‎Summary The rich literary production of Gaza in the fifth and sixth centuries AD has received quite some attention in recent scholarship. Yet, the figure and work of Procopius the Sophist, as author of catenae, compiler, and epitomist of patristic exegesis, have remained relatively unknown and under-explored. This collection of essays delves deeply into Procopius' exegetical work. At the outset, a strong case is made that one should distinguish between the famous orator of Gaza and "the Christian sophist" Procopius. A first large section of the book deals with the Genesis Epitome that is studied from three different angles: the limited and as a rule critical use of Origen and his tradition; the importance given to Theodore of Mopsuestia's exegesis of Gen 1-3; and the relations between Procopius' Epitome and John Philoponus' De opificio mundi. The section on the Exodus Epitome studies the specificity of Procopius' work in comparison to the Catena on Exodus, the way the material is organised, and the literary genre of the work. The volume further contains contributions on the connections between the Scholia on Kings attributed to Procopius, the type B catena, and the so-called "Catena Lipsiensis"; the relations between Procopius' Catena on Proverbs and other catenae on this book; the sources of the Isaiah Epitome that show a diligent and able compiler at work; and the comparison between the characteristic features of Procopius' Epitomes and those of the Catena III on Obadiah. As a whole, it offers a wide perspective and significantly advances research on, and our knowledge of, Procopius the Christian sophist, a still somewhat mysterious early Byzantine author and scholar. ‎Summary Through the word corpus, the metaphor of the body is applied to a collection of works by the same author that are transmitted together. These works not only share the same skin, the manuscript, but also function organically thanks to a complex system of paracontents. It is possible to see this system at work in the case of only a very few medieval authors throughout history, cultures and languages; the Corpus Nazianzenum and the Corpus Dionysiacum are such instances. Both Gregory of Nazianzus and Dionysius the Areopagite are super-authors, who forged their own literary identity as much as they shaped the body of their writings. This sets both corpora apart from other collections of patristic works. They are also exceptional because of the large scale and enduring character of their cultural impact in the different cultures in which the corpora were translated, commented and annotated. ‎Summary Bad arguments have never been in short supply. The scholarly interest they have elicited in recent years, on the other hand, is quite exceptional. Fallacy studies have become a well established and flourishing field of argumentation theory. Fallacies in the Arabic, Byzantine, Hebrew and Latin Traditions will show that this narrative is misleading, if not altogether false. ‎Summary Ancient philosophy is known for its organisation into distinct schools. But those schools were not locked into static dogmatism. As recent scholarship has shown, lively debate persisted between and within traditions. Yet the interplay between tradition and disagreement remains underexplored. This volume asks, first, how philosophers talked about differences of opinion within and between traditions and, second, how such debates affected the traditions involved. By studying various philosophical and Christian traditions alongside and in interaction with each other, this volume reveals common philosophical strategies of identification and differentiation. Ce lexique contenait de nombreuses mentions d'auteurs disparus, se rapportant des toponymes du monde antique connu des Grecs et des Romains. l'int rieur de ce lexique, nous avons choisi d' tudier plus sp cialement ceux situ s en Europe occidentale (p ninsule ib rique, Gaule, Germanie et Bretagne antiques), en lien avec les sites arch ologiques connus s'y rapportant. L'ouvrage ayant t abr g plusieurs reprises au cours du Moyen ge, la confrontation de l'ensemble des notices a permis de proposer de nouvelles attributions d'auteurs antiques, leur nom et leur citation ayant tr s souvent disparu des manuscrits conserv s. Par ailleurs l'analyse pr cise de la transmission de l'oeuvre apporte un clairage nouveau sur les moments o ce grammairien a t lu et utilis , du VIe s. jusqu' sa red couverte la fin du XVe s. La structure m me du lexique permet de revenir sur la lexicographie antique et m di vale, et d'envisager les apports la fois des grammairiens et des auteurs antiques (pour la plupart g ographes et historiens) qui taient cit s. Enfin, le cadre g ographique choisi permet d'explorer les autres textes antiques ainsi que les donn es arch ologiques depuis l' poque grecque archa que jusqu' la fin de l'Empire romain. Nous avons inclus dans ce travail une analyse et une traduction de l'Ora maritima d'Avi nus, afin de compl ter l' tude de la p ninsule ib rique et du Midi de la Gaule. ‎Summary Isaac Argyros was a leading astronomer and theologian of the late 14th century, who spent most of his life at the Chora monastery in Constantinople. Besides several works on astronomy, he wrote a number of treatises against the Palamites in the tradition of his teacher and mentor Nicephorus Gregoras: (1.) De quattuor modis participationis Dei; (2.) De lumine Transfigurationis ad Gedeonem Zographum; and (3.) Solutio quaestionis cuiusdam Palamiticae. Former emperor John Cantacuzenus composed a lenghty treatise against Argyrus (Contra Argyrum), in which he attacks the fact that Argyros and his followers deny three things: that the seven spirits referred to by Isaiah are uncreated; that the grace of God is uncreated; and that men receive gifts of God in an immediate manner. Together, the four texts in this edition shed light on an interesting chapter in the palamite controversy.‎

‎Summary Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906), descendant of a wealthy and well-known family of bankers, inherited quite young, through a series of unpredictable circumstances, the enormous fortune of Thomas Coutts, her maternal grand-father. She spent most of her long life in London, where she occupied a prominent position in society, becoming well-known not only for her splendid life-style and her important literary and political acquaintances, as, for instance, Charles Dickens and Admiral Nelson, but also for her active role as a philanthropist. This book explores a little-known side of her life; although she did not know Greek, she became the owner of ca. 100 Greek manuscripts, mostly theological, datable between the tenth and the sixteenth century, a part of which she donated to Highgate School. The manuscripts, with all the Baroness's possessions, were dispersed at auction in 1921 and in 1987 and are now mainly divided between American and European University Libraries. This book has identified for the first time the Baroness's Greek manuscripts, located and described them in detail, with special attention to their script style and their origin, adding to their description one or two plates of each codex. ‎Summary Eusebius of Caesarea in Palestine, active between the end of the third century and the beginning of the fourth, is the Christian author who has handed down to us, in the form of quotations, the greatest number of Greek philosophical texts. Yet his precise relationship to philosophy has never been the subject of a comprehensive study. This book, which brings together contributions by leading specialists, aims to provide an initial overview. The analyses, covering most of Eusebius' works, starting with the Preparation for the Gospel, show the importance of philosophy in his thought. Beyond the use he makes of philosophers, sometimes to criticise them, sometimes to appropriate their ideas, Eusebius stands out for his fairly good knowledge of philosophy, especially Platonic philosophy, the issues of which he seems to understand well. Although he takes up from his Christian predecessors the idea that Christianity is, as such, a ?philosophy,? this claim sometimes implies a technicality that is revealed not only in the way he quotes and comments on the philosophers, but also in the presence in his work, less visible at first sight, of concepts and methods of exposition that bear witness to a real philosophical culture. At the end of these studies, Eusebius of Caesarea, too often reduced to a ?court theologian? or to the status of ?Father of Ecclesiastical History,? emerges more as the scholar he was, both Greek and Christian, whose work and thought are inseparable from the philosophical context in which they were born. Most of them, immigrants to the West after the Fall of Byzantium, harmoniously integrated into their host countries, practiced and perfected their knowledge of the Latin language and literature, excelled in arts and letters and, in many cases, managed to obtain civil, political and clerical offices. They wrote original poetic and prose works in Latin, for literary, scholarly and/or political purposes. They also translated Greek texts into Latin, and vice versa. The contributors to this volume explore the multifaceted aspects of the knowledge of the Latin language and literature by these scholars. Among the many issues addressed in the volume are: the reasons that urged Post-Byzantine scholars to compose Latin works and disseminate Ancient Greek works to the West and Latin texts to the East, their audience, the fate of their projects, and their relations among them and with Western scholars.
