Ugur Derman's name is synonymous with calligraphy and marbling. Having apprenticed himself to Necmeddin Okyay -the sst representative of the Ottoman book arts tradition- in the 1950's and not left his side until his death, having known closely every leading calligrapher, illuminator, and marbler of his day, he is unequalled as either a scholar or a connoisseur. More than anyone in his generation, Ugur Derman is responsible for the survival of the arts of the book in Turkey, and for the recent resurgence in their appreciation. For this reason, the present Festschrift was compiled on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday with contributions received fom all over the world. In honoring his long career and more importantly his preseverance, we hope that this volume will find favor with him, and believe that it will serve as a basic reference in the Islamic arts of the book for many years to come.
