HOMER AND THE ORAL TRADITION
Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has some edgewear and rubbing with a couple of tears. DJ spine sunned with faint yellowing to back panel. ; 231 pages; The Songs of Homer (Cambridge University Press, 1962) was a major contribution to Homeric studies, establishing important theories about the composition, structure and transmission of the monumental poems. In this 1976 volume, Geoffrey Kirk returns to Homer, but the themes are largely different. He considers in particular the nature of oral and epic poetry, and the meaning of an oral tradition. There are problems here of interest not only to classicists and Homeric specialists but also to students of English and comparative literature, and to anthropologists concerned with the literature of traditional societies. Those pieces that were previously published were revised and unified for the volume. The longest section, on 'the oral and the literary epic', is derived from the J. H. Gray Lectures, which Professor Kirk delivered in Cambridge in 1974 and which had not been previously published in any form.

THE CAVALRY OF CLASSICAL GREECE A Social and Miltary History with Particular Reference to Athens
2 corners and base of spine bumped. Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. ; 1.06 x 8.75 x 5.75 Inches; 380 pages; This book is the first to examine how classical Greek cavalry actually operated on the battlefield. It looks at its prime characteristics, including mobility, protection, armament, training, leadership, flexibility, and motivation. Until now, it was generally assumed that ancient Greek cavalry was subordinated to the infantry because it was less effective in battle. This book challenges this assumption, analyzing the position of Greek cavalry, and especially the Athenian arm, not only in the battlefield but in society as a whole.

THERMOPYLAE The Battle That Changed the World
Upper corners bumped. Minor shelfwear to DJ now in mylar. ; In 480 BC, a huge Persian army, led by the inimitable King Xerxes, entered the mountain pass of Thermopylae as it marched on Greece, intending to conquer the land with little difficulty. But the Greeks? Led by King Leonidas and a small army of Spartans? Took the battle to the Persians at Thermopylae, and halted their advance? Almost. It is one of history’s most acclaimed battles, one of civilization’s greatest last stands. And in Thermopylae, renowned classical historian Paul Cartledge looks anew this history-altering moment and, most impressively, shows how its repercussions have bearing on us even today. The invasion of Europe by Xerxes and his army redefined culture, kingdom, and class. The valiant efforts of a few thousand Greek warriors, facing a huge onrushing Persian army at the narrow pass at Thermopylae, changed the way generations to come would think about combat, courage, and death. ; 313 pages

THE CAMBRIDGE ANCIENT HISTORY Volume of Plates II Prepared by C. T. Seltman
Ex-library copy (non-circulating reference) with usual stamps, call numbers. Else VG. ; Cambridge Ancient History Series; 121 pages; This book of plates can be used either as a companion to Volume IV or as an independent, illustrated account of the period, and of the evidence of Greek civilization and culture as it encountered the Persian empire and struggled for its freedom. Detailed commentary accompanies a full pictoral survey of the art and archaeology of the Persian empire and its provinces, from Thrace to India. The section on Greece concentrates on late Archaic Athens, immediately before the Persian wars, and considers cultural progress as evidence of various aspects of Greek life and society. The fortunes of the Western Greek colonial area and of the Etruscan and Italic peoples are similarly treated. The volume concludes with a study of the invention of coinage and its use throughout Greece and Persia.

ARCHAIC TIMES TO THE END OF THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR
Light shelfwear with minor creasing and scuffing. ; Translated Documents of Greece and Rome 1; 231 pages; The first volume is devoted to the period which begins with the era of Greek colonization and ends with the close of the Peloponnesian War in 404 B. C. Charles Fornara has gathered together material compiled from inscriptions, ancient encyclopedias, scholia, and similar sources. The material, much of it translated by him for the first time, covers not only events of national significance - wars and treaties, the founding of towns and colonies, the dedication of temples - but also presents such records of daily life as ration lists, wine trade regulations, inventories of treasure, drinking songs, and financial records. The documents are accompanied by a brief commentary, which is basically intended to clarify obscurities in the text. An extensive glossary and indexes explain obscure terms of Greek social and governmental structure and permit detailed prosopographical analysis.

JULIUS CAESAR
DJ is in mylar. ; This new study of Julius Caesar's life and achievements follows the author's widely acclaimed books on Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, and completes her trilogy on the Late Republic. As Pat Southern makes clear, although we know what Caesar did, we do not really know who he was. Certain features stand out but do not make up the whole man - his staggering energy, the ruthlessness and determination to achieve what he wanted, the loyalty that he inspired in some people and the extreme hatred in others. He became close to being defeated in battle, but never lost a war. He caused the deaths of many, but did not proscribe thousands like Marius and Sulla before him and Anthony and Octavian after him. His aim was to improve, augment and streamline the administration of Rome and the provinces. To do that he needed supreme power, and in achieving it he formed the bridge between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. ; 0.61 x 9.48 x 6.34 Inches; 160 pages

AUGUSTUS
Corners very lightly bumped. ; Roman Imperial Biographies; 0.95 x 9.43 x 6.38 Inches; 271 pages; Augustus, the heir to Julius Caesar, was the guiding light in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. In this biography, Pat Southern traces the life and works of the emperor chronologically, presenting idealogy and events as they occurred from Augustus' point of view, including his transition from heir and successor of Julius Caesar to head of the new Principate and his development of the Roman Empire. Augustus did not have a master plan of politics and legislation, but instead, he had to wait and occasionally change course before he settled on a version of government that the Senate and people found acceptable. While there have been many books covering the political, social, and aesthetic culture of the Augustan Age, this is the first book to present the life of Augustus, the man.
