bump to base of spine. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Modern scholars have followed Aristotle in noting the importance of philia (kinship or friendship) in Greek tragedy, especially the large number of plots in which kin harm or murder one another. More than half of the thirty-two extant tragedies focus on an act in which harm occurs or is about to occur among philoi who are blood kin. In contrast, Homeric epic tends to avoid the portrayal of harm to kin. It appears, then, that kin killing does not merely occur in what Aristotle calls the "best" Greek tragedies; rather, it is a characteristic of the genre as a whole. In Murder Among Friends, Elizabeth Belfiore supports this thesis with an in-depth examination of the crucial role of philia in Greek tragedy. Drawing on a wealth of evidence, she compares tragedy and epic, discusses the role of philia relationships within Greek literature and society, and analyzes in detail the pattern of violation of philia in five plays: Aeschylus' Suppliants, Sophocles' Philoctetes and Ajax, and Euripides' Iphigenia in Tauris and Andromache. Appendixes further document instances of violation of philia in all the extant tragedies as well as in the lost plays of the fifth and fourth centuries B. C. E. ; 304 pages‎

‎GAMES AND FESTIVALS IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY‎

‎Very light shelfwear else Fine. ; BAR International Series 1220; 153 pages; The Greek and Roman year were divided into festivals and games even more than our year is today. Politics and competition went together and the spectacle and even danger of games and sports spiced up the lives of Greek and Roman citizens. This volume presents fourteen papers, half of which originated at a conference held in Edinburgh in 2000, which examine the archaeological, material and documentary evidence for ancient sports and festivals, making comparison between Greek and Roman habits and placing the events in their political and religious setting. Subjects include: Minoan bull sports; the evidence of dance imagery; Pindar; chariot racing and politics in 5th-century Athens and Sophocles' Electra; competitive Greek games; Dionysiac festivals in Aristophanes' Acharnians; cock fighting and dicing in classical Athens; the festival of Artemis Leukophyrene; Roman games and Greek origins in Dionysius of Halicarnassus; epic and real games in Statius and Virgil; Roman naumachiae or naval battles in artifical basins; Dionysiac scenes on Oinophoroi vessels from Sagalassos; Christianising the celebrations of death in Late Antiquity; the portraits of champions in Palazzo Te.‎

‎Foreign Influences: The Circulation of Knowledge in Antiquity‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, approx. 304 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 tables b/w., Language(s):English, French. ISBN 9782503598956.‎

‎Summary The essays collected in this volume focus on the Ancient Greeks' perception of foreigners and of foreign lands as potential sources of knowledge. They aim at exploring the hypothesis that the most adventurous intellectuals saw foreign lands and foreigners as repositories of knowledge that the Greeks ????? had to engage with, in the hope of bringing back home valuables in the form of new ideas. It is a common place to state that the ?Greeks? displayed xenophobia, which is probably best exemplified in the binary and ethnocentric division of humanity in two groups: the Greek world (i.e., the hellenophones) and the others, the Barbarians - those who speak foreign languages. This attitude of insularism and defiance, however, did not hinder the curiosity of Greek and Roman societies towards strangers. Lycurgus, Pythagoras, Democritus, etc.: there is a long list of sages and philosophers who travelled around the world for a significant period of time. The Greeks had a rich and varied relationship with foreign lands and people, which made possible a real circulation of knowledge throughout the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic times; this is also true of the Roman Empire. Each of the articles included in this collective work explore one aspect of the ?stranger? as a possible source of knowledge, with contributions mostly focused on Plato, Xenophon, Democritus, Aristotle, Diogenes, Cicero and Galen. ‎Benardete, Seth‎

‎THE BOW AND THE LYRE A Platonic Reading of the Odyssey‎

‎Slight fading to DJ spine. ; In this exciting new interpretation of the "Odyssey", renowed scholar Seth Benardete suggests that Homer may have been the first to philosophize in a Platonic sense. He argues that the "Odyssey" concerns precisely the relation between philosophy and poetry and, more broadly, the rational and the irrational in human beings. In light of this possibility, Bernardete works back and forth from Homer to Plato to examine the relation between wisdom and justice and tries to recover an original understanding of philosophy that Plato, too, recovered by reflecting on the wisdom of the poet. At stake in his argument is no less than the history of philosophy and the ancient understanding of poetry. "The Bow and the Lyre" is a book that every classicist and historian of philosophy should have. ; 9.5 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 194 pages‎

‎Spine cover is split on one side and half of the other but still attached. Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. Rubbing to boards. Edgewear to corners. ; 256 pages; Antimachus of Colophon, Greek poet and grammarian, flourished about 400 BC. Scarcely anything is known of his life. His poetical efforts were not generally appreciated, although he received encouragement from his younger contemporary Plato (Plutarch, Lysander, 18). His chief works were: an epic Thebais, an account of the expedition of the Seven against Thebes and the war of the Epigoni; and an elegiac poem Lyde, so called from the poet's mistress, for whose death he endeavoured to find consolation telling stories from mythology of heroic disasters (Plutarch, Consul, ad Apoll. 9; Athenaeus xiii. 597). Antimachus was the founder of "learned" epic poetry, and the forerunner of the Alexandrian school, whose critics allotted him the next place to Homer. He also prepared a critical recension of the Homeric poems‎

‎The Dodecanese: Further Travels Among the Insular Greeks: Selected Writings of J. Theodore & Mabel V.A. Bent, 1885-1888 (3rd Guides)‎

‎A compilation of late-19th-century travel writings (with an archaeological/ethnographical bias) centred on the Greek Dodecanese islands (including Rhodes, Nissiros, Tilos, Karpathos, Patmos, and Astypalea). The authors are the British explorer J. Theodore Bent (1852-1897), devotedly supported by his wife Mabel Virginia Anna (1847-1929). Theodore Bent's first successful monograph was based on two winters spent in the Cycladic isles (1882/3 and 1883/4). " The Cyclades, or Life Among the Insular Greeks" was published in 1885 and has been rarely out of print since. It remains one of the most delightful accounts in English of the region, and few serious travellers and tourists to these islands fail to discover it.The Bents moved a little east and explored the islands now commonly referred to as the Greek Dodecanese. Theodore's Dodecanesian output was channelled ... into a wide range of articles, while Mabel completed three volumes of her personal Chronicles on their daily travels and travails. Now, 130 years later, his The Dodecanese can appear for the first time: a collection of reminiscences and studies on these sunny, blue-surrounded, and delightful islands. Preface' by Marc Dubin. Introduction by Gerald Brisch. 195p. Fully illustrated with maps and photographs. Book‎
