‎Blood and Tears: Greece 1940-1949: a Story of War and Love‎

‎A powerful autobiography set in the turbulent decade of 1940s Greece. Through the eyes of an impressionable and intelligent young man who came of age in a time of world war, foreign occupation, resistance, and civil war, we witness the tragedy and trauma suffered by Greece. While uniquely personal, this is also the story of young Greeks cast unwillingly into the ambivalences and horrors of WWII.The authors descriptions are vivid and convincing. Against a rigorously researched backdrop of the key historical events, we see youthful idealism being forcibly reconciled to the realities of hunger, brutality, dissension, and death. With a keen eye for detail, and reflecting on the mundane as well as the profound, we watch as Greece patriotically fends off foreign invasion and survives years of harsh occupation, but gullibly and disastrously succumbs to the blandishments of utopians. ‎Mount Athos : Renewal in Paradise‎

‎.In this second edition of his acclaimed study of Mount Athos (for which he was awarded the 2002 Criticos Prize) the author takes the opportunity to revise and update his text and also to add a completely new chapter documenting the changes that have occurred in the twelve years since its first publication. The renewal that took place in the last quarter of the twentieth century can now be seen in its historical context and has been succeeded by a period of spiritual and cultural maturity. Not for the first time, in a world beset by political upheaval and economic turmoil, the Mountain stands as a symbol of continuity and stability, a spiritual powerhouse offering refreshment to all who turn to it.This is a history of Mount Athos from pagan antiquity to the present day.Second revised edition originally published:2002 Yale University Press.288 p. illus [some col.] Book‎

‎Lorenzatos, Zissimos‎

‎Aegean Notebooks : Reflections By Sea and Land‎

‎Zissimos Lorenzatos (1915-2004), essayist, thinker and poet, was arguably Greece's most significant man of letters in the twentieth century. In the Aegean Notebooks, a record of his observations and reflections while sailing among the Greek islands in the 1970s and 1980s, the special quality of his literary and philosophical gifts, and of the man himself, are vividly present. Along with everything a mariner yearns to bring ashore, all he has felt and experienced at sea with the wake of the boat unfurling behind him, Lorenzatos brings us in addition a lifetime's learning and contemplation. For him, life, and the living of it, was of the essence. As he observes in his foreword to these notebooks: '. . . life itself writes nothing, it erases everything that is written about it, and simply, irreplaceably lives, like the inaccessible "well of water springing up".''Zissimos Lorenzatos was the wisest Greek critic of his generation, and he left us a legacy of elegant thinking that extended beyond literature to the broader issues at the center of the human heart.' ‎Cosmos, Life, and Liturgy, in a Greek Orthodox Village‎

‎Introduction " The subject of this book is the imaginative world of an Orthodox Christian village in Greece, and specifically the cosmological, religious and moral imagination associated with the characteristic forms of its life. . . . To become aware of the religious imagination in subsistence villages of this kind in Europe involves engaging with a living reality which is often only seen at a distance, through the prism of debates which remain very much alive in the religious history of the West. With a Greek village this is particularly the case: Greece has remained to many the mother of the western world, whether as the first source of free, rational thought or as the source of the Greek language in which the New Testament was first written. And for this reason western preoccupations with Greece have shaped perceptions of the Greek imagination in distinct ways. .. . .Another great part of Romiosýne is the Byzantine legacy of the Orthodox Christian faith, whose symbols and thought forms are embedded throughout the culture, and Greeks may resist the ethos of the modern European state not only from individualism or scepticism, but also from an Orthodox vision of society. ... I have ...tried to clarify how they relate to the Orthodox understanding of things, so as to provide as complete a picture as is possible in the space available of the Greek religious imagination as I found it within the varied aspects of one community. ‎Rhigas Velestinlis : The Proto-Martyr of the Greek Revolution‎

