‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1995 Paperback, XVI+952 p., 175 x 256 mm. ISBN 9782503504469.‎

Language : Greek.‎

‎Homiliae Pseudo-chrysostomicae Instrumentum studiorum I.,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1994 Paperback, 309 p., 153 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503503400.‎

‎Defining Beauty : The Body in Ancient Greek Art‎

‎, [UK] British Museum , 2015 Hardcover, 256 pages, ENG. edition, 290 x 250 x 25 mm, illustrated dustjacket, with illustrations / images in colour / b/w. ISBN 9780714122878.‎

‎Greek sculpture is full of breathing vitality and yet, at the same time, it reaches beyond mere imitation of nature to give form to thought in works of timeless beauty. For over 2000 years the Greeks experimented with representing the human body in works that range from prehistoric abstract simplicity to the full-blown realism of the age of Alexander the Great. The ancient Greeks invented the modern idea of the human body in art as an object of sensory delight and as a bearer of meaning. Their vision has had a profound influence on the way the western world sees itself. Drawing on the British Museums outstanding collection of Greek sculpture including extraordinary pieces from the Parthenon and the celebrated representation of a discus thrower and through a number of themed sections, this richly illustrated book explores the Greek portrayal of human character in sculpture, along with sexual and social identity. In athletics, the male body was displayed as if it was a living sculpture, and victors were commemorated by actual statues. In art, not only were mortal men and women represented in human form but also the gods and other beings of myth and the supernatural world. In a series of lively introductory chapters, written by a selection of academics, historians and artists, it is revealed how the Greeks themselves viewed the sculpture (which was vividly enhanced with colour), and how it was regarded and treated in later pagan antiquity. The revival of the Greek body in the modern era is also discussed, including the shock of the new effect of the arrival of the Parthenon sculptures in London at the beginning of the nineteenth century.‎

‎hymne antique et son public‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2007 Paperback,XXIV+727 p., 13 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: French. ISBN 9782503524641.‎

‎The scholarly contributions which form volume 7 analyse principally the sociological aspects of the hymn in antiquity, inasmuch as this ultimate form of praise, which partakes more of a social rite than a literary genre, represents, form its origins to the Christian era, a collective celebration of people and objects by communities or groups which are both religious and civic. While there exist many studies of the place of the hymn in ancient literature, no synthetic work had yet chosen to unite ? from a comparative and critical stance ? all of antiquity in its component parts of Egypt, the Orient, Greece, Rome and Byzantium. What is more, the colloquium dealt also with the survival of ancient hymnic forms into the Renaissance and the 17th century. It was indeed proper to highlight the continuity, over and against the divide between Christianity and paganism, of a poetical-encomiastic tradition glorifying superior beings. The result of a colloquium organized by the Universities of Strasbourg and Naples, The Ancient Hymn and its Audience is an ordered approach originating from a varied investigation of the permanence of a phenomenon into modern times.

‎Summary From the time of the Roman Republic, continental Europeans traveling to England brought knowledge of Greek and Roman intellectual culture in the form of books of every genre. But, until 1111 CE, the island contained not a single Platonic dialogue. And for the next two centuries, it had only a partial Latin translation of the Timaeus. A Latin Phaedo eventually appeared, in 1340, and the Meno in 1423. But this hardly limited the number of ideas people had about Plato. He was a proto-Christian, a sage, a scholar of the cosmos, and a healer. And he had an elaborate oeuvre that did exist in England, works of astrology, numerology, medicine, and science, including Cado, Calf, Circle, Herbal, Question, Alchemy, and Book of Prophecies of a Greek King. This book tells the story of Plato in Medieval England, from a name with too few works to a sage with too many. Based on a complete survey of all extant manuscripts, publications, and library records until the fifteenth century, it traces with extraordinary precision the movement of opinions and information about Plato from Europe to England and then into its various monasteries, schools, and universities. This erudite and illuminating sociology of knowledge provides novel insight into the dubious English career of our best-known philosopher. This is intellectual history and reception studies at its most surprising. TABLE OF CONTENTS Editor?s Introduction Author?s Introduction Chapter 1. The Romans (55 BCE to 449 CE) Chapter 2. ‎Summary The present work comprises nearly all of the historical-biographical prose of the Byzantine polygraph Theodore Prodromus, poet and prose writer of the twelfth century, who was active during the reign of the Comnenian emperors John II and Manuel I. With respect to the diversity of his works as a whole, this work aims at a better understanding of the prose writer Prodromus, whose correspondence has never been published in its entirety. The present edition of his collected letters goes with ten more lengthy rhetorical set-pieces (four of them monodies or funerary speeches), originating in the same learned milieu and stylistically close to the letters. The critical text is preceded by a long introduction which gives detailed context for each of the correspondents and examines the literary conventions belonging to the genres of epistolography and monody. It also highlights the originality of a self-conscious author who, if deeply indebted to a longstanding tradition, succeeds in preserving his individuality.

