THE IDEA OF EPIC
Faint foxing to textblock else book is fine. DJ spine sunned and discolored. Dustjacket is protected in plastick sleeve. ; Eidos; 0.75 x 8.75 x 6 Inches; 200 pages; The idea of epic is elusive. The classical tradition of epic poetry emerged from the heroic poetry of one tribe of one people, the Ionian Greeks. The fame of the Iliad and Odyssey inspired emulators and created a genre which remained in high favor throughout the classical epoch and was revived in the Renaissance. Modern literature, however, has neglected it and the word "epic" no longer connotes a literary form. J. B. Hainsworth explores the development of the epic genre, the causes of its success in classical literature, and the reasons for the failure of the genre after its triumphs in the Renaissance. The idea of epic, Hainsworth argues, is composite. As the offspring of a tradition of heroic poetry, it is a narrative of historical or fictional events. However, the Homeric epics try to make sense of events by relating them to some theme, for example heroism, and explaining them in terms of a metaphysical idea such as destiny or the will of God. In the literary epic of the classical period the narrative element divided into historical and mythological forms; authors exploited national, political, and romantic themes. Hainsworth examines the way in which these ideas intersect in classical criticism and in Hellenistic and Roman epic. Hainsworth demonstrates that after its first flowering the epic became an artificial literary form justified by the authority of the Homeric poems. When the poetic form was abandoned the idea of epic dissolved, leaving as its ghost the expression in other forms of the metaphysical ideas of the Greek and Roman epics.

Akdeniz'in en büyük antik tersanesi Dana Adasi.
New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In Turkish. 284 p., color ills. Akdeniz'in en büyük antik tersanesi Dana Adasi. "... The work at and around Dana Island (Pityoussa / Pityussa) yielded very important results with regards to archaeology. There is a modern lighthouse to warn seafarers about the shoal just off shore in the west. This shoal is about 50 cm. below the water surface and not visible in stormy weather, thus posing a great threat for seafarers. To the south-east of the shoal is a recently sunken modern ship at a depth of 25-35 m. covering a wide area at the bottom. Based on numerous wreck remains around the shoal, it is thought that this modern shipwreck currently conceals many other archaeological remains. In the vicinity of the lighthouse are numerous amphorae on the bottom and buried underneath the sand. The most significant find from this region is an iron ram used on ancient warships. Detailed underwater exploration around the island attested wrecks along the east, south and west coasts as well as anchors datable to the Bronze and Iron Ages and the Roman and East Roman periods. The most important outcome is the identification of structural remains under water by the coast on the mainland side of the island. Some of the remains belong to walls fallen because of an earthquake on the land. Some others are beaching sites hewn into rocks in the water (or on land but then submerged as the water levels rose)"... BRITISH CLASSICS OUTSIDE ENGLAND The Academy and Beyond
Stamp to foreedges of pages "review copy". 1 corner bumped. Very minor shelfwear to DJ. ; The essays in this informative book explore the impact of British classics--the study of Greco-Roman antiquity, with an emphasis on the classical Latin and Greek languages--beyond the borders of England itself, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: inside the academy as specialized scholarship and teaching, outside the academy as a mode of social and cultural formation. Not only did British classics permeate England; they brought English values to Scotland, Wales, and America as well. Far into the twentieth century, to learn classics "the Oxbridge way" was to cloak oneself in the mantle of a gentleman even when the "gentleman" was a woman. ; 230 pages
