‎TIMOLEON AND THE REVIVAL OF GREEK SICILY, 344-317 B.C.‎

‎DJ is price-clipped. Light spotting to DJ. Slight sticker remnants to back panel. Very light foxing to textblock. ; 246 pages; Dispatched to Sicily in 344 BC as an elderly man at the head of a small, motley band of mercenaries, Timoleon had no experience of the island. Yet, in less than eight years Timoleon overthrew tyrants, expelled the Carthaginians, and introduced peace, prosperity and constitutional government to an area which for decades had known only disorder. The peace he had brought was broken after his death, and tyranny returned in 317 BC; but the prosperity which he had set in motion continued to increase well into the third century. Dr Talbert has deliberately avoided the temptation to write a biography, and has confined himself to coverage of those aspects of Timeleon's work for which some evidence survives. He examines closely the uneven and frequently eulogistic accounts left by ancient writers. He also discusses fully the light thrown on Timoleon's revival by the discovery of numerous silver coin hoards in Sicily, and by archaeological excavations undertaken there since the Second World War. His studies add up to a most thorough investigation of Timoleon's work.‎

‎THE MACEDONIAN STATE The Origins, Institutions, and History‎

‎Bottom corner is slight bumped. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 0.97 x 9.23 x 6.24 Inches; 440 pages; In 338 BC Philip II of Macedon established Macedonian rule over Greece; he was succeeded in 336 by his son Alexander the Great, whose conquests in the twelve years that followed reached as far as the Russian steppes, Afghanistan, and the Punjab, and created the Hellenistic world. The study of Macedonia is now a growing point in ancient history. The first ever history of ancient Macedonia has now been completed in three volumes by N. G. L. Hammond, helped by G. T. Griffith and F. W. Walbank. On the basis of that work Professor Hammond now provides in one volume a history of the Macedonian state and its institutions both in Europe and in the Hellenistic kingdoms in Asia and Egypt, on which much new light has been shed by epigraphic and archaeological discoveries. Those institutions have had a profound influence on subsequent history. Full references are given to the ancient sources of information and to archaeological, numismatic, and epigraphic articles.‎

‎ROMAN THEATER AND SOCIETY E. Togo Salmon Papers I‎

‎DJ spine is lightly sunned. ; Roman Theater & Society; 9.75 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 200 pages; William Slater's new volume Roman Theater and Society brings an important perspective to the much-maligned status of the Roman theater, which has only recently been reappraised and appreciated as uniquely Roman rather than criticized for not being Greek. From this point of embarkation, William Slater and the nine contributors discuss theater in Rome and the Greek east with a definition of performance incorporating not only stage performances but also dinnertime entertainment, sporting events, and political events. Contributors are T. D. Barnes, K. M. Coleman, J. C. Edmonson, E. R. Gebhard, J. R. Green, E. J. Jory, W. D. Lebek, and D. S. Potter. Individual chapters combine literary evidence with archaeological, thereby engendering a deeper appreciation for the social and political roles of Roman theater. It becomes clear that these roles were of great influence in giving voice to the popular demands of the average Roman. In examining the roles of theater the contributors turn to the players and audience themselves for deeper understanding.‎

‎THE CRIMINAL COURTS OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC AND PRINCIPATE With a Preface by John Crook‎

‎Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. ; 143 pages; Provides a massive reinforcement for Livy's, Cicero's and Mommsen's view of the early Roman criminal courts-- namely that they were indeed the assembly of the people acting as a court of appeal against a magisterial sentence. Also describes minutely the working of the quaestiones, the standing jury courts of the age of Cicero and considers how satisfactory was the justice they provided. Lastly he describes the developments in criminal justice under the emperors of the Principate.‎
