DAS LEXIKON "ÜBER DIE SYNTAX" Untersuchung Und Kritische Ausgabe Des Lexikons Im Codex Paris. Coisl. Gr. 345
Gift inscription from author to ffep. ; Serta Graeca. Beiträge Zur Erforschung Griechischer Texte. Band 25; 244 pages; The lexicon "On syntax" has been preserved in one manuscript of the 10th century - in the precious codex Paris. Coisl. gr. 345. The lexicon was compiled between the end of 6th century and the beginning of 9th century. It is of interest on the one hand because of its 728 quotations, mostly from classical authors. On the other hand, it is an important witness in the Greek lexicographic tradition. The lexicon is an original work; no previous compilations have been incorporated. The present study represents its relations to the rest of the Greek syntactic lexicons, some of which have been transmitted in numerous manuscripts.; Signed by Author

Burnett, Anne Pippin
THE ART OF BACCHYLIDES
Very light edgewear to DJ else fine. ; Martin Classical Lectures 29; 224 pages; Anne Burnett shows us the art of Bacchylides in the context of Greek lyric traditions. She discusses the beginnings of choral poetry and the functions of the choral myth; she describes the purposes of the victory song in particular and the practices of Bacchylides and Pindar as they fulfilled their victory commissions. In analyzing individual poems Burnett's approach is two-fold, for each ode is seen as a choral performance reflecting archaic cult practice, while it is also studied as the expression of a particular poetic vision and sensibility. Thus the formal elements of the Bacchylidean victory songs are recognized as the response of a chorus which must give semi-religious praise to a noble athlete or prize-winning prince in times of increasing democracy. At the same time an artistry and an ethic peculiar to Bacchylides are discovered in the manipulation of fictions and mythic materials.

AESCHYLUS' SUPPLICES Play and Trilogy
Scholar's name to ffep (G. De Montmollin). Institution stamp to ffep (Dept. Of Classics - University of Toronto) - no other markings. Corners bumped. DJ is price-clipped. DJ has light browning to back panel. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 288 pages; This remains the major book on Aeschylus' Supplices, its dating and the trilogy to which it belonged. Its first appearance, in 1969, was a response to the publication of a papyrus fragment from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt, which indicated a late production date (the 460s BC) for Aeschylus' play. This upset the previous consensus that it was the earliest Greek tragedy to survive: there was, Garvie argued, no longer good reason to suppose that the play belonged to an early stage in its author's development. The book also examines the evidence for reconstruction of the other, lost plays of the trilogy. Garvie remains convinced that, even without the additional testimony of the papyrus, all the internal from the text of the play points to the 460s, though some have tried to pull it back to the 470s because it feels like an early play. Some of the salutary lessons to be drawn from the discovery of the papyrus have still to be learnt.

LYSISTRATA A Modern Translation
Staple holes to bottom corner of book for first few pages. Hole to top corner of some pages. ; Mentor Series; 128 pages; Aristophanes' comic masterpiece of war and sex remains one of the greatest plays ever written. Led by the title character, the women of the warring city-states of Greece agree to withhold sexual favors with their husbands until they agree to cease fighting. The war of the sexes that ensues makes Lysistrata a comedy without peer in the history of theater.
