No other time and place can offer a roster like the Cinquecento: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Giorgione, Titian, and Correggio are the exalted luminaries in the constellation, and around them there is company of the magnitude of Sarto, Rosso, Pontormo, Bronzino, Parmigianino, Lotto, Tintoretto, and Veronese, to mention only some. The diversity of achievement of the painters is as remarkable as its quality; probably no earlier period offers so complex a picture of self-conscious differences of artistic style, in which an ethical attitude is often a major factor within an aesthetic one. The author delineates the painters' individualities and characterizes their important works. At the same time, however, he relates these individual events to categories and patterns that appear to a more general view of Cinquecento art. In ten carefully interwoven chapters he discusses the history of the classical style of the High Renaissance in the earlier decades of the century, the rise, spread, and eventual adulteration of the Mannerist style, and the events, in Venice and North Italy especially, that resist generalization and help make up the whole rich historical texture that is called the Late Renaissance. S. J. Freedberg was educated at Harvard University, where he received his doctorate in the history of art in 1940. He is Professor of Fine Arts at Harvard, where he has served as chairman of his department. He is the author of monographs on Parmigianino and Andrea del Sarto, and of a general work on painting of the High Renaissance in Rome and Florence. His publications have received the Faculty Prize of the Harvard University Press and the Morey Prize of the College Art Association. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. For service with the British forces in the Second World War he holds honorary membership of the Order of the British Empire. For work in connexion with the rescue of Italian art following the floods of 1966 he has the rank of Grand Officer in the Order of the Star of Solidarity of the Italian Republic. ‎Erste Ausgabe. - Das Titelkupfer trägt den Titel `Memoires des Cours d`Italie`. - Casimir Freschot (1640-1720) war ein französischer Historiker, der 1674 nach Italien ging und dort zunächst in Rom und dann in Bologna lebte, wo er dem Benediktinerorden beitrat. Um 1700 zog er nach Utrecht und gab dort die monatlich erscheinenden `Entretiens sur les affaires du temps` heraus. Gegen Ende seines Lebens kehrte er nach Franreich zurück und starb im Benediktinerkloster Luxeuil. - Einband mit kl. Nagespuren auf Rückendeckel und am unt. Kapital, Falz zwischen Titelkupfer und Titelblatt etwas angeplatzt, Titelkupfer und Titelblatt etwas braunrandig, Titelkupfer im oberen Rand knapp beschnitten, einige Seiten im Rand etwas braunfleckig, vord. fl. Vorsatzblatt fehlt, aus fürstlichem Besitz mit altem Stempel auf Titelblatt. Innen sauberes und frisches Exemplar.‎

Die in London gedruckte Karte gibt Distanzen in (russischen) Werst und Meilen an, die Höhnen sind in englischen Feet markiert. Die meisten Texte und Bilder sind von Freshfield und Sella, mitgearbeitet haben aber auch Hermann Woolley, Clinton Dent, Moriz von Déchy und W. F. Donkin. Douglas W(illiam) Freshfield gehört, zusammen mit Gottfried Merzbacher und Moriz von Déchy, zu den wichtigsten Erforschern des Kaukasus. Und die Werke der drei, alle um die Jahrhundertwende entstanden, gehören, der aufwendigen Ausstattung wegen, aber auch weil die Auflagen sehr klein waren, zu den gesuchtesten Raritäten der Alpinismus-Literatur. Aus der Bergbücher-Sammlung von Alfred Kurella, Kulturfunktionär der DDR, der nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zu seiner Rückkehr nach Berlin im Jahr 1954 im Kaukasus lebte. ‎Johann Jakob Frey war Schüler seines Vaters S. Frey (1785-1836). Nachdem er auch bei H. Hess (1799-1850) in Basel studiert hatte, begab er sich nahezu mittellos nach Paris, wo er sich durch Kopieren niederländischer Landschaften des 17. Jahrhunderts weiterbildete und seinen Unterhalt durch Restaurierung älterer Gemälde erwarb. 1834 kehrte er für kurze Zeit nach Basel zurück. Anschließend ging er nach München, wo er die Unterstützung der Schweizer Malerin Emilie Lindner (1797-1860) fand, die es ihm ermöglichte 1835 nach Rom zu gehen. Ende der 1830er Jahre siedelte er mit seinem Freund, dem Genre- und Historienmaler A. Landerer (1816-1893) nach Neapel über, von wo aus er auch Sizilien und Spanien bereiste. Seine Beteiligung an der von R. Lepsius geleiteten preußischen Expedition nach Ägypten 1842 mußte er seiner Gesundheit wegen bald schon aufgeben. Er kehrte im August 1843 aus Alexandrien nach Italien zurück und nahm seinen ständigen Wohnsitz in Rom, wo er eine Römerin heiratete und zu den Gründern des Deutschen Künstlervereins gehörte. Frey war ein bekannter und beliebter Künstler, der in seinem Atelier auch von Fürstlichkeiten besucht wurde, so von Friedrich Wilhelm IV. von Preußen, in dessen Auftrag er eine Folge italienischer Landschaften malte.‎