‎, Brepols - Institut d' tudes Augustiniennes, 2024 Paperback, 550 pages, Size:160 x 245 mm, Language(s):French, Latin. ISBN 9782851213310.‎

‎Summary The book analyzes the origin and development of the notion of the will in Saint Augustine's oeuvre. Organized chronologically, this study starts with an overview of the notion of the will in philosophical and Christian traditions anterior to Augustine as well as in Manichaeism (part 1). Part 2 shows that Augustine turns to the notion of the will in his early works in order to explain the origin of evil. At this stage, inspired by Stoicism and the works of Cicero, Augustine equates human will to power, potestas, and believes that good will is always capable to accomplish a good action on its own. Later, in the midst of anti-Manichaean polemics, Augustine recognizes the power that good and bad habits possess over the human soul, but continues to assert will's dominance over passions and habits (part 3). Subsequently, an extensive reading of the Scripture, especially of Paul's Epistles, leads Augustine to assert that will's capacity to act well or badly depends on the source where will takes its delight, rather than on its obedience to the mind (part 4). At the time when he writes his Confessions, Augustine is convinced that after original sin, human will lost its capacity to delight in the spiritual reality. By consequence, human will is unable to act well on its own. Only divine grace can restore will's capacity to delight in God freely and to act well. ‎Summary The Johannine Tradition in Late Antique and Medieval Poetry proposes to examine the impact of the Gospel of John, which is fundamental from the point of view of the history of Christian doctrines, on ancient poetic production, with some forays into the Middle Ages. The critical literature on these aspects is particularly abundant, but hitherto an overall view of the presence and importance of the Johannine tradition in the evolution of Christian poetry was lacking. Based on the Strasbourg colloquium that took place on 16-17 September 2021, the present volume aims to fill this gap, with contributions highlighting not an episodic presence of Johannine texts in poetic compositions, but a structuring function in the definition of the poetic choices of the various authors. The focus of attention could therefore only be on the genre of biblical rewritings, which derive their particular significance from their organic attempt to ?remake? the biblical text in accordance with very precise cultural objectives and the expectations of a select audience. ‎Summary The formal study of the collection of Jewish and Christian texts transmitted under the name of Sibylline Oracles highlights the continuity of the model of biblical prophecy while underlining the heritage of Greek didactic poetry. The interest of this approach is to situate the Sibylline Oracles as a literary work in the context of contemporary Greek versified literary production, which implies, on the part of their successive editors, a familiarity with Greek poetic forms related to a common scholar background. The study of the retelling of biblical episodes aims at identifying the passages where the fictitious Sibyl claims to announce the events of the biblical past and confronting these narrative sequences with contemporary rhetorical theories of paraphrase in order to highlight the formal technique that runs through them and the interpretation of the biblical hypotext that it presumes. Most of the rewritings preserved in the corpus are compatible with the prevailing doctrine of the third century CE. ‎Procopius the Christian Sophist. Catenist, Compiler, Epitomist‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 349 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, French, Italian. ISBN 9782503609898.‎

