‎CLASSICAL BEARINGS Interpreting Ancient History and Culture‎

‎Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Scholar's name to ffep in pen (G. P. Goold). Very Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; In this collection of sixteen literary and historical essays, Peter Green informs, entertains, and stimulates. He covers a wide range of subjects, from Greek attitudes toward death to the mysteries of the Delphic Oracle, from Tutankhamun and the gold of Egypt to sex in ancient literature, from the island of Lesbos (where he once lived) to the challenges of translating Ovid's wit and elegant eroticism into present-day English verse, from Victorian pederastic aesthetics to Marxism's losing battle with ancient history. This third volume of Green's essays (several previously unpublished) reveals throughout his serious concern that we are, in a very real sense, losing the legacy of antiquity through the corrosive methodologies of modern academic criticism. ; 328 pages‎

Some tears and chipping to DJ. DJ is price-clipped. ; Original 1927 Edition ; 346 pages; One of the major scholars of the 1920s and 30s concerned with the origins of Greek drama, Sir Arthur Pickard-Cambridge focused in particular on the evidence derived from archaeological finds and papyri. He describes this history of the earliest stages of Greek drama as "a dispassionate attempt to ascertain historical truth or probability by methods as logical as the subject permits. "The study begins by bringing together what was known of the dithyramb, and argues against Aristotle's statement that tragedy originated from the leaders of the dithyramb, and against the theory put forward by Sir William Ridgeway that it originated in performances at the tombs of dead heroes.‎

‎SELECTED PAPERS Studies in Greek and Roman History and Historiography‎

‎Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. Else minor shelfwear. ; This volume contains a selection of the more important and influential of Professor F. W. Walbank's occasional papers. Published over a period of fifty years, they cover a wide range of classical subjects. Three deal with the role of nationality in the Greco-Roman world and with the constitutional character of Greek federal states. Others are concerned with problems of third- and second-century Roman history. Eight papers treat the antecedents of so-called 'tragic history', speeches in ancient historians, and several aspects of Polybius' work. Finally, the selection includes Professor Walbank's detailed discussion of the chronology of Ptolemy IV's death and the accession of Ptolemy Epiphanes. A full bibliography of the author's publications concludes the volume. ; 400 pages‎
