Couloumbis, Theodore
Greek Junta Phenomenon : A Professor's Notes
"'Greeces twentieth-century history, not unlike that of a large portion of the rest of Europe, has been marked by frequent wars, economic underdevelopment, deep political fissures, political clientelism, and frequent as well as competing foreign intervention in the country's domestic affairs. In political science terms, the countrys democratic system was less than consolidated, in the sense that it was marked by frequent military intervention in politics. This book reconstructs Greeces melancholy political landscape during the dark years of the colonels dictatorship. The author conducted scores of interviews with prominent political figures (e.g., Constantine Karamanlis, Andreas Papandreou, Panayiotis Kanellopoulos, Constantine Mitsotakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Georgios Mavros, Archbishop Makarios and former King Constantine). He also met with some functionaries representing the Greek junta and with a number of American diplomats. These interviews, recorded over thirty years ago, mirror the attitudes and mentalities of political protagonists of that time and could be treated as primary source material for historians who still need to produce a detached and dispassionate record of those trying times." 344p. index Book

Greek political reaction to American and NATO influences
"This examination of an alliance is unusual in presenting the point of view of the smaller partner. A Greek politician described the situation succinctly in 1952, "We exist not only thanks to our own decision, but because the Americans exist." A survey of the situation in the post World War era where "Greece has been a partner in NATO primarily for political, strategic, economic and geographical reasons so foreign policy is based on national self interest" x, 250p. index Author inscription on ffep. Council Greek American
National Liberation Front - E. A. M. White Book May 1944 - March 1945
Greek American Council. 1945. Flexible boards. B003Z49P7M . Clean and intact withdrawn from a library. Library markings are minimal. The book is in a binder which has pulled away from the spine but the binding is sound. The book is not typeset. Since it was pulished in the pre-Xerox age I suppose it was mimeographed. However it is quite legible and the pages are toned but not fragile. The book is noted as having originated in Trikkala Greece on Feb. 1st 1945 and been reprinted in Athens. I have no idea what this means exactly but this looks like a primary source for the scholar researching Greece in World War II. Fast shipping with tracking number provided. ; Ex-Library . THE FRAGMENTARY LATIN POETS Edited with Commentary
Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Else very light shelfwear to book. DJ has a bit of foxing. ; To understand fully the development of Latin poetry, one has to consider not only the prominent figures whose works survive entire but also the writers known to us only in fragments from quotations. The fragments of the non-dramatic poets have been collected by Baehrens, Morel, and Buchner, but only a few have ever received a commentary. This book revises the texts, taking advantage of much earlier work now largely forgotten, and provides the necessary interpretative and illustrative material. Some writers not usually included in this corpus are here covered, such as the minor works of Ennius. ; 560 pages

THE ROLE OF THE PARROT IN SELECTED TEXTS FROM OVID TO JEAN RHYS Telling a Story from an Alternative Viewpoint
One small bump along top edge of board else Fine. ; 9 x 0.75 x 6.25 Inches; 227 pages; This book features the efforts of a group of academics from diverse disciplines that have been working together to highlight the presence of the parrot in selected texts across the centuries. Their common purpose is to demonstrate that fictional parrots invariably function as more than decoration, comedy or badges denoting the eccentricity of their human owners. These versatile and talented birds function as markers for subtle literary techniques. Using the parrot as an interpretative tool the focus is on a range of narrative strategies and metaphorical meanings employed by the authors in question and argue that these are embodied in the attributes of the speaking bird who figures significantly in each work. Contents: 1. Two Poetic and Parodic Parrots in Latin Literature by Paula James 2. ‘A Byrde of Paradyse’: - Skelton’s Speke Parot and the Parrots of its Context by Susan Purdie 3. The Nunnery Parrot: Gresset’s Ver-Vert and his English translators by John Gilmore 4. The View from the Perch: Flaubert’s Loulou by Julia Courtney 5. Parrot as Paradigm: Stevenson and others by Julia Courtney 6. Parrots in Children’s Fiction by Hilary Clare 7. Coco: A Parrot of Few Words in Wide Sargasso Sea by Paula James 8. THE PLAY OF TEXTS AND FRAGMENTS Essays in Honour of Martin Cropp
3 tiny scratches along top edge-- very light shelfwear else Fine. ; Mnemosyne Supplements 314; 580 pages; This volume is arguably one of the most important studies of Euripides to appear in the last decade. Not only does it offer incisive examinations of many of Euripides' extant plays and their influence, it also includes seminal examinations of a number of Euripides’ fragmentary plays. This approach represents a novel and exciting development in Euripidean studies, since it is only very recently that the fragmentary plays have begun to appear in reliable and readily accessible editions. The book’s thirty-two contributors constitute an international 'who’s who' of Euripidean studies and Athenian drama, and their contributions will certainly feature in the forefront of scholarly discourse on Euripides and Greek drama for years to come.