‎(New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece) Rhigas of Velestino (1757-1798), popularly known as Rhigas Pheraios, is one of the greatest national heroes of modern Greece for it was he who some thirty years before the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 first conceived the possibility of a full-scale national revolution to free Greece from the domination of its Ottoman overlords. His aim was not simply an armed rebellion but a regeneration of his people, through education, literature and social and political awareness. To this end he wrote patriotic stories, poems, scientific lectures, he published maps and translations, and drafted a constitution, and he was the first Greek to insist that the popular language, or demotic Greek, should become the country's official language. But he was not to witness the realisation of his vision. On his way up to stir up the Greeks of the Mani he was betrayed, arrested in Trieste by the Austrian police, extradited to the Turkish authorities and executed, with seven colleagues, at Belgrade. This book is the first comprehensive study of Rhigas's life and ideas in English, and includes 14 black and white illustrations. Book‎

‎The Murderess : A Social Tale [He Phonissa]‎

‎Edited by Denise Harvey & Lambros Kamperidis. From its first appearance in 1903 The Murderess has been regarded as Alexandros Papadiamandiss finest work. Set on his native island of Skiathos it tells the story of Hadoula, a widow with grown-up children, who has convinced herself that it is better little girls should leave this life when young so that they and their parents should not suffer the trials that inevitably would be inflicted on them by an inequitable society. In the throes of this misguided compassion she first murders her own granddaughter and afterwards finds herself set on a course she is unable to stop despite the promptings of her conscience and her awareness of the consequences. Papadiamandis charts this course and the events in her life that preceded it, and against a background of the islands verdant and untrodden places and the living presence of the Church he explores the particular quality evil has of disguising itself as good, but without ever passing judgement on the murderess herself. Long considered one of Greece's most important writers, Papadiamandis's reflections on and observations of modern Greek life define the Greek experience in a way unmatched by any of his contemporaries. This new translation of The Murderess has been undertaken and published to mark the centenary of Papadiamandis's death. 142P.cm, Denise Harvey (Publisher), Book‎

‎Porphyrios (Elder) [Evangelos Bairaktaris]‎

‎Wounded by Love, The Life and Wisdom of Elder Porphyrios‎

‎(New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece) Elder Porphyrios, a Greek monk and priest who died in 1991, stands in the long tradition of charismatic spiritual guides in the Eastern Church which continues from the apostolic age down to figures such as Saint Seraphim of Sarov and Staretz Silouan in modern times. In this book he tells the story of his life and, in simple, deeply relfected and profoundly wise words, he expounds the Christian faith for today. This book was compiled after his death from an archive of notes and recordings of his reminiscences, conversations and words of guidance, and was first published in Greek in 2003. The vibrant personality of Elder Porphyrios at all times shines through his words with great transparency and charm. In his introduction to the Greek edition Bishop Irenaeus of Chania writes: 'The words of blessed Elder Porphyrios are the words of a holy Father, of a man with the gift of clear sight, who was ever retiring, humble, simple and ardent and whose life was a true and authentic witness to Christ, to His truth and to His joy. Through his presence, love, prayer, counsel and guidance he supported an untold number of people in the diffcult hours of illness, mourning, pain, loss of faith and death. He is a god-bearing Father of our days, a true priest and teacher who in his ascetic way fell in love with Christ and faithfully served his fellow man. His teaching is deeply impregnated with the ethos and theology of the Orthodox Church and is dominated by the person and image of Christ our Saviour.' Book‎

‎Fair Greece,Sad Relic : Literary Philhellenism from Shakespeare to Byron‎

‎(New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece) "Scholarly and brilliantly written account" of the influence of Greece on the development of English literature. This absorbing book presents the picture of Greece from the fall of Constantinople to the arrival of Byron as seen through the eyes of English poets, essayists and travellers, and shows that "philhellenism" has a much longer history than most people realize. The author reveals how our conception of Greece has been moulded by generations of writers when the country was under Turkish occupation and when its people, temples and traditions were regarded as witnesses both to its ancient splendour and its contemporary sadness.312p.Illus. Stylistically Papatsonis's mature poetry is characterized by its failure to use a strict verse form, its discontinuous and dreamlike combination of images, and its highly personal quality. It is a poetry which intends to elicit meaning rather than to lend itself to pyrotechnical effects. It utilizes patterns of rhythms and sounds to make meaning more emphatic. Book‎
