The Textus Receptus of the Greek New Testament and a typographic masterpiece of the French Renaissance. Both iconic Estienne woodcut printer's devices: B1 snake and tree on title-page and repeated on 273 and the classic St. Paul standing under an olive-tree on the last lead. Woodcut initials and headpieces woodcut borders for the canons all pages ruled in red. 504 pages: 32 272 i.e. 268 204. Eighteenth-century red straight-grained morocco gilt spine gilt in compartments edges gilt painted and gauffered matching red and gold. Robert Estienne held the office of royal printer and this is his masterpiece a luxurious folio printed using all three sizes of Claude Garamond's fine Greek fonts 20 point gros-parangon Royal Garamond used here for the first time for the main text as well as 16 point gros-romain and 9 point cicero for the marginalia and notes. The production of the gros-parangon type was paid for by King Henry II. Armstrong 52 Robert Proctor said of this Greek type that: "it was and is by far the best type of its kind that has ever been cut.for evenness of colour for precision of casting and for the exactness of alignment and justification these founts are unsurpassed." Updike 237. Truly lovely with only the following minor defects: title-page has a short closed tear deep in the gutter could be repaired but not necessary a few spots of minor staining but no foxing on a few pages and not in the text. Extremities rubbed consistent with an antique binding that has been used carefully -- boards showing a little at one corner and lightly here and there on the edges but the binding is completely sound and flexible and without bumps or any signs of misuse. Every page is complete and without edge tears or markings. This copy with excellent provenance: Archibald Acheson 3rd earl of Gosford 1806-1864 morocco booklabel William O'Brien 1832-1899 with his library bequest label dated 1899 and with a small accompanying library stamp on the title-page. <br/><br/> ROBERT ESTIENNE hardcover

With an engraved vignette on the title-pages and an engraved alphabet leaf at p.2; a little browned and dusty here and there. Contemporary red morocco very richly gilt gilt-panelled backstrips with black labels. § A superb copy of a renowned Greek edition of the Bible with a fascinating association. This copy was in the choice Greek library of Sophia Streatfeild; prior to that there is the bookplate of an earlier Streatfeild with their motto “Data Fata Sequutus†sic and the modern bookplate of Joseph M. Gleason whose library was at Lone Mountain College in San Francisco until they sold it en bloc to John Howell-Books who dispersed the books far and wide. This book recently turned up in a yard sale in Central California and was bought by a scout purportedly for $5.Sophia Streatfeild was a brilliant classical scholar a stunningly beautiful woman and a renowned flirt whose charms and amorous conquests were recorded at length by Hester Thrale with equal parts admiration and exasperation: “a Young Coquet whose sole Employment in this World seems to have been winning Men's hearts on purpose to fling them away. How She contrives to keep Bishops & Brewers & Doctors & Directors of the East India Company all in her Chains so—& almost all at a Time would amaze a wiser Person than me". Thrale’s own husband was one of the many much taken with Streatfeild as was Samuel Johnson although he apparently regarded Fanny Burney’s Greek scholarship higher. The DNB heads her entry simply “Streatfeild Sophia bap. 1755 d. 1835 beautyâ€. A women of fierce intellect and wild reputation she died unmarried at around 80 years of age and remains one of the period’s more enigmatic figures. Her entire Greek library all 43 volumes bound to match was sold by the Robinsons in 1935 for £195. It was #1 in their catalogue 56. Officina Dommeriana unknown

A scholar from the Westphalia region of Germany K�ster 1670�1716 specialized in paleography and Greek; this printing includes his preface and Prolegomena and extensive commentary in Latin below the main text. Using twelve new manuscripts in his research K�ster significantly added to Mill's 1645�1707 collation.<br> The title-page printed in red and black features an => engraved vignette of the Virgin Mary enthroned above the Earth flanked by an eagle a lion a bull and an angel representing the Four Evangelists and there are => five additional large illustrative engraved vignettes functioning as headpieces in the text. Printed double-column and divided in the middle of each page by a paragraph of citations the text is dotted by a variety of woodcut floriated and historiated initials and factotum Greek capitals.