‎"HUMBOLDT, WILHELM von.‎

‎Über die Verschiedenheit des menschlichen Sprachbaues und ihren Einsfluss auf die Geistige Entwickelung des Menschengeschlechts. - [THE PHILOSOPHY OF SPEECH - PMM 301]‎

‎Berlin, 1836. 4to. Bound with the original patterned end-papers in a later red leather binding with raised bands and gilding to spine. First and last leaves with a bit of light brownspotting. XI, (1), 511 pp.‎

‎First edition of this classic study of human language, which founded the metaphysics of language - Humboldt's philological testament that founded the theory of the structure of language as the expression of the character of the language-speakers. Up until Humboldt and his ""On the Diversity of Human Language..."" [i.e. the present work], language was viewed as a dead means of communication, as a mere thing. With the present work, a completely new approach to language is founded, one that forms the basis of modern linguistics and upon which linguistic thought and philosophy is now based: ""Language is not a finished thing at rest, but something that at every moment emerges, comes into being, and perishes"" it is not so much a dead product, but far more a continuously active production... Language is the forming organ of thought."" (from the present work). Humboldt died while preparing his magnum opus, on the ancient Kawi language of Java, which thus remained a fragment, but which was published the year after his death (1835), in 1836. The present work, the most important of his productions and the final statement of his lifelong study of language, served as a general introduction to this. This lengthy foreword was completed by Humboldt himself and after his death edited by his younger brother, the great traveler and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. It was published both as a separate treatise, as here, and as the introduction to the ancient Kawi language of Java. ""On the Diversity of Human Language…"" remains one of the most important attempts at drawing philosophical conclusions from comparative linguistics. This founding work of philosophy of speech ""... first clearly laid down that the character and structure of a language expresses the inner life and knowledge of its speakers, and that languages must differ from one another in the same way and to the same degree as those who use them. Sounds do not become words until a meaning has been put into them, and this meaning embodies the thought of a community. What Humboldt terms the inner form of a language is just that mode of denoting the relations between the parts of a sentence which reflects the manner in which a particular body of men regards the world about them. It is the task of the morphology of speech to distinguish the various ways in which languages differ from each other as regards their inner form, and to classify and arrange them accordingly."" (Encycl. Britt.). With this work, Humboldt founds a theory of language that becomes the basis of modern thought on the subject. The basis being the identification of human language as a rule-governed system (and not merely a collection of words and phrases paired with meaning). Chomsky's thory of language, for instance, is based on Humboldt's. Humboldt has also been credited as an originator of other linguistic theories, such as the linguistic relativity hypothesis, and as the originator of the term ""worldview"". As Alfred Dove points out [in ""Portraits of Linguists"", edt. by T.A. Sebeok], the philosophy of language that Humboldt presents in the present work should remind one of the main works by his master, Immanuel Kant, as they present a fundamental critique of the capabilities of language. Humboldt's purely organic theory of the origin and essence of language, of the way it lives and works, not only forms the basis of certain strands of modern linguistics, it fundamentally does away with the entire mechanic comprehension of purely philological doctrine, paving the way for a metaphysical and more complex understanding of language and human nature. Dove compares the success and influence of the linguistic theory of the present work to what happens in the fundamental work ""Kosmos"" by Humboldt's younger brother, Alexander. Both had the ability to unite the bold sweep of the universal tendency of the 18th century with the prudent method of individual scientific investigation of the 19th century. ""In this, his philological testament, Humboldt attempts the classification of peoples according to language. More important than the classification itself was the corollary to it, which seemed to Humboldt to imply that the development of individual languages is affected by physiology, ethnography, history, geography, political and religious relationships, and that stages in the cultural development of peoples leave strongly marked traces in their languages. In the words of A.H. Sayce, a great philologist of our own day: ""This essay first clearly laid down that the character and structure of a language expresses the inner life and knowledge of the speakers, and that languages must differ from one another in the same way and to the same degree as those who use them... What Humboldt terms the inner form of the language is just that mode of denoting the relations between the part of a sentence which reflects the manner in which a particular body of men regards the world about them.""‎

‎"WOLFIUS [WOLF], FRID. AUG.‎

‎Prolegomena ad Homerum sive de Operum Homericum prisca et genuina forma variisque mutationibus et probabili ratione emendandi. Volumen I (all that appeared). - [THE NEW PHILOLOGY - PMM 248]‎

‎Halis Saxonum (Halle), E Libreria Orphanotrophei, 1795. 8vo. Contemporary half calf with a bit of wear, especially to corners and edges. Gilding to title-label worn off. Paper over boards loosening at edges. Overall fine and tight. A light damp stain to upper margin and a few leaves with some light brownspotting.‎

