Love Poems from the Greek Anthology
"The Greek Anthology consists of over four thousand brief epigrams written from before the Persian Wars down to the end of the Middle Ages; in other words from the Homeric to the close of the Byzantine age. These poems thus voice the thoughts and sentiments of four distinct and vastly different civilizations; Greece in the golden age of its classicism; Greece in its Alexandrian age; Greece transplanted to Rome, pagan, or Christian; and finally Greece persisting through the dark ages to the dawn of the Renaissance" Nice copy in large type of examples of Greek Lyric poetry.115p. list of sources. Some damage to spine, but contents fine, in original slipcase. Gruen, Erich S.
Diaspora: Jews amidst Greeks and Romans
What was life like for Jews settled throughout the Mediterranean world of Classical antiquity--and what place did Jewish communities have in the diverse civilization dominated by Greeks and Romans? In a probing account of the Jewish diaspora in the four centuries from Alexander the Great's conquest of the Near East to the Roman destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70 C.E., Erich Gruen reaches often surprising conclusions. By the first century of our era, Jews living abroad far outnumbered those living in Palestine and had done so for generations. Substantial Jewish communities were found throughout the Greek mainland and Aegean islands, Asia Minor, the Tigris-Euphrates valley, Egypt, and Italy. Focusing especially on Alexandria, Greek cities in Asia Minor, and Rome, Gruen explores the lives of these Jews: the obstacles they encountered, the institutions they established, and their strategies for adjustment. He also delves into Jewish writing in this period, teasing out how Jews in the diaspora saw themselves. There emerges a picture of a Jewish minority that was at home in Greco-Roman cities: subject to only sporadic harassment; its intellectuals immersed in Greco-Roman culture while refashioning it for their own purposes; exhibiting little sign of insecurity in an alien society; and demonstrating both a respect for the Holy Land and a commitment to the local community and Gentile government. Gruen's innovative analysis of the historical and literary record alters our understanding of the way this vibrant minority culture engaged with the dominant Classical civilization. 386p. bibliography. index Book

The Elgin Marbles
The Parthenon sculptures collected by Lord Elgin nearly 200 years ago rank amongst the highest achievements of mankind. Since they went on display in the British Museum in 1817, artists, scholars, poets and millions of visitors have stood before them in wonder. This book tells their story, beginning in the fifth century BC when the Parthenon was built in Athens. The author explains what the sculptures represent, who made them and how they fitted into the grand design of the temple. He describes their gradual destruction by religious zealots, beseiging Venetians and other vandals before Lord Elgin brought them to the safety of London. 72p. illus.index. Book

Euripides
Medea
Mathuen Student Editions series. Translation by J.Michael Walton. Introduction and notes by Marianne Macdonald " A student edition of this challenging and popular tragedy with notes and commentary. The most controversial of the Greek tragedians, Euripedes is also the most modern in his sympathies, a dramatist who handles the complex emotions of his characters with extraordinary depth and insight. Wronged and discarded by her husband, Medea gradually reveals her revenge in its increasing horror, while the audience is led to understand the incomprehensible; a woman who murders her own children. Since its first production (431 BC), the play has exerted an irresistible attraction for actors and directors alike. This Student Edition contains a full introduction, commentary and questions for study" Book

Pollitt,Jerome Jordan
Art and Experience in Classical Greece
"An account of the development of Greek art in the Classical period (about 480-320 BC) which places particular emphasis on the meaning and content of Greek sculpture, architecture and painting. Professor Pollitt reminds us that the visual arts in Greece, as elsewhere, were primarily vehicles of expression. He does not ignore formal development but always relates this to social and cultural history, which it reflected and from which it grew. While his subject is art, he refers frequently to the literature and philosophy of the period which were shaped by the same influences." 205p. illus. bibliography. index. Book

Wood, Michael
The Road to Delphi: Scenes from the History of Oracles
For thousands of years, and in many different cultures, cities, and states, individuals have consulted oracles in time of need. In this fascinating exploration of the history and enduring popularity of oracles, Michael Wood examines how they are interpreted and why.The inherent ambiguity of many oracular pronouncements and the ingenuity and tendentiousness of many readings of them form the basis for Woods analyses of oracles, both real and imagined. Using examples from actual oracles at Delphi, Dodona, and in pre-Hispanic America to fictional-but influential-oracles in literature from Oedipus to Macbeth, Wood combines storytelling and commentary to provide an entertaining and concise account of humanitys persistent faith in signs. He also looks at later instances of oracles, arguing that consultations have evolved in many ways over the years, and that echoes and survivals of old practices in modern literature and popular culture.continue to exert an important influence over human civilization. Lively, engaging, and remarkably revealing, The Road to Delphi shows an ancient art at work in many times and places, and invites us to think again about the ways in which we deal with our longing for the certainties we know we cant have.271p. bibliography. index Book