HOUSEHOLD INTERESTS Property, Marriage Strategies, and Family Dynamics in Ancient Athens
Book is fine. DJ has very minor shelfwear. ; Explores the nature of the Greek household "oikos" in classical Athens. Whereas the "oikos" traditionally has been defined as the household of the nuclear family in Greece, this text argues that it had a more fluid structure, taking care to distinguish between the concepts of "household" and "family". The legal basis of the typical elite household emerges in the description of marriage patterns or strategies among the families represented in Attic orations and funeral inscriptions. Property interests were a strong motivating force, with the elite marrying within their kin, primariliy thorugh paternal lines in which property was transferred. The author argues that the household was not limited to "family" or kinspeople. Friends, neighbours, concubines or prostitutes, and slaves also shared in property interests and all could have a profound influence on the household. ; 253 pages

Crane, David
Lord Byron's Jackal : a Life of Edward John Trelawny
This biography investigates the life and phenomenon of Edward John Trelawny - writer, adventurer, romantic and friend to Shelley and Byron. Trelawny's is a story where the boundaries between fantasy and reality were blurred with fatal consequences. It is a story inextricably linked with Byron, and with the Greek War of Independence - a war which provided both Romantic Europe and Edward Trelawny with their most extravagant challenge. The story of Trelawny's role in the war, his cave, and his discovery of Odysseus' treasure has all the ingredients of a Byronic romance. It is a story of betrayal and greed, of deluded idealism and physical courage played out against one of the most ferocious wars even the Balkans has seen. 398p. plates bibliography.index Book

CRATERUS: THE FRAGMENTS FROM HIS COLLECTION OF ATHENIAN DECREES De Crateri Psephesmaton Synagoge E De Locis Aliquot Plutarchi Ex Ea Petitis
Text is lightly toned. Minor shelfwear to boards. ; Unchanged Reprint of 1888 Edition. Text is in Latin. ; 0.5 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 106 pages; Craterus the Macedonian historian was brother of Antigonus II Gonatas, and father of Alexander (prince of Corinth). He distinguished himself as a diligent compiler of historical documents relating to the history of Attica. He made a collection of Attic inscriptions, containing decrees of the people (psephismaton synagoge) and out of them he seems to have constructed a diplomatic history of Athens. This work is frequently referred to by Harpocration and Stephanus of Byzantium, the latter of whom (s. V. Nymphaion quotes the ninth book of it. With the exception of the statements contained in these and other passages, the work of Craterus, which must have been of great value, is lost.

SOURCES FOR ANCIENT HISTORY With Contributions from Emilio Gabba, Fergus Millar, Anthony Snodgrass
Wraps have yellowing. Minor shelfwear. Scholar's name to ffep (Catherine Rubincam). ; If a scholar wishes to create a picture of a topical society in all its aspects, there is little of what he needs to know that he cannot know, although there may still be much that he cannot understand. For the history of Greece and Rome, there is a great deal that is simply unknowable. From the end of the archaic age of Greece, there is an unbroken sequence of works by Greek and, later, Roman historians down to the end of antiquity. Their vision and range of interest were often limited and much of what they produced has been lost. Some help may be derived from the documentary material supplied in antiquity, material that was the product of officials organising public activities, or heads of families organising their affairs, or individuals leaving their mark on the world. Beyond this, the evidence of archaeology and numismatics may also be helpful. The four essays in this book set out to characterise the nature of the ancient literary tradition, the inscriptional material, the archaeological and numismatic evidence and to explain how and for what purposes they may be used. Chapters on Literature, Epigraphy, Archaology and Numismatics. ; The Sources of History - Studies in the Uses of Historical Evidence; 252 pages