‎Summary The rich literary production of Gaza in the fifth and sixth centuries AD has received quite some attention in recent scholarship. Yet, the figure and work of Procopius the Sophist, as author of catenae, compiler, and epitomist of patristic exegesis, have remained relatively unknown and under-explored. This collection of essays delves deeply into Procopius' exegetical work. At the outset, a strong case is made that one should distinguish between the famous orator of Gaza and "the Christian sophist" Procopius. A first large section of the book deals with the Genesis Epitome that is studied from three different angles: the limited and as a rule critical use of Origen and his tradition; the importance given to Theodore of Mopsuestia's exegesis of Gen 1-3; and the relations between Procopius' Epitome and John Philoponus' De opificio mundi. The section on the Exodus Epitome studies the specificity of Procopius' work in comparison to the Catena on Exodus, the way the material is organised, and the literary genre of the work. The volume further contains contributions on the connections between the Scholia on Kings attributed to Procopius, the type B catena, and the so-called "Catena Lipsiensis"; the relations between Procopius' Catena on Proverbs and other catenae on this book; the sources of the Isaiah Epitome that show a diligent and able compiler at work; and the comparison between the characteristic features of Procopius' Epitomes and those of the Catena III on Obadiah. As a whole, it offers a wide perspective and significantly advances research on, and our knowledge of, Procopius the Christian sophist, a still somewhat mysterious early Byzantine author and scholar. ‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 400 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Greek. ISBN 9782503579467.‎

‎Summary In the Ambigua to John, the great early Byzantine monastic theologian and philosopher Maximus the Confessor (580 - 662) is at work in his most creative and expansive mode. Using difficult passages in Gregory Nazianzen as starting points for his thinking, Maximus draws together various strands of the theological and philosophical traditions he inherited and shapes an ever-moving, kaleidoscopic vision of the journey through the world of place, time, and materiality to final dynamic repose in eternity. Throughout the text, Maximus takes his readers along the many paths his own mind traveled to clarify this breathtaking reflection of the teachings of Scripture and the patristic tradition. In this translation of the first fully critical edition of Maximus's text, the streams of the Confessor's divine philosophy are revealed in their own right. This translation will be followed with the first full commentary on the Ambigua to John in English, to appear in Corpus Christianorum in Translation. The source text of this volume will appear in Corpus Christianorum, Series Graeca, 84. ‎Organising a Literary Corpus in the Middle Ages. The Corpus Nazianzenum and the Corpus Dionysiacum‎

‎Summary Through the word corpus, the metaphor of the body is applied to a collection of works by the same author that are transmitted together. These works not only share the same skin, the manuscript, but also function organically thanks to a complex system of paracontents. It is possible to see this system at work in the case of only a very few medieval authors throughout history, cultures and languages; the Corpus Nazianzenum and the Corpus Dionysiacum are such instances. Both Gregory of Nazianzus and Dionysius the Areopagite are super-authors, who forged their own literary identity as much as they shaped the body of their writings. This sets both corpora apart from other collections of patristic works. They are also exceptional because of the large scale and enduring character of their cultural impact in the different cultures in which the corpora were translated, commented and annotated. By confronting these two exceptional cases, it is possible to gain some new light on the intellectual and book-historical aspects of literary creation and reception in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 236 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: Italian. ISBN 9782503607535.‎

‎Summary Ges era Cinico? I suoi discepoli? E Paolo? ‎Incubation in Early Byzantium. The Formation of Christian Incubation Cults and Miracle Collections‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 328 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503606606.‎

‎Summary Incubation (temple sleep) was a well-known ritual in the Near East and became increasingly popular in Classical and Hellenistic Greece, becoming attached to Asclepius and other divinities. It flourished in the Eastern Mediterranean, where it was encountered by the emergent Christianity. Temple sleep was so widespread that it was impossible to ban. The Christianization of the incubation ritual was thus a detailed and lengthy (but successful) process that encompassed several aspects of the Church's self-definition, including important social and theological issues of the era. The list of relevant issues is extensive: the fate of Greek temples and the reinterpretation of sacred space, confronting Hippocratic medicine, and the learned Greek intelligentsia. Since disease and a search for cure is a ubiquitous human need, the early Church embraced a healing ministry, in secular terms as well as in ritual healing. Incubation records show how the Church viewed dreams, conversion, or the notions of magic and divination. All these come within the framework of writing miracles: the transformation of the cult was thus incorporated into standard Church discourse, from ritual practice to proper literary genres. This first comprehensive monograph on Christian incubation examines the rich material of all the relevant Greek miracle collections: those of Saint Thecla, Cyrus and John, the different versions of Saint Cosmas and Damian and saint Artemios, as well as the minor incubation saints, As a result, it unfolds the transformation of healing sites and practices related to dreams as they spread across Byzantium, from rural Asia Minor to Constantinople and Alexandria. ‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 269 pages, Size:170 x 240 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503608198.‎

‎Summary Bad arguments have never been in short supply. The scholarly interest they have elicited in recent years, on the other hand, is quite exceptional. Fallacy studies have become a well established and flourishing field of argumentation theory. Without notable exception, the ever-growing literature on argumentative failures suffer from a conspicuous lack of interest in Mediaeval fallacy theory - arguably the most creative stage in the whole history of argumentation theories. The standard story is that after Aristotle got off to a tentative start, the study of fallacies laid dormant until people at Port Royal and John Locke revived it in spectacular fashion. Fallacies in the Arabic, Byzantine, Hebrew and Latin Traditions will show that this narrative is misleading, if not altogether false. Free of boundaries or limitations imposed by differences in discipline, language and culture, the volume will provide ample and unambiguous record of the exegetical proficiency, technical expertise and argumentative savoir-faire typically displayed by mediaeval logicians jurists and theologians on issues whose complexity we underestimate to some extent - such as the problem of defining what a fallacy is or the pitfalls of linguistic expression. Working its way from the inside out within each mediaeval tradition and comparing mediaeval findings and lessons to contemporary views and trends, the volume will show where the potential for novelty and the rightful place of mediaeval theories of fallacies lies within contemporary argumentation studies. ‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, approx. 304 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 tables b/w., Language(s):English, French. ISBN 9782503598956.‎

‎Summary The essays collected in this volume focus on the Ancient Greeks' perception of foreigners and of foreign lands as potential sources of knowledge. They aim at exploring the hypothesis that the most adventurous intellectuals saw foreign lands and foreigners as repositories of knowledge that the Greeks ????? had to engage with, in the hope of bringing back home valuables in the form of new ideas. It is a common place to state that the ?Greeks? displayed xenophobia, which is probably best exemplified in the binary and ethnocentric division of humanity in two groups: the Greek world (i.e., the hellenophones) and the others, the Barbarians - those who speak foreign languages. This attitude of insularism and defiance, however, did not hinder the curiosity of Greek and Roman societies towards strangers. Lycurgus, Pythagoras, Democritus, etc.: there is a long list of sages and philosophers who travelled around the world for a significant period of time. The Greeks had a rich and varied relationship with foreign lands and people, which made possible a real circulation of knowledge throughout the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic times; this is also true of the Roman Empire. Each of the articles included in this collective work explore one aspect of the ?stranger? as a possible source of knowledge, with contributions mostly focused on Plato, Xenophon, Democritus, Aristotle, Diogenes, Cicero and Galen. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 345 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):French, Italian, English. ISBN 9782503595719.‎

‎Summary The exemplum held immense power in antiquity, especially in the political field. What role did historical or legendary figures from the Greco-Roman past play during the Empire in speeches intended to build, legitimise or question power? How were they selected? How did they work? These are the questions that the eighteen contributions in this volume seek to answer. This multifaceted approach crosses several literary genres, including poetry, historiography, and political or philosophical discourse, which are examined over six centuries. It considers different types of power or authority (imperial power, but also the authority of the magistrate in the Greek city during Roman domination, and the power of bishops). This highlights the plasticity of exempla that, depending on the context, could justify or question a vast diversity of ideologies and practices of power. ‎Summary Ancient commentaries on poetry - due to their heteronomous nature, their miscellaneous character, and the fact that most of them are transmitted in abridged and anonymous form - are usually not considered 'authorial' texts in the same way as poems or literary prose are. Nevertheless, as didactic texts, they rely on authority to convey their interpretation, and they also often seem to have been perceived as products of authorial activity, as paratexts, references and pseudepigraphic attributions demonstrate. The aim of this volume is to explore this tension and to examine commentaries and scholia on poetry in terms of authorship and 'authoriality'. The contributions use several Latin and Greek corpora as case studies to shed light on how these texts were read, how they display authorial activity themselves, and how they fulfil their function as didactic works. They provide reflections on the relationship of author, authorship, and authority in 'authorless' traditions, explore how authorial figures and authorial viewpoints emerge in an implicit manner in spite of the stratified nature of commentaries, investigate the authorial roles adopted by commentators, compilers and scribes, and elucidate how commentators came to be perceived as authors in other exegetic traditions. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 234 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, French, German. ISBN 9782503602844.‎

