br. Alberto Varvaro sceglie di partire da una definizione della filologia assai ampia: quella che considera problematico qualsiasi aspetto di qualsiasi testo, orale o scritto, e fa di questa problematicità l'oggetto della disciplina. La successiva trattazione dei diversi aspetti di questo tema, esposti in forma piana e illustrati con esempi tratti da una vasta gamma di testi (anche se con riferimento preferenziale al mondo del romanzo medievale, di cui l'autore è specialista), privilegia naturalmente i testi scritti di carattere letterario, ma ha sempre cura di tener presente che i problemi esaminati si presentano anche nei testi scritti non letterari e anche nei testi orali di qualsiasi tipo. Il libro tratta i problemi della costituzione del testo ma non considera che essi esauriscano l'ambito della filologia, poiché il testo rimane problematico anche dopo che sia stato costituito correttamente. Per questo motivo esso è preso in esame sotto tutti i suoi profili di enunciato, sia quando è formulato da un autore e si rivolge a un pubblico intenzionale, sia quando è ricevuto e interpretato anche da individui cui l'autore non pensava affatto o addirittura che escludeva. Che è poi quanto accade con la massima parte delle opere del passato o di tradizioni diverse da quella cui noi lettori apparteniamo.
