Honour,Family and Patronage : A Study of Institutions and Moral Values in a Greek Mountain Community
"Honour, family, and patronage refer to the fundamental values and institutions of a traditional community of Sarakatsani shephers in the Greek mountains. The community comprises six hundred mutually antagonistic and competing families whose members accept few moral obligations beyond the immediate family and a restricted circle of kin. In this fragmented society, unrelated men view one another with intense distrust. Inevitably, economic and civid cooperation are severly limited. A system of social values based on concepts of honour, strength, and pride guides the Sarakatsani away from apparent anarch in their communal life. Relations between the community and the wider Greek society consequently take specific forms of social and political patronage" Classic scholarly study of the lifestyle & motivations of the transhumant Sarakatsani shepherd community in Greece. Meticulous fieldwork (1950s) and fascinating observations : a classic. 393p. illus .map .bibliography. index.Name of owner on ffep., else as new, DJ Sun faded spine, shadow of price sticker, else fine. McDonald, Robert
The Competitiveness of the Greek Economy 2004 - 2008
The Competitiveness of the Greek Economy is the first comprehensive survey of efforts in the Greek public and private sectors to modernise. It draws on interviews with lawmakers, the executive and businesspeople to record their progress across a 20-year period in drafting and implementing laws that harmonise Greece with the rest of the EU and the globalised marketplace. When the survey was first published in 2004, Minister of Development Dimitris Sioufas had it distributed to the members of the newly formed National Council of Competitiveness and Development as required reading. This edition was updated with an Introduction to include developments in the first half of 2005. The aim of the survey is to appear in updated form once a year. The survey is broken into the following chapters: Legislation, Bureaucracy, Taxation, Corruption, Labour, Education, Liberalisation, Telecommunications, Energy and Privatisation. Robert McDonald is a freelance writer and broadcaster based in London who has specialised in Greek matters for 40 years. As well as a contributor to the weekly newspaper Athens News, he is the contributor for the Economist Intelligence Units quarterly Country Report: Greece and the author of Kerkyra Publications quarterly Business File.132p. The Last Heracles
"In the tradition of Mary Renault, history and myth have been interwoven together to present a new and unforgettable account of the story of Heracles, the greatest of the Greek heroes. This is an epic tale of a mighty man and his legendary labours which took him to strange and distant lands to perform feats of strength, endurance and courage which have never been equalled in fact or fiction. "The Last Heracles" is a story of classic wonder and adventure, a saga of prophecies and quests, of blind devotion and loyalty, of treachery and doom, of kingdoms overthrown by war. It is a story told by Iphicles, the brother of Heracles, who loved and followed him until the end.And to a scarcely lesser extent it is Iphicles" story too, for his devotion adds a new dimension of tenderness to this record of heroism. Heracles" Greece is the Greece where gods walked and heroes sang. All deeds, whether wicked or great, were larger than life and Georgia Sallaska"s evident love of her subject and knowledge of it, plus the richness of her imagination, combine to bring to life the splendour, brutality and high drama of this fabled past. er"."