‎Summary Ancient philosophy is known for its organisation into distinct schools. But those schools were not locked into static dogmatism. As recent scholarship has shown, lively debate persisted between and within traditions. Yet the interplay between tradition and disagreement remains underexplored. This volume asks, first, how philosophers talked about differences of opinion within and between traditions and, second, how such debates affected the traditions involved. It covers the period from the first century BCE, which witnessed a turn to authoritative texts in different philosophical movements, through the rise of Christianity, to the golden age of Neoplatonic commentaries in the fifth and sixth centuries CE. By studying various philosophical and Christian traditions alongside and in interaction with each other, this volume reveals common philosophical strategies of identification and differentiation. Ancient authors construct their own traditions in their (polemical) engagements with dissenters and opponents. Yet this very process of dissociation helped establish a common conceptual ground between traditions. This volume will be an important resource for specialists in late ancient philosophy, early Christianity, and the history of ideas. TABLE OF CONTENTS Albert Joosse and Angela Ulacco ? ‎Summary The archaeological excavations conducted from one end of the Mediterranean zone to the other have illuminated the place of gods in the ritual practices in the dwellings of the Graeco-Roman era. The discovery of multiple artefacts, dedicated spaces, and figurative paintings support new avenues of historical, anthropological, and social reflection with the aim of better understanding domestic religious practices in the polytheistic contexts of antiquity. This collective volume organizes those reflections around three axes. The first axis centres on identifying the deities that were favoured in domestic sanctuaries. Which gods are represented and which are not? The second axis concerns the interrelationships evident within domestic ritual spaces and sanctuaries. The third axis is dedicated to the anthropology of rituals. Lines of inquiry informed by anthropological, social, and phenomenological approaches are assuming ever-greater importance in scholarship on Antiquity. It is from this perspective that the authors explore the role that domestic ritual spaces play in shaping the lived environment. ‎Ponce Pilate.

‎, Brepols - Institut d'Etudes Augustiniennes, 2023 Paperback, 878 pages, Size:165 x 245 mm, Language(s):French, Greek, Latin. ISBN 9782851213075.‎

‎Summary This monograph is the first study to highlight the plasticity of the figure of Pilate across Christian literature of the first millennium, as transmitted in Greek, Latin, Coptic, Syriac, Ge'ez, Armenian, Georgian, Slavic and Arabic. The name of the person Pilate is present in the memoirs and in the confessions of faith for the role of this Roman praefectus of Judea in the central event of Christianity which is the death sentence of Jesus of Nazareth. However, we only know his character as it was constructed by the authors of the first century - the Jewish writers, the authors of the Gospels which have become canonical or of the texts called apocrypha. It is from these sources that the authors of the patristic period elaborate figures of Pilate based on their analysis of his role in the Passion. Like the emperor depicted in the apocryphal texts, they in turn put Pilate on trial: how could the human judge judge the Judge of the universe? Who is responsible for the death of Jesus? Even though it is very largely sullied in the medieval West, the triune figure of Pilate as governor, judge and Roman is enriched with the features of the informant, of the evangelizer of the emperor, and even of the martyr and the saint. ‎Summary This book explores representations of saints in a variety of Latin and Greek late antique hagiographical narratives, such as saints' Lives, martyr acts, miracle collections, and edifying tales. The book examines techniques through which the saints featured in such texts are depicted as heroes and heroines, i.e., as extraordinary characters exhibiting both exemplary behaviour and a set of specific qualities that distinguish them from others. The book inscribes itself in a growing body of relatively recent scholarship that approaches hagiographical accounts not just as historical sources but also as narrative constructions. As such, it contributes to the development of a scholarly rationale which increasingly values imaginative and fictional aspects of hagiography in their own right, with the aim of answering broader questions about narrative creativity and ideology. For instance, individual chapters examine how hagiographical accounts mobilize and capitalize on earlier literary and rhetorical traditions or narrative models. These questions are specifically addressed to explore the narrative construction of characters. The chapters thereby encourage us to acknowledge that many hagiographers were more skilful than is often accepted. ‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 2 vols, 747 pages, Size:170 x 240 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9789607905970.‎

