THE ART OF LOVE Bimillennial Essays on Ovid's Ars Amatoria and Remedia Amoris
Very light shelfwear to book and DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; The Art of Love celebrates the bi-millennium of Ovid's cycle of sophisticated and subversive didactic poems on love, traditionally assumed to have been brought to completion around AD 2. Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love) and Remedia Amoris (Cures for Love) , which purport to teach young Roman men and women how to be good lovers, were partly responsible for the poet's exile from Rome under the emperor Augustus. None the less they exerted great influence over ancient and later love poetry. This is the first collection in English devoted to the poems, and brings together many of the leading figures in the field of Latin literature and Ovidian studies from the British Isles, Germany, Italy, and the United States. It offers a range of perspectives on the poetics, politics, and erotics of the poems, beginning with a critical survey of recent research, and concluding with papers on the ancient, medieval, and modern reception of the poems. ; 387 pages

THE EPIC CITY Urbanism, Utopia, and the Garden in Ancient Greece and Rome
Very faint shelfwear else fine. ; As Greek and Trojan forces battled in the shadow of Troy's wall, Hephaistos created a wondrous, ornately decorated shield for Achilles. At the Shield's center lay two walled cities, one at war and one at peace, surrounded by fields and pasturelands. Viewed as Homer's blueprint for an ideal, or utopian, social order, the Shield reveals that restraining and taming Nature would be fundamental to the Hellenic urban quest. It is this ideal that Classical Athens, with her utilitarian view of Nature, exemplified. In a city lacking pleasure gardens, it was particularly worthy of note when Epicurus created his garden oasis within the dense urban fabric. The disastrous results of extreme anthropocentrism would promote an essentially nostalgic desire to break down artificial barriers between humanity and Nature. This new ideal, vividly expressed through the domestication of Nature in villas and gardens and also through primitivist and Epicurean tendencies in Latin literature, informed the urban endeavors of Rome. ; Hellenic Studies 21; 8.9 X 5.4 X 0.5 inches; 220 pages

THE PLATONIC ODYSSEY A Philosophical Literary Inquiry Into the Phaedo
Light bump to base of spine. Light shelfwear to wraps. ; Value Inquiry Book Series, VIBS 17; 187 pages; This book is a detailed study of how Plato constructs his seminal philosophical dialogue, the Phaedo, as a unique tragedy, a poetic masterpiece whose structure is organic and symmetrical. Plato's mental Odyssey leads to the internal drama of the Phaedo plot. The analysis examines how Plato's literary art overcomes the philosophical problem of the separation of Ideas from sensible things. And it traces literary and philosophical offspring of the mental Odyssey, including Joyce and Proust.

After the procession and formal welcome, the Greek Orthodox bishop, Damaskimos of Diavlia, offered the opening invocation. The closing benediction was to be very different in style. It was given by Reverend Dr. Nancy Taylor, senior minister of Old South Church in Boston. Dr. Taylor's presence at the ceremony was a fitting one. It was her church -the United Church of Christ- that first sent missionaries overseas to found the American College.".

PERSONALITY IN GREEK EPIC, TRAGEDY, AND PHILOSOPHY The Self in Dialogue
Very faint foxing to top of textblock. Else very light shelfwear. ; This is a major study of conceptions of selfhood and personality in Homer and Greek Tragedy and Philosophy. The focus is on the norms of personality in Greek psychology and ethics. Gill argues that the key to understanding Greek thought of this type is to counteract the subjective and individualistic aspects of our own thinking about the person. He defines an "objective-participant" conception of personality, symbolized by the idea of the person as an interlocutor in a series of psychological and ethical dialogues. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 528 pages

Giuliani, Luca & (Trans. by Joseph O'Donnell)
IMAGE AND MYTH A History of Pictorial Narration in Greek Art
Book is fine. Front flap is creased. ; On museum visits, we pass by beautiful, well-preserved vases from ancient Greece—but how often do we understand what the images on them depict? In Image and Myth, Luca Giuliani tells the stories behind the pictures, exploring how artists of antiquity had to determine which motifs or historical and mythic events to use to tell an underlying story while also keeping in mind the tastes and expectations of paying clients. Covering the range of Greek style and its growth between the early Archaic and Hellenistic periods, Giuliani describes the intellectual, social, and artistic contexts in which the images were created. He reveals that developments in Greek vase painting were driven as much by the times as they were by tradition—the better-known the story, the less leeway the artists had in interpreting it. As literary culture transformed from an oral tradition, in which stories were always in flux, to the stability of written texts, the images produced by artists eventually became nothing more than illustrations of canonical works. At once a work of cultural and art history, Image and Myth builds a new way of understanding the visual culture of ancient Greece. ; 10.1 X 7.0 X 1.0 inches; 384 pages