‎Scarce first edition of the epoch-making work that founded modern philological scholarship and began the modern debate over the date of writing of Homer's works, creating in turn the two Homeric schools of thought, the Analysts and the Unitarians. Although the work bears on the title-page the words ""Volumen I"", no second volume ever appeared, and Wolf never made any attempt to compose it. ""When Wolf took up his professorship in 1783, a critical point in the history of education had been reached. New ideas derived from Locke and Rousseau were at work and Wolf longed to enter the fray. He found able and enlightened allies in the ministers of Frederick the Great, and with their help and by his enthusiasm he was able to carry out his long-cherished plan to give a new basis to the science of philology. To Wolf this meant philology in the original sense - love of letters, of learning and of language. He defined it as ""the knowledge of human nature as exhibited in antiquity"""" its matter was everything that remained of ancient culture, to which an equal care and scholarship must be devoted. The ""Prolegomena to Homer"", the best exposition of Wolf's beliefs, were written in a great hurry to meet the needs of a lecture course, and they have all the merits of good lectures: command of method, the gift of inspiration, penetration and breadth of view. Wolf's thesis is no theory, but a collection of great ideas, which laid the foundations for the dominance of German scholarship in the nineteenth century. They have inspired and given purpose to education ever since."" (Printing and the Mind of Man). With the 18th century came major developments in classical scholarship, the greatest of the classic epics being no exception - Homeric scholarship changed dramatically, and the end of the century saw the opening of the discussion which was to dominate the 19th and 20th centuries, namely that of the ""Homeric question"". The Homeric question is essentially the question of the identity of the poet(s) of the Homeric epics, and the nature of the relationship between ""Homer"" and the epics. In the 19th century it came to be the fulcrum between two opposed schools of thought, the Analysts and the Unitarians. The issue came about in the context of 18th-century Romantic interest in popular lays and folktale, and the growing recognition that the Homeric epics must have been transmitted orally before being written down, possibly much later than ""Homer"" himself. The key to determining who Homer was, lay in the answer to the question of when the poems were composed. The modern debate over exactly when they took on a fixed written form, began with the present work by Wolf. According to Wolf, the date of writing is among the first questions in the textual criticism of Homer. He considers the real mode of transmission of the poems and acknowledges that it was oral, arguing that they were composed in the mid-10th century BC. He further concludes that the Iliad and the Odyssey could not have been composed in the form in which we know them without the aid of writing and that they changed considerably over time in the hands of bards performing them orally and editors adapting written versions to contemporary tastes. The apparent artistic unity of the poems must have come about after their transcription. This new form of philological scholarship completely altered the way that philology has been done ever since the appearance of the present work.‎

‎"HJELMSLEV, LOUIS.‎

‎Omkring Sprogteoriens Grundlæggelse. [Prolegomena to a Theory of Language].‎

‎København [Copenhagen], Bianco Luno,1943. Lex8vo. Uncut in the original printed wrappers. The first upper right corners a bit bumped. Clean. 116 pp.‎

‎The seminal first edition of this breakthrough work in linguistics, which constitutes the basis of linguistic analysis and served as a main inspiration for Derrida's ""De la Grammatologie"". In 1943 the first edition of the main work of the great Danish linguist Louis Hjelmslev (1899-1965) appeared. The work appeared in the series ""Festskrift udgivet af Københavns Universitet i Anledning af Universitetets Aarsfest"" and bore the title ""Omkring Sprogteoriens Grundlæggelse"". The work was translated into English as ""Prolegomena to a Theory of Language"" and later into French as ""Prolegomenes a une theorie du langage "". This work came to represent a breakthrough in linguistics and formed an entirely new branch of this field.Hjelmslev had studied comparatvive linguistics in Copenhagen, Prague and Paris, when in 1931 he co-founded the ""Cercle Linguistique de Copenhague"", also known as the ""Copenhagen School of Linguistics"" with Viggo Brøndal (1887-1942). Hjelmslev's linguistic theories formed the basis of this seminal scool, which soon became one of the most important centres of structuralism in the world. The single most important cornerstone of this internationally highly influential school was the new theory on language that Hjelmslev had developed together with Hans-Jørgen Uldall. This theory consisted in the double duality of the linguistic sign and is now known as ""Glossematics"", a now generally used term, which was coined by the two. ""Glossematics"" represents an attempt to analyze the contents and the form of language on a coherent basis. Hjelmslev's theories of semiotics became hugely influential, and virtually all of the greatest European thinkers interested in language and theories of language throughout the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s were hugely inflenced by Hjemslev, whose theories remain of seminal character to this day.In his main work, ""Prolegomena to a Theory of Language"", Hjelmslev begins by ascertaining that ""- Language - human speech - is an inexhaustible wealth of manifold values. Language is inseparably linked to man and follows him in all of his doing. Language is the tool with which man moulds thought and feeling, mood, aspiring, will and action, the tool with which he influences and is influenced, the last and deepest condition of human society. [...]"" He then goes on to unfold a criticism of the linguistic methodologies in use at the time. He accepts Saussure's theories of language as a system of signs, the leading theories in this field at the time, but he claims that this only applies to theories of language use. Hjelmslev, however, wishes to establish a regular linguistic system, in which language is seen as a complex system made up of small units. He sees earlier linguistic methodologies as being merely descriptive, and as the first, he wishes to provide a methodology that is systematizing and provide a linguistic theory that is to found the basis of a rational form of linguistics. The theory that Hjelmslev thus develops here came to constitute an important contribution to modern general epistemology, a contribution that likewise constitutes the starting point of linguistic analysis. Linguistic analysis is set off with the theory propounded in this work that a sign not merely refers to one form, but to two, namely a content form and an expression form. At the same time, every function of a sign is twofold in that it is manifested by both the content substance and the expression substance, the first being the psychological manifestation of the sign, the second being the material substance, in which the sign is manifested. Thus, Hjelmslev puts forth a new form of semiotics, one in which language and linguistics are not necessarily bound to a spoken language, and one which is constituted by a scientific method of analysis. Because of this theory, a new philosophical tradition also sees the light of day, one inspired by the opposition to the widely accepted idea that images, in order to be understood, had to be translated into a phonetic substance or something more concrete. For Hjelmslev, the linguist finds meaning in from the form of content, and it is from the point of view of this form that the content substance must be analyzed. This theory deeply influenced both Deleuze, who often mentions Hjelmslev throughout his works, and Derrida, who's ""Grammatologie"" is deeply inspired by Hjelmslev's work, to which it bears numerous references and long quotations.‎
