HOMER AND THE ORIGIN OF THE GREEK ALPHABET
Some heavy Foxing/dustsoiling to textblock. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Who invented the Greek alphabet and why? The purpose of this challenging book is to inquire systematically into the historical causes that underlay the radical shift from earlier and less efficient writing systems to the use of alphabetic writing. The author reaches the conclusion that a single man, perhaps from the island of Euboea, invented the Greek alphabet specifically in order to record the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer. ; 9.5 x 1 x 6.5 Inches; 306 pages

Lord, Albert Bates
EPIC SINGERS AND ORAL TRADITION
Light Foxing/dustsoiling to textblock. Light foxing to endpapers. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). ; Albert Bates Lord here offers an unparalleled overview of the nature of oral-traditional epic songs and the practices of the singers who composed them. Shaped by the conviction that theory should be based on what singers actually do, and have done in times past, the essays collected here span half a century of Lord's research on the oral tradition from Homer to the twentieth century. Drawing on his extensive fieldwork in living oral traditions and on the theoretical writings of Milman Parry, Lord concentrates on the singers and their art as manifested in texts of performance. In thirteen essays, some previously unpublished and all of them revised for book publication, he explores questions of composition, transmittal, and interpretation and raises important comparative issues. Individual chapters discuss aspects of the Homeric poems, South Slavic oral-traditional epics, the songs of Avdo Metedovic, Beowulf and Anglo-Saxon poetry, the medieval Greek Digenis Akritas and other medieval epics, central Asiatic and Balkan epics, the Finnish Kalevala, and the Bulgarian oral epic. ; Myth And Poetics; 9.1 X 6.3 X 0.9 inches; 280 pages

THE FRAGMENTARY LATIN POETS Edited with Commentary
Scholar's name to half-title (Robert Brown). Light shelfwear. Crease to spine. Very faint crease to upper edge of first few pages. ; To understand fully the development of Latin poetry, one has to consider not only the prominent figures whose works survive entire but also the writers known to us only in fragments from quotations. The fragments of the non-dramatic poets have been collected by Baehrens, Morel, and Buchner, but only a few have ever received a commentary. This book revises the texts, taking advantage of much earlier work now largely forgotten, and provides the necessary interpretative and illustrative material. Some writers not usually included in this corpus are here covered, such as the minor works of Ennius. ; 560 pages

Stanley, Keith
THE SHIELD OF HOMER Narrative Structure in the Iliad
foxing to textblock. Light shelfwear to DJ with 1 tiny chip. ; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 492 pages; In this masterly interpretation of narrative sequence in the Iliad, Keith Stanley not only sharpens the current debate over the date and creation of the poem, but also challenges the view of this work as primarily a celebration of heroic force. He begins by studying the intricate ring-composition in the verses describing Achilles' shield, then extends this analysis to reveal the Iliad as an elaborate and self-conscious formal whole. In so doing he defends the hypothesis that the poem as we know it is a massive reorganization and expansion of earlier "Homeric" material, written in response to the need for a stable text for repeated performance at the sixth-century Athenian festival for the city's patron goddess. Stanley explores the arrangement of the poem's books, all unified by theme and structure, showing how this allowed for artistically satisfying and practically feasible recitation over a period of three or four days. Taking structural emphasis as a guide to poetic discourse, the author argues that the Iliad is not a poem of "might"--as opposed to the Odyssean celebration of "guile"--but that in advocating social and personal reconciliation the poem offers a profound indictment of a warring heroic society.

THE ILIAD: A COMMENTARY Volume IV: Books 13-16
Foxing to textblock and endpapers. Gift inscription from the author to G. P. Goold on half-title. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). ; This, the fourth volume in the six-volume Commentary on The Iliad being prepared under the General Editorship of Professor G. S. Kirk, covers Books 13-16, including the Battle for the Ships, the Deception of Zeus and the Death of Patroklos. Three introductory essays discuss the role of Homer’s gods in his poetry; the origins and development of the epic diction; and the transmission of the text, from the bard’s lips to our own manuscripts. It is now widely recognised that the first masterpiece of Western literature is an oral poem; Professor Janko’s detailed commentary aims to show how this recognition can clarify many linguistic and textual problems, entailing a radical reassessment of the work of Homer’s Alexandrian editors. The commentary also explores the poet’s subtle creativity in adapting traditional materials, whether formulae, typical scenes, mythology or imagery, so as best to move, inspire and entertain his audience, ancient and modern alike. Discussion of the poem’s literary qualities and structure is, where possible, kept separate from that of more technical matters. ; The Iliad: a Commentary; Vol. 4; 0.93 x 9.02 x 6 Inches; 485 pages; Signed by Author

THE ILIAD: A COMMENTARY Volume III: Books 9-12
Foxing to textblock and endpapers. ; This is the third volume in the major six-volume Commentary on Homer’s Iliad prepared under the General Editorship of Professor G. S. Kirk. It opens with two introductory chapters: the first on Homeric diction (on which emphasis is maintained throughout the Commentary) ; the second on the contributions that comparative studies have made to seeing the Homeric epics in sharper perspective. In the commentary Dr Hainsworth confronts in an intentionally even-handed manner the serious problems posed by the ninth, tenth and twelfth books of The Iliad, seeking by means of a succinct discussion and a brief bibliography of recent contributions to furnish the user with a point of entry into the often voluminous scholarship devoted to these questions. The Greek text is not included. ; The Iliad: a Commentary; Vol. 3; 0.89 x 8.98 x 6 Inches; 402 pages

Emails of Kirk's obituaries printed out and tipped in. Includes stapled review of Book by Willcock and signed by him. Also includes photocopied review of book by Dawe tipped in. ; This is the first volume of a six-volume Commentary on Homer's Iliad, under the General Editorship of professor G. S. Kirk. Professor Kirk himself is the editor of the present volume, which covers the first four Books of Iliad. It consists of four introductory chapters, dealing in particular with rhythm and formular techniques, followed by the detailed commentary which aims at helping serious readers by attempting to identify and deal with most of the difficulties which might stand in the way of a sensitive and informed response to the poem. The Catalogues in Book 2 recieve especially full treatment. The book does not include a Greek text - important matters pertaining to the text are discussed in the commentary. It is hoped that the volume as a whole will lead scholars to a better understanding of the epic style as well as of many well-known thematic problems on a larger scale. This Commentary will be an essential reference work for all students of Greek literature. Archaeologists and historians will also find that it contains matters of relevance to them. ; The Iliad: a Commentary; Vol. 1; 0.9 x 8.99 x 6.01 Inches; 448 pages