‎Summary The current monograph on Corcyrean history has the aim of offering a synthesis on the history of the island from the time of the Liburnian tribe of the Kerkyres, after which the island was named, to the end of the ancient world and the destruction of the temples of the Greek gods by ????????, the local episkopos. For this reason, it takes into consideration all available evidence deriving from Greek and Latin literary sources, epigraphic documents, Corcyrean coinage and archaeological excavations on the island of Corcyra. All aspects of Corcyrean history are discussed: the geography of the island, the relations with Corinth, Athens, the kings of Epirus and, finally, the Romans, its position in the international politics, the numerous staseis, its institutions, the Corcyrean navy, the island's legendary background and religious life, its coinage and numismatic policy. Prosopography, onomastics and name-giving practices are also discussed as well as Corcyrean society. Finally, different readings of some significant events of Greek history involving Corcyra are discussed: Corcyrean power, the Corcyreans at the sea battle of Salamis, Corcyra and the network of Corinthian colonies in the North West, the beginning of the Peloponnesian War and the real causes of this war, Corcyra during the Peloponnesian War, insularity, geographic position and their impact on the history and shaping of identity of the city-island? The first volume analyzes its geographical location, history, economy and monetary policy (chs I-XII), institutions, legendary background, identity and religious life (chs XIII, XIV, XV). The second volume studies Corcyrean prosopography (XVI), onomastics (XVII) and society (XVIII). This volume also contains lists of names, three Appendices, bibliography and different indices, plates depicting coins of Corcyra, and a map of the island.‎

‎Summary The Florilegium Coislinianum is a Byzantine alphabetical anthology compiled sometime between the end of the ninth and the beginning of the tenth century, most probably in Southern Italy. A research team based at the KU Leuven has already published several sections of the anthology. The present volume offers the first critical edition of three significant sections, namely, Books ?-Z. The Greek text is based on the collation of more than 25 witnesses and is accompanied by a set of apparatuses: manuscripts, sources, parallels in other anthologies, titles, apparatus criticus, apparatuses of comparison with sources and other anthologies, and marginalia. The critical edition is supplemented with a philological introduction which explores the manuscript tradition, offers a complete textual study of the witnesses that contain excerpts from Books ?-Z, and studies the links between the Florilegium Coislinianum and other relevant Byzantine florilegia such as Sacra, Corpus Parisinum, and Loci communes of a Ps.-Maximus the Confessor.‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 378 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:16 b/w, 5 col., 2 tables b/w., Language(s):English, German. ISBN 9782503598666.‎

‎Summary The leitmotif of this volume is the concept of ?author images?, which is used in modern literary studies to describe processes of production and reading of literary works and is here applied for the first time to the study of ancient works. As a means of analysing ancient literature, it captures the aspect of personification, which is characteristic of ancient author concepts, and at the same time points to the fact that there is a difference between ?image? and ?author? and that it is only an image and not the author himself that can be seen and grasped by readers. This makes the ?author image? particularly suitable for examining the intersections of material, rhetorical and mental representations of literary authorship that form the subject of this volume. Using selected examples from Latin and Greek literature, the contributors explore the fields of cultural experience that nourish authorial images. They discuss the manifold possibilities of visualising and representing a person's quality of being an author in general or being an author of specific works, be it physically through artworks or pictures, metaphorically through evoked authorial figures, through thematised representations of authors in a text, or through the combination of authorial images and texts. These issues are addressed in four overlapping sections, each focusing on different areas of the metaphor's application, namely material images in the form of artworks, knowledge about persons, textual images as authorial strategies and images in reception. ‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 442 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: French. ISBN 9782503595757.‎

‎Opera theologica. De processione Spiritus Sancti, De ordine in Trinitate, Epistula ad Alexium Iagoupem‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, cliv + 435 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language(s):Greek, English. ISBN 9782503528076.‎

