‎First appearance of Morgenstierne's important paper on the Palula language. Morgenstierne published his initial research in 1926 but this is the first extended paper that documents the Palula language. Palula (also spelled Phalura, Palola, Phalulo, and also known as Ashreti or Dangarikwar, the name used by Khowar speakers), is a Dardic language spoken by approximately 10,000 people in the valleys of Ashret and Biori, as well as in the village Puri (also Purigal) in the Shishi valley, and at least by a portion of the population in the village Kalkatak, in the Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Georg Morgenstierne wrote that Chitral is the area of the greatest linguistic diversity in the world.‎

He was the first to systematically study the ancient Nordic languages and is the discoverer of the relations between the consonants in the Indo-European languages. This discovery served as the foundation of the rules Jacob Grimm later formulated, underlying the Germanic and High-German soundshifts. In PMM, Rask is identified as ""one of the founders of the modern science of language."" (PMM 266).‎

‎"RENAN, ERNEST.‎

‎Vie de Jésus. - [PMM 352 - THE HISTORICAL CHRIST]‎

‎Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, 1863. Royal 8vo. Bound in a nice contemporary red halfcalf with five raised bands to spine, with blindstamped borders to compartments. A very nice copy, also with the often lacking half-title (""Histoire des Origines du Christianisme. Livre premier""). (4), LIX, 462 pp. + (1) leaf (colophon).‎

‎True first edition of this seminal classic on the life of Jesus, which caused an immediate scandal when it appeared. Renan's masterpiece, which constitudes the first attempt to write a biography of Jesus the man and strongly puts forth the notion that the Bible too can be subject to historical investigation and critical scrutiny. The work enraged the Roman Catholic Church but was an immediate success in most of Europe. ""In six months sixty thousand copies of the French edition had been sold and edition succeeded edition. Renan regarded the book as the first of a series on the ""Origins of Christianity"", which he continued with ""The Apostles"" (1866), ""Saint Paul"" (1869), ""The Anti-Christ"" (1873), ""The Gospels"" (1877), ""The Christian Church"" (1879) and ""Marcus Aurelius"" (1881) but none of these emulated the success of the ""Life of Jesus""... Immediate success was partly a ""succès de scandale"" but this would not have kept the book alive. It is Renan's approach to the subject and his beautiful prose that gave it lasting eminence."" (PMM 352). This groundbreaking work analyses the personality of the man Jesus, -a figure created by Renan out of his mind but based on historical sources. ""It is a pastoral idyll with the central figure a gentle, albeit oracular visionary, his power to work miracles a part of his unique personality -the son of man, but not the Son of God... In this great work it seems clear that the audience he has found was the one he sought: the general reading public rather than the limited coterie of scholars"" and there is no doubt of the fact or the degree of his success."" (PMM 352). ""C'est le livre plus célèbre d'Ernest Renan (1823-1892) et le premier volume de l'Hisoire des origines du Christianisme""... on peut considérer cette ""Vie de Jésus"" comme une oeuvre de vulgarisation: l'auteur cherche à déterminer ce qui, au point de vue ""scientifique"", est de créance dans la vie du Nazaréen?"" (Laffont-Bompiani IV:681). Apart from causing a world-wide scandal, the work was also a world-wide success, and no matter how many harsh words can be said about the historical and religious contents of the work, there is no doubt about the fact that it influenced the destiny of Catholocism decisively and that it is a masterpiece of 19th century French literature. It is very elegantly written and is renowned for its description of the historical setting, charming descriptions of sceneries, its penetrating psychological analysis and its overall style and class. ""Il faut ajouter que la ""Vie de Jésus"" compte au nombre des livres les mieux écrits de son temps"" le charme de la peinture des paysages, le pittoresque géneralement exact des évocations historiques, l'analyse pénétrante de l'âme des personnages, des seductions du style enfin, n'ont pas été pour rien dans le succès universel de cette oeuvre."" (Laffont-Bompiani IV:681). Ernest Renan (1823-1892) was a French philologist, philosopher and historian. His father died when he was aged five, and his mother wanted him to become a priest. Until he was about 16 years old, he was trained by the Church, but due to his investigative and truth-seeking nature as well as his studies (e.g. Hebrew), he was in doubt as to the historical truth of the Scriptures, and with the help of his sister he chose his own path in life. ""He studied intensively the languages of the Bible and filled a number of minor academic positions, frequently encountering difficulties because of the heterodoxy and outspokenness of his religious opinions."" (Printing and the Mind of Man 352). In 1840 he began studying philosophy and later philology, in 1847 he took his degree as Agrégé de Philosophie and became master at the Lycée of Vendome. After having returned from a mission to Italy in the year 1850 where he gathered material for his historical-philosophical masterpiece, ""Averroës et l'Averroisme"", he was offered employment at the ""Bibliothèque Nationale"" (at the manuscript department). In 1861 he was chosen to become professor of Hebrew at the Collège de France, but because the emperor refused to ratify the appointment (inspired by the Clerical party), he was not established in the chair untill 1870. In 1878 he was elected for the Academy. Renan is considered a scolar of the greatest excellence and an impressive writer.‎