<br> Provenance: Front pastedown with pencilled inscription "C.B.P.B. 1709" and with bookplate of Newton Theological Institution properly deaccessioned noting gift from library of Edward Cushing Mitchell D.D. class of 1853. <br> <br> Darlow & Moule 4735. Contemporary mottled sheep rebacked some time ago; scuffed and worn front joint starting from head and foot extremities rubbed and chipped. Front pastedown with inscription and bookplate as above; two text pages institutionally pressure-stamped. Offsetting to margins of first and last few leaves; waterstaining to inner portions of first 80 and a few final pages touching but not obscuring text on some pages and a small area of the first headpiece. One proud corner folded over several other corners bumped; scattered spots of light staining and ink smears not obscuring sense; occasional small edge nick. colophon: Basileae: apvd Io Bebelium for Johann Schabler called Wattenschnee 1535. 8vo 16 cm 6.25". 8 367 1 ff. <br><br>Jakob Ceporinus 1499�1525 born Jakob Wiesendanger the editor of this Greek Testament was => a Swiss humanist who attended the universities of Cologne and Vienna and acquired knowledge of Hebrew by studying with the German humanist Johannes Reuchlin in Ingolstadt. He worked in Basel as a proofreader for a printing house settled in Zurich and in April of 1525 was appointed as => the first Reader of Greek and Hebrew at Zwingli's school of theology in Zurich. He died unexpectedly in December 1525.<br> The first edition of his Greek New Testament appeared in 1524 from the same printer as this third edition of 1535 and like that first closely follows the Erasmus third edition with a few variants and independent readings. Also as with the 1524 edition the title-page has => four woodcuts after Urs Graf representing the evangelists and that leaf is followed by Oecolampadius' "In sacrarum literarum lectionem . . . exhortatio" pi 2�7.<br> The work was published at the expense of Johann Schabler called Wattenschnee whose device with motto "Durum pacientia frango" is on the verso of last leaf. The Testament text is in Greek only and each book begins with a woodcut headpiece and a historiated initial with some initials after Dance of Death designs by => Hans Holbein.<br> Reuss lists this among "Editiones Erasmicae."<br> Provenance: 19th-century signature on front fly-leaf of W.C.S. Tole ; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard small booklabel "AHA" at rear. <br> <br> VD16 B4180; Adams B1653; Reuss Bibliotheca Novi Testamenti Graeci p. 33. II Epistles Revelation. <br><br>An interleaved and heavily annotated copy of the Gospels and Acts of "Beza's third major edition of the Greek New Testament. The text follows that of the second major edition 1582 with only five exceptions" Darlow and Moule. => One should note that the title-page proclaims this "quarta editio" and that this is Estienne's third folio printing of Beza's N.T.<br> Beza's New Testament Greek text is here accompanied by his Latin and the Vulgate i.e. Catholic Latin translations the trio appearing in parallel columns on each page with => extensive notes that often fill as much as one-third to one-half of a page and with parallel references additionally set in the margins. The volume's title-page is printed in red and black and bears Henri Estienne's printer's device; a different finely wrought woodcut headpiece opens each book with each column on those pages bearing a woodcut initial at its head and a few of the books of the N.T. end with woodcut tailpieces.<br> Evidence of readership: An interleaved copy with => the vast majority of the leaves bearing an early 19th-century reader's notes and annotations. The notes cite references published as late as 1809 and it is clear that the natively German-speaking scholar was comfortable in Greek Hebrew Latin and English.<br> Provenance: Ownership signature on title-page of Leon St. Vincent. Later in The Howell Bible Collection Pacific School of Religion properly released; no markings.<br> The paper stock used for the interleaving has the classic ProPatria watermark and that and its countermark match Churchill's 151 which has a starting date of 1799. <br> <br> Darlow & Moule 4650; Adams B1711. On the interleaves' watermarks see: Churchill Watermarks in paper in Holland England France etc. in the XVII and XVIII centuries. 19th-century half vellum with German pastepaper over boards spine with tinted and tooled label text recased and new endpapers; vol. I only of this production without the Epistles and Revelation. Title-page creased and dust-soiled all leaves before pp. 9/10 rodent-gnawed in lower outside corner with loss of paper but not of text or manuscript annotation and a bit of light waterstaining to rearmost leaves only. => An important edition and a singular copy.