‎Summary The volume comprises the editio princeps of the treatise On the Procession of the Holy Spirit by the Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus (1391-1425). The lengthy treatise was written in response to the tract of an anonymous Latin monk, presented to the Emperor during his sojourn in Paris (1400-1402). Information in the text and palaeographical evidence in the earlier version (Vat. gr. 1107) suggest that though the major part of the treatise was written in Paris, Manuel continued revising the text after his return to Constantinople, with the help of his fellow theologian Macarius Macres. The edition is based on the revised version (Barb. gr. 219) copied by an anonymous scribe belonging to Manuel's circle. The treatise comprises a brief Preface by the Emperor, a pr cis of the syllogism put forward by the Latin in defense of the dual procession of the Holy Spirit, and Manuel's refutation of the Latin arguments in 156 chapters, followed by the unpublished discourse On the Order in the Trinity. The volume also comprises an edition of Manuel's Letter to Lord Alexius Iagoupes, preserved in two manuscripts (Par. gr. 3041 and Barb. gr. 219). In this long epistolary discourse, addressed ostensibly to his oikeios Alexius Iagoupes, but in reality to an anonymous Latinophron, Manuel defends his views on the study of theology and, to some extent, his imperial duties towards the Church. Internal evidence in the Letter enables us to identify the anonymous critic with Manuel Calecas, placing its composition ca. 1396. The edition of these texts, accompanied by three apparatuses (locorum parallelorum, criticus and fontium), is preceded by Bibliography, an Introduction and a study of the manuscript tradition with detailed description of the extant manuscripts, an examination of the texts, the relations of the manuscripts, and the stemmata codicum, followed by indices locorum Sacrae Scripturae, nominum and verborum.‎

‎Summary Disagreement, rivalry and dispute are essential to any intellectual development. This holds true for ancient cultures no less than for us today. From the classical period to the Hellenistic age and to Late Antiquity, competition and polemics have shaped the course of intellectual history in Antiquity. Polemical encounters and controversies are often linked to group identities and intellectual networks such as philosophical schools, textual traditions, artistic circles and religious communities. This collection of studies sprang from the ambition to study the interplay between polemics and intellectual networks from a variety of perspectives and disciplines. The volume gathers fifteen case studies by leading scholars and young researchers alike. They address a wide range of topics, from the Old Academy and the Hellenistic schools to the Neoplatonic commentators of Late Antiquity, from biographical literature to literary criticism, from artistic manuals to scientific treatises, and from pagans to Christians. As multi-sided as the picture that emerges from these case studies may be, they all testify to the fact that implicit and explicit polemics are ubiquitous in ancient Greek and Roman literature and have served as triggers of intellectual progress across times and disciplinary boundaries. ‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 249 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:6 col., 2 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Greek. ISBN 9782503611723.‎

‎Summary Public religious ritual and private devotional practice together occasioned much of the production of Byzantine poetry. This includes not only hymns, an integral part of the liturgy since Late Antiquity, but also versified texts with a specific liturgical function (synaxaria, calendars, metrical prefaces), metrical hagiography, epigrams (inscribed on church buildings, icons, religious objects, books), or poems with a more personal character, such as versified prayers, catanyctic poems (i.e., poems of contrition) and self-addressed poems (eis heauton). These texts often have much in common, well beyond their metrical form: from their contexts of performance and reception to the themes, literary motifs, and rhetorical devices they contain. It was not uncommon for a single author to write in a variety of the aforementioned genres; and yet these texts are rarely studied together (not least due to the specialized nature of the expertise of individual scholars). Later Byzantium offers us a particularly rich spectrum of sacred poetry, which has only recently started to arouse significant interest. While most of its poetic genres have a long history in Byzantine literature, their metamorphoses in this period - connected to changes in socio-political, cultural and religious conditions - deserve closer study. It is the purpose of this volume to propose a broader scholarly approach to the aesthetics of Byzantine poetry, taking into consideration the contexts of religious practice and devotion from c. the 11th to the 15th centuries. ‎Summary In spite of its importance, Theodore Anagnostes' Church History has attracted only little scholarly attention so far. To a large extent, we still rely on the assertions of philologists and historians from around the turn of the 19th to the 20th centuries, and the authoritative edition of the text is still the one published by C. G. Hansen in 1971, which for the most part remained unchanged in its 1995 reissue. The studies collected in this volume aim to fill this gap in the literature and to answer three main questions: (1) How can Theodore's working method and the aim of his work be reconstructed? (2) To what extent can the Church History be considered a reliable historical source? And (3) which impact did the work have on contemporary and later historiography? In close connection with the bilingual (Greek-English) edition of the Church History that was recently published, the present volume thus aims to provide a closer and more differentiated appraisal of Theodore Anagnostes and his historiographical project. ‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 428 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: French. ISBN 9782503596389.‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 483 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:6 tables b/w., Language: French. ISBN 9782503596341.‎