‎"DERRIDA, JACQUES.‎

‎De la grammatologie. - [THE MAIN WORK OF DECONSTRUCTION]‎

‎(Paris), Minuet, 1967. 8vo. Original wrappers. A very nice and clean copy with a slightly soiled spine. A bump to fore-edge. 445, (3) pp.‎

‎First edition (20 Septembre, 1967, numéro 630) of Derrida's seminal main work, the foundational text for deconstructive criticism.1967 marks a turning point in the history of modern philosophy, constituting the birth of ""Deconstruction"". In this one year, Derrida publishes all of his three break-through books, ""De la grammatologie"", ""L'écriture et la difference"" and ""La Voix et le phenomene"", profoundly altering the course of modern thought. Although all three books are responsible for the introduction of Deconstruction, it is primarily ""De la Grammatologie"", Derrida's magnum opus, that has come to be associated with this groundbreaking concept.""Jacques Derrida's revolutionary theories about deconstruction, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and structuralism, first voiced in the 1960's, forever changed the face of European and American criticism. The ideas in ""De la grammatologie"" sparked lively debates in intellectual circles that included students of literature, philosophy, and the humanities, inspiring these students to ask questions of their disciplines that had previously been considered improper. Thirty years later, the immense influence of Derrida's work is still igniting controversy..."" (Review, Spivak's translation of Derrida's ""Of Grammatology"", 1997).Derrida's concern is to bring to light the binary schema that is hidden in all kinds of texts and ideas of culture. In the present text Derrida brilliantly reveals some of the principles of deconstruction, not through theoretical explication, but, rather, by demonstration, showing that the arguments promulgated by their subject-matter exceed and contradict the oppositional parameters in which they are situated. Put into other words, deconstruction seeks to expose, and then to subvert, the various binary oppositions that undergird our dominant ways of thinking. The ideas that Derrida here present have had an enormous impact on a number of the human sciences, including psychology, literary theory, cultural studies, linguistics, feminism, sociology and anthropology. Due to this work, a whole new world of problematic suppression and marginalisation has become apparent, making ""De la grammatologie"" one of the most important philosophical works of the later part of the 20th century. ""One of the major works in the development of contemporary criticism and philosophy"". (J. Hillis Miller, Yale University).‎

Extremities with wear and front free end-papers heavily annotated. Each leaf printed in two collum. Multi-language (In Latin, Russian, French, and German).Internally fine. (2), 215 pp.‎

‎Russian translation of Joachim Lange's influential popular ""Colloquia Scholastica"" translated by Martin Schwanwitz. ""After having returned to the Academy of Science in 1735, Schwanwitz got the order to translate Joachim Lange's popular ""Colloquia Scholastica"" into Russian, whereas his colleague Johann Eberhard Fischer, rector of the Academy School's Latin Section, translated the Latin part into German. The new Latin-Russian-German-French version was published in 1738 at the Academy Press (reprints followed around 1748/49 [year, indicated on the title of this edition: 1738], in 1763 [number of copies published: 1200] and 1789). In Russian schools, the School Dialogues became highly popular and were used intensely until the end of the 18th century. They were indispensable in the lower German classes, where, according to the Academy school's curricula of 1748 and 1758, their use was compulsory. Later, in 1776, the Moscow University issued a version in five languages that also included a translation into Greek (further editions in 1785 and 1800).""

