‎PERICLEAN ATHENS‎

‎Light foxing to textblock. DJ has tears and a couple of small pieces missing. ; The history of Athens in the fifth century is looked at to get an overall view of the essential elements that made up the Athenian triumphs of those years. The study centres on Athens in the time of Pericles and for a few years before and after him. The astonishing performance of these years calls for a wide survey - this shows the background against which the political events took place, especially the rise and development of the Athenian empire, the ideals for which it stood, the faults which it developed and the fierce opposition which it aroused. Pericles is the central figure and he gave the finest formulations of Athenian power, but he had opponents of whom something is known, and who were quite unscrupulous in their attacks. The failure of the Athenian empire, after its prodigious start, calls for examination. Some conventional ideas on the subject are certainly wrong and Pericles' successors were not as bad as has been maintained. The real hero of the story, however, is the Athenian people, who by founding the first real democracy and fighting to the end for it, showed how much it meant to them and what strength it gave to them. ; 310 pages‎

‎ROMAN EPIC‎

‎Very minor shelfwear to book. Small chips to top of spine. DJ has creasing and 1 tear (repaired with clear tape) along upper edge. ; 2 x 10 x 8 Inches; 340 pages; Roman epic lays firm claim to being Western civilization's prime literary form. Roman Epic draws together 14 critically and methodologically distinct essays, focusing on particular epicists, their reaction to, influence on, and rewriting of each other. The book examines the formation and transformation of Roman epic from its beginnings in the third century B. C. Saturnian poets Livius and Naevius to the Renaissance Latin epic of Petrarch and Vida. What results is the revelation of Roman epic not only as Rome's highest poetic genre but as a self-consciously intertextual, primarily political form. The Roman epicist's creative exploitation of his predecessors is not restricted to stylistic similarities and generic codes, but often encompasses more important levels of social, moral and political meaning. In the Roman tradition, the epic form shows an impetus to reform the celebratory values implicit in the form itself, admitting a plurality of interactive, often critical narrative voices. This book reveals how the epic developed and critically considers the generic and literary tradition to which the texts belong. It demonstrates epic's critical significance for the foundational culture of the Western world.‎

‎Literary Legacy of Byzantium. Editions, Translations, and Studies in Honour of Joseph A. Munitiz SJ‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, vi + 560 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:3 b/w, 7 col., Languages: English, French, Spanish. ISBN 9782503583549.‎

‎Summary Nineteen scholars join forces to pay tribute to one of the leading scholars in Byzantine studies, Father Joseph A. Munitiz. As one of the founders of the Series Graeca of the Corpus Christianorum and because of his own exemplary work, Joe Munitiz had and has a lasting impact on the development of Byzantine studies. There is no better way to honour him and his work than to offer him a Festschrift with contributions that mimic his quality, passion, and curiosity. The Festschrift contains several "firsts": the first English translation of Eustathius' Letter concerning the Two Natures against Severus, and the first critical editions (and studies) of an anonymous iambic canon on St John Chrysostom, of letter Z of the Etymologicum Symeonis, of some additions to letter A in the Florilegium Coislinianum, of a possible credo of Metrophanes of Smyrna, of a letter by Nicholas Pepagomenos to Gregory Palamas, and of Maximus Confessor's Tomos to Stephen of Dor against the Ekthesis. The innovative studies in this volume deal with the Slavonic and Greek catenae on the Song of Songs, with Athanasius' Letter to Marcelinus, with an ascetic miscellany in a thirteenth-century Atheniensis, with the so-called 'First Chapter Titles' in the second recension of the Florilegium Coislinianum, with the date of composition of the Maximian Corpus, with Raimundus Lullus' knowledge of Byzantium, with the reception of the Catalogue of Inventors in Gregory of Nazianzus' fourth oratio, and with Titus of Bostra's polemic against the Manicheans. ‎Questioning the World. Greek Patristic and Byzantine Question-and-Answer Literature‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 472 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:6 tables b/w., Language(s):English, French, Greek. ISBN 9782503590752.‎

‎Summary This volume discusses cosmological issues in Greek Patristic and Byzantine question-and-answer literature. By adopting this focus, it yields novel insights into both the (theological / philosophical) content and the (literary) form of the texts under scrutiny. How did Greek Patristic and Byzantine authors understand the cosmos of which they were a part and the world in which they lived? And what literary forms did they use to express their questions and answers on these issues? This collection of studies shows that, in order to bring out the important intellectual contribution of the authors under discussion, both 'cosmology' and 'question-and-answer literature' should be defined more broadly than expected. Several papers deal with the crucial corpora by Pseudo-Justin and Maximus the Confessor. Other authors under discussion include Philoponus, Pseudo-Caesarius, Michael Psellus, Severian of Gabala, and Nilus Doxopatres. Attention also goes to the critical edition of question-and-answer literature, as well as to the Greek Patristic and Byzantine reception of cosmological questions and answers from Antiquity (i.c. Aristotle, Philo of Alexandria, Plutarch, and Iamblichus). ‎LEONIDAS AND THE KINGS OF SPARTA Mightiest Warriors, Fairest Kingdom‎

‎Gift inscription in pen to ffep (likely from author) "In memory of the Sparta conference". Else book is fine. DJ flaps are creased. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Organized in a logical and chronological order, Leonidas and the Kings of Sparta: Mightiest Warriors, Fairest Kingdom describes the legendary origins of the dual kingship in Sparta, documents the many reigning eras of the kings, and then concludes with the time when the kingship was abolished six centuries later. The book examines the kings' roles in war and battle, in religion, in the social life of the city, and in formulating Spartan policy both at home and abroad. No other book on Sparta has concentrated on describing the role of the kings—and their absolutely essential contributions to Spartan society in general. ; 251 pages‎
