GARDENS AND GHETTOS: THE ART OF JEWISH LIFE IN ITALY
Original illustrated blue paper wrappers with intricate silver art piece. 4to. XX, 354 pages; 27 cm. First edition. Catalog of an exhibition organized by the Jewish Museum, New York. Gardens and Ghettos: The Art of Jewish Life in Italy is the title of an exhibition curated by Vivian B. Mann and Emily Braun for The Jewish Museum, New York (September 1989-January 1990) , an exhibition that explores the extraordinarily rich artistic legacy of Italian Jewry. This book, like the exhibition itself, focuses on four time periods: the Empire, the Era of the City States (1300-1550) , the Era of the Ghettos (1550-1750) , and the period since the Risorgimento. Artifacts and architecture are generously represented along with fine arts. Essays by prominent scholars introduce us to the historical and cultural context of a splendid array of works, from ancient Roman architectural fragments and gold glass to illuminated manuscripts and printed books from the Renaissance, baroque ceremonial textiles and silver, and paintings, graphics, and sculpture of the modern era. The many illustrations illuminate the art and life of a minority community in dynamic tension with dominant society and show the vibrant, ongoing contribution by Jews to the arts of Italy. New York Public Library [Joshua Bloch]
HEBREW PRINTING IN NAPLES [IN] BULLETIN OF THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY, ASTOR, LENOX AND TILDEN FOUNDATIONS VOL. 46. NO. 6 JUNE 1942
Original illustrated paper wrappers. 4to. Pages 471-536; 26 cm. Divided into multiple sections. Hebrew Printing in Naples is by leading Jewish bibliographer, and head of the NYPL Jewish Division, Joshua Bloch. Also includes, Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art and Architecture, and Kingston to Newson to Blake. Includes facsimile of a beautiful Hebrew book from Naples. The Jews in Italy, Spain and Portugal were the first to make use of the newly-invented art of Gutenberg for the production of Hebrew books. Hebrew printing presses were set up in various parts of those countries, and produced virtually all known Hebrew books printed during the fifteenth century. Naples, the largest and most beautiful city of Lower Italy, became an early and quite important center of Hebrew printing, second only to Soncino, even as it had become a large center of Jewish life. Though of short duration, the Neapolitan was perhaps the most cosmopolitan Jewish community in the fifteenth century. With the exception of Soncino, none of the cities in Spain, Portugal or Italy can claim the production of as many Hebrew incunabula as were printed in Naples in less than a decade. The periodical was published monthly from 1897-1977. SUBJECT (S) : Bibliography, Periodicals. OCLC lists 22 holdings worldwide. Minimal edgewear. Minimal dampstaining. Toning to pages. Minimal staining and rubbing. Very dusty. Good condition. (AMR-53-13A)

He says that painting is an "elixir for long life", and continues to paint and exhibit as a centenarian
He was on the fringes of the Corrente movement started by his friends and classmates in the 1930s to oppose the Novecento Italiano movement that was influenced by Italian Fascism. He was drafted by the Italian Army in 1939, completing tours of duty that until 1945 interrupted his artwork though still enabling him to attend several exhibitions, including the Mostra degli artisti in armi exhibit at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome
He became involved in the Italian figurative art movement of the mid 1900s. His growing stature as a painter in Italy led to exhibitions at increasingly prestigious events, such as the Venice Biennale and Rome Quadriennale. It ultimately led to Longaretti earning the "Chair of Painting" and becoming the director of the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo in 1953, a position he held until retiring in 1978

Gentile, Panfilo, Falzoni, Giulio
100 OPERE DI GIULIO FALZONI, ESEGUITE NEL CINQUANTENNIO 19151965 [INSCRIBED BY THE ARTIST]
1st Edition. Original Boards with Original Dust Jacket. 4to. (48) , [xxiv] c [i. E. 100] pages ; 35 cm. In Italian. Title translates into English as, 100 Works of Giulio Falzoni, Made in the Fifty Years from 1915 to 1965. Includes 100 reproductions of works by Falzoni with a introduction from Panfilo Gentile. Gentile (1889 - 1971) was an Italian journalist, writer and politician
During the 1960s (at the end of Gentