ROBERT ESTIENNE'S INFLUENCE ON LEXICOGRAPHY
DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has a few small nicks and one small tear. Rubbing to DJ. Minor bumping to book. ; Towering above printers of his time and their successors for many years afterward was the figure of Robert Estienne, the great French lexicographer of the sixteenth century, whose contribution to knowledge and its dissemination is the subject of this authoritative book. The span of Robert Estienne's life (1503 - 1559) encompassed the historical epochs and events which shaped his career: the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the invention of printing by movable type. His keen interest in the revival of ancient literatures and languages and his training in the art of printing pointed the road he would travel, and the climate of opinion in the Reformation determined his destiny. Robert Estienne promoted classical learning by printing the works of good authors; to spread knowledge of ancient literature he compiled dictionaries and grammars which were adopted by most of the universities of Europe. His dictionary of proper names of Biblical and classical origin, the Dictionarium historicum ac poeticum, became one of the great source books for later compilers of dictionaries and for authors. Ben Jonson showed familiarity with his texts; Spenser and Milton sometimes set translations of his phraseology directly into their poetry. Perpetuation of the few errors he made is one sure proof that his dictionaries were used and copied. An exemplar of learning in the classics and scripture, he searched in ancient manuscripts to avoid repeating the numerous errors that had crept into Bible translations over hundreds of years. ; 136 pages

WHO'S WHO IN NON-CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY
Most books on mythology are primarily concerned with the Greek and Roman tradition, giving the equally vibrant myths of other cultures short shrift. Providing a much-needed solution to this problem, this unique guide offers wide-ranging and thorough coverage of non-classical mythological figures, from the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas to Zu, the lion-headed Sumerian storm bird. With its global, multicultural perspective, Who's Who in Non-Classical Mythology presents exciting and readable accounts of the gods, heroes, and myths of Europe (including the Celts, Teutons, Slavs, and Basques) , the Americas, Africa, Australia, China, Japan, and Indonesia. For those interested in a fresh approach to world mythology it is indispensable; for lovers of the classical tradition it will open up a whole new world. ; 235 pages

DICTIONARY OF ROMAN RELIGION
Very faint shelfwear to DJ. ; Long overshadowed by Greek mythology or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due and set in its full context as no other reference source has done before. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods, Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic god Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion contains more than 1,400 entries, covering topics such as festivals, sacrifices, temples, burial rites, deities and spirits, and historical religious events. The different religions are also covered: Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, which were all part of the Roman religious world. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. Complete with illustrations and helpful cross-references, this dictionary is both comprehensive and essential for students and researchers. For those interested in ancient religions, myths and legends, Roman society, and classical studies, this dictionary is a welcome and novel edition to the vast library on ancient Roman life. ; 288 pages
