‎HELPING FRIENDS AND HARMING ENEMIES A Study in Sophocles and Greek Ethics‎

‎Creasing to spine. Light edgewear to spine ends and 1 corner. Front upper corner bumped with creasing through pages. ; This book is the first detailed study of the plays of Sophocles through examination of a single ethical principle--the traditional Greek popular moral code of "helping friends and harming enemies." Five of the extant plays are discussed in detail from both a dramatic and an ethical standpoint, and the author concludes that ethical themes are not only integral to each drama, but are subjected to an implicit critique through the tragic consequences to which they give rise. Greek scholars and students of Greek drama and Greek thought will welcome this book, which is presented in such a way as to be accessible to specialists and nonspecialists alike. No knowledge of Greek is required. ; 312 pages‎

‎LYSIMACHUS A Study in Early Hellenistic Kingship‎

‎Very light bumping to corners of book. Else fine. DJ has very light shelfwear. ; 0.94 x 8.66 x 5.59 Inches; 304 pages; Among Alexander's successors, Lysimachus is the forgotten man; when he is recalled it is usually as brutal oppressor of the Greeks, or conversely, as a mediocre little man spurred into action only late in life by a domineering woman. As the first full-length study of Lysimachus in the English language, this book aims to reassess Lysimachus' achievements, which although ephemeral, foreshadowed the growth of the Pergamene and Byzantine empires. Helen Lund sets Lysimachus' actions against the background of the early Hellenistic world, marked by extreme political instability and constant warfare, but also by great developments in city building, portraiture and numismatics. Lysimachus' practice in warfare, kingship, and government is compared and contrasted with that of his contemporaries, his predecessors, and his successors in order to set his achievements in the context of a continuum of imperial rule in Asia Minor. The evidence for Lysimachus's rule is set in its literary, political and social context. Covering Lysimachus's rise from governor of the obscure satrapy of Thrace to ruler of a vast Hellespont-centered kingdom, this book analyzes his skills as warrior and diplomat, and examines the factors which motivated him at each stage of his career. Helen Lund discusses images of Lysimachus in literature, his contribution to early Hellenistic kingship ritual and royal propaganda, offering a completely fresh approach to the dynastic struggle which ended his career.‎

‎THE LEGACY OF GREECE A New Appraisal‎

‎Book has very light shelfwear else fine. Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear and rubbing. DJ is price-clipped. ; 1.06 x 8.75 x 5.69 Inches; 480 pages; This book is about much more than `the glory that was Greece'. In this fresh appraisal, replacing the original Legacy of Greece edited by Sir Richard Livingstone in 1921, fourteen distinguished contributors, all specialists in their field, describe a particular aspect of Greek culture, and then assess what later generations have made of this valuable inheritance. The result is a lucid and succinct introduction to how the ancient Greeks lived and thought, and to their influence on the world we know today. The wide range of topics covered includes politics, literature, history, education, philosophy, science, myth, and art and architecture.‎

‎AUGUSTUS‎

‎Book is fine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Former owner's name on ffep. Slight damage to upper edge of DJ. ; Roman Imperial Biographies; 0.95 x 9.43 x 6.38 Inches; 271 pages; Augustus, the heir to Julius Caesar, was the guiding light in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. In this biography, Pat Southern traces the life and works of the emperor chronologically, presenting idealogy and events as they occurred from Augustus' point of view, including his transition from heir and successor of Julius Caesar to head of the new Principate and his development of the Roman Empire. Augustus did not have a master plan of politics and legislation, but instead, he had to wait and occasionally change course before he settled on a version of government that the Senate and people found acceptable. While there have been many books covering the political, social, and aesthetic culture of the Augustan Age, this is the first book to present the life of Augustus, the man.‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Emmet Robbins). Very light bumping to bottom corners. DJ spine is a little sunned. ‎ELECTRA, ANCIENT AND MODERN: ASPECTS OF THE RECEPTION OF THE TRAGIC HEROINE‎

‎Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 113; 250 pages; Electra is a unique, complex, and fascinating Greek tragic heroine, who became a source of inspiration for countless playwrights, artists, musicians and filmmakers. The daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra she famously supported her brother’s quest to avenge their father’s murder even at the cost of matricide. Her passion for justice and her desire for vengeance have echoed down the centuries to the modern era. Enshrined as the mourner of Greek tragedy par excellence Electra has enjoyed a long and rich reception history. Electra, ancient and modern, examines the treatment of Electra by all three ancient tragedians, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, and their dialogue with the mythical tradition that preceded them. The focus then shifts forward in time to case studies of her reception in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Gradually Electra’s dark desires re-emerge over the course of these three centuries until her passionate cries for vengeance are heard once again. Through its detailed analysis of Electra, this book also provides a helpful introduction to the study of Classical Reception, its ambitions and methods.‎