- [THE FINDING OF A LOST LANGUAGE]‎

‎Paris, Chez Treuttel et Würtz, 1824. Lex 8vo. Both volumes bound completely uncut in one near contemporary brown half calf with ornametal spine. A bit of wear to capitals, corners, and hinges. Occasional brownspotting. Overall a very nice copy. (Text-vol.:) (4), XVI, 410, (4, - 1 blank leaf + 1 leaf of book binder instructions) pp. + 16 plates, some folded" (2), 45 pp. + 32 plates (numbered 1-21 and A-K). Complete in two vols. w. all 38 lithographed plates.‎

‎Very rare first edition of the work in which the deciphering of the hieroglyphs was fully presented for the first time. In 1822 Champollion had read his ""Lettre a M. Dacier"" before the Academie des Inscriptions, and for the first time presented the key to reading hieroglyphs. His monumental work ""Précis du système hiéroglyphique"" appeared two years later, and in this richly illustrated work he presents his definitive, expanded analysis, and finally corrects the misleading mistakes of the other Egyptologists, counting also Thomas Young. Jean Francois Champollion (1790-1832), the father of Egyptology, is credited with actually deciphering the inscription on the famous Rosetta Stone, translating it, and breaking the mystery of the ancient hieroglyphic script"" he is therefore accepted as the founder of Scientific Egyptology, -a title primarily justified with the publication of this work. The Rosetta Stone was found in 1799 by French Troops and was immediately brought to England, where it has been ever since. The stone was (and is) of the utmost importance to the understanding of the Egyptian language, the principles of which were totally unknown up to this point. Because the hieroglyphic inscription on the stone is accompanied by a Greek and a Demotic one with the same contents, Champollion was able to crack the code of the hieroglyphs and to read a language that had not been read for far more than a millennium. Champollion was an extraordinary philologist, who, by the age of sixteen, besides Greek and Latin, mastered six ancient Middle Eastern languages, among these Coptic, the knowledge of which, unlike that of Egyptian, was never lost. As the first, Champollion realized the connection between the Coptic and the Egyptian language, and was able to identify many of the Egyptian words on the Rosetta Stone, as he could read them with their Coptic equivalents. He was the first to believe that both Demotic and hieroglyphs represented symbols, and not sounds as earlier presumed. After that he quickly realized that each single hieroglyph could represent a sign, and he began compiling a hieroglyphic alphabet. In his ""Précis du système hiéroglyphique"" he could finally, in 1824, prove that the glyphs represented sounds as well as concepts, according to context. Champollion is the constructor of our present code of the hieroglyphic alphabet. ""Further study enabled him to discover the values of a number of syllabic hieroglyphic signs, and to recognize the use of hieroglyphs as determinatives. In cases where the Greek text supplied him with the meaning of hieroglyphs of which he did not know the phonetic values, his knowledge of Coptic enabled him to suggest values which he found subsequently to be substantially correct. Further reference to determinatives and the importance of parallel passages and texts will be made later on in his work. Between 1822-24 CHAMPOLLION worked incessantly, and was enabled to modify much of his earlier views, and to develop his Alphabet, -and he evolved some rudimentary principles of Egyptian Grammar. The results of his studies at this period he published in his ""Précis du Système Hiéroglyphique"", Paris, 1824, wherein he took special pains to inform his readers that his system had nothing whatever to do with that of Dr. YOUNG."" (Wallis Budge, The Rosetta Stone in the British Museum, pp. 224-25). ""... Ces mémoires réunis formèrent le grand ouvrage publié aux frais de l'Etat en 1824 sous le titre ""Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens"", didié au roi."" (N.B.G. Vol. 9, p. 650).‎
