Grove, George D.C.L. (ed.)
A Dictionary of Music and Musicians: Volumes I-IV
Complete four-volume set, genuine first editions as issued. (1879-1890, the first three volumes are printed with the then held belief there would be just one more volume to follow. Therefore, Vol. 1 states it is one of two, Vol. 2 states it is two of three, and so on. Vol.4 includes an appendix) Half leather bound, with marbled paper sides, marbled endpapers and marbled pageblock. The spines each have six raised bands and gilt lettering. The boardcovers reflect flaws commensurate with the shelf life and handling of volumes of this age; bumped corners, worn leather, and some small tears and creasing. Rear spine strip of Vol.I is detached from the body of the book at one end, with the rear paper side and endpaper heavily scuffed and worn. Foxing is present in all four volumes, mainly on the F&R endpapers and prelims, but extends to a few other pages within the volumes. Vol.I has a watermark to the page gutters of the initial few pages. Despite this and light sunning, the pages are in very good condition for a publication of this age. CN Used

ERNST
