Questo manuale, indirizzato in modo particolare agli studenti universitari di Filologia romanza, intende offrire un quadro d'insieme dei fenomeni fonetici, morfologici, sintattici e lessicali che hanno determinato quelle metamorfosi: con un linguaggio semplice, che non rinuncia però alla precisione del tecnicismo, vengono affrontati in chiave storico-comparativa tutti i principali aspetti dell'evoluzione linguistica, in modo necessariamente sintetico e descrittivo, ma senza rinunciare a singoli approfondimenti problematici. Uno spazio di rilievo è ovviamente riservato al latino cosiddetto "volgare", e al concetto stesso che si cela sotto tale etichetta: un concetto messo frequentemente in discussione, ma che mantiene inalterato, nonostante tutto, il proprio ruolo centrale nella storia linguistica romanza, al di là delle dispute, spesso solo nominalistiche, che lo vedono coinvolto.
