Otto, queste pagine svelano il carattere eccentrico e solitario della compagine di pensiero dell'autore di Dioniso e degli Dèi della Grecia. Otto vi esplora l'orizzonte mitico-religioso della poesia nell'epoca della modernità mostrando la sua tragica essenza: il desiderio cioè e, insieme, l'incapacità di rivivere l'esperienza della grecità olimpica, di rifarsi epos eroico. Per Otto, religione olimpica è la capacità di accogliere la forza dell'origine in un ordine della forma e del rigore spirituale. Nella modernità non v'è traccia di una simile capacità, c'è evocazione romantica dell'origine o astratta sublimazione della forma: c'è scissione, tragedia. E, tuttavia, nel moderno la poesia vorrebbe ridestare gli antichi dèi, tornare a una rinnovata solidarietà tra mito e culto. Con la poesia di Hòlderlin, sottratta alla profanità, resa «pura» e «pia», il «tragico» vorrebbe porsi in attesa della sua catarsi, farsi profezia del possibile ritorno degli antichi dèi del culto. Ma invano. L'analisi di Otto coinvolge per intero lo stato di scissione del moderno, incapace di trovar scampo e rifugio fuori dal suo sterile dominio.In queste pagine - come scrive Gianni Carchia nell'Introduzione - «un'ascesi anti-tragica e antimoderna, antitragica perché anti-moderna, vuole così alla fine sottrarre per sempre al tempo le figure, nate storicamente ma spiritualmente immortali, degli dèi olimpici.
