‎Til Vietnam. - [SIGNED BY SARTRE AND DE BEAUVOIR - ONE OF 100 COPIES.]‎

‎(København [Copenhagen], 1967). 4to. Original illustrated self-wrappers. 36, (4) pp. (Containing 16 poems on 16 leaves and 16 full-page illustration on 16 leaves). Exceptionally fine and clean.‎

‎Nr. 50 out of 100 numbered copies of this interesting, richly illustrated, publication that was issued in connection with the second International Tribunal on War Crimes, which took place in Denmark. The present copy is signed by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir on front free end-paperThe International Tribunal on War Crimes was initiated by Bertrand Russell in 1966 in order to investigate the background for and art and nature of the American warfare in Vietnam. The tribunal was constituted by a number of internationally famous scientists, authors, and cultural personas" because of their status in society, their moral opposition against America's war-crimes in Vietnam was internationally very effective. The first session of the Tribunal was planned to take place in Paris in April 1967, but when De Gaulle proclaimed that the French government would not allow the arrangement, the first session was quickly moved to Stockholm, where it took place from May 2nd till 10th. It was then decided that the second session should take place in Denmark, which contrary to neutral Sweden through NATO was an ally of USA, and where the press coverage would thus be more effective. Thus, in 1967 a ""Danish Bertrand Russell Foundation"" was founded - supporting the international war crime tribunal -, which included many of the leading Danish intellectuals of the time. Russell was 95 at the time of the second session, and he couldn't participate, so Sartre acted as president of the jury instead. This session took place at the University of Roskilde, Denmark, from November 18th till December 1st 1967.Another member of the Tribunal was Simone de Beauvoir, who was also present, together with Sartre, in Roskilde the last weeks of November 1967. The present work was issued by the Copenhagen office of the International War Crime Tribunal and the Collection for Vietnam. The work is constituted by contributions by numerous famous Danish poets and artists of the period, who wished to express their solidarity with the International War Crime Tribunal. The work was issued in 1500 copies, 100 of which were numbered.‎

‎Conspectus et aestimatio ethicae Corani. Adjecto animadversionum philologicarum in Arabicos scriptores specimine. - [DAMPE'S DISSERTATION]‎

‎Hafnia, Schultz, 1812. 4to. In contemporary blank green boards. Light wear to extremities. Internally nice and clean, printed on heavy blue paper. (4), 62, (2) pp.‎

‎Exceedingly rare first edition, possibly gift-copy, of Dampe's doctoral dissertation on ethics in the Koran. Dampe was subject to arguable the most profound miscarriage of justice in Danish history. In 1820, Dampe was sentenced to death for advocating the abolition of absolute monarchy and the establishment of a free constitution. However, his sentence was commuted to exile and he was imprisoned in ""the Balloon"" on the tiny island of Fredriksø. Following the abolition of exile as a form of punishment in 1840 he was placed under house arrest on Bornholm. In 1848, he was granted amnesty by Denmark's new king, Frederick VII. The following year, in 1849, the Danish Constitution was introduced pretty much the way Dampe had proposed. His dissertation provides an overview of the main principles of the Quran’s ethical teachings, the arguments for following them, pre-Islamic Arab ethics before Muhammad, and what Muhammad thought about himself. Then follows an excursus on Muhammad’s clever ways of granting himself authority and finally, an appendix with ten pages of philological commentary. Biblioteca Danica I, 596.‎

‎Institutiones ad fundamenta linguae Hebraeae. Quibus via panditur ad ejusdem analogiam restituendam, et vindicandam in usum collegii domestici.. - [FUNDAMENTAL WORK IN SEMITIC PHILOLOGY]‎

‎Lugduni Batavorum, Johannem Luzac, 1737. 4to. Uncut in a bit later half calf with gilt lettering to spine. ""ex Bibliotheca Petri Hendrix [1784-1849] / 1921"" to pasted down front end-paper. Headlines in neat contemporary hand to each leaf. Extremities with wear. Last 11 ff. with heavy damstain, otherwise internally nice and clean. (36), 501, (86) pp.‎

‎First edition Schultens’ important work in which he fundamentally changed comparative Semitic philology. He stated that Hebrew is no longer could be regarded as the first language, from which the other Oriental languages diverged, but as one Semitic language among the others. “Schultens emphasized with revolutionary exaggeration the extent of the change brought about by the new knowledge. Far from accepting the traditional view that Arabic (like other languages) was a degenerate form of Hebrew, Schultens maintained that Hebrew was only one Semitic dialect, while the purest and clearest such dialect was Arabic…But in spite of the high value accorded to Arabic by Schultens, his use of it was infelicitous and far from commendable even from the point of view of an Arabist. He nevertheless marked the beginning of an epoch which continued into the mid-20th century, in which one of the main forms of learned linguistic study was the use of cognate languages for the elucidation of difficulties in Hebrew” (Barr, “Literature,” 1395.)‎

‎CURTIUS, GEORGIUS.‎

‎Grundzüge der Griechischen Etymologie. 2 Theile. - [FUNDAMENTAL WORK ON THE THEORY OF LANGUAGE]‎

‎Leipzig, Teubner, 1858-1862. 8vo. Uniformly bound in two contemporary half calf binding with gilt lettering to spine. Spines with wear and scratches. Internally nice and clean. XIV, 371, (1) pp. + 1 folded plate" XVI, 398, (1 - errata) pp.‎

‎The scarce first edition of Curtius' magnum opus, a work of immense importance to the theory of the Greek language and one of the most important, influential, and useful works on the theory of language in general. ""Nach den Ansichten Aller, auch der Gegner, gehören diese ""Grundzüge"" zu den werthvollsten und nützlichsten Werken der Sprachwissenschaft überhaupt"" (Ernst Windisch in: Sebeok, Portraits of Linguists, I: p. 332).The work took Curtius about a decade to write, and the two volumes appeared with four years in between them. It is very rare to find any of the two volumes in the first edition, and both volumes in the first edition are almost never seen together. The work became immensely popular, and five editions appeared between this first and 1879. Georg Curtius (1820-1885) is one of the leading German classicists of all times. His writings were fundamental to the study of the Greek language and are among the most profound, influential and thorough ever written.Within the theory of language, one can hardly point to a work more generally influential than the present, which also excels in stringently and eloquently pointing out the connection between etymology and phonetics and proving that only through phonetics has etymology become a science.‎
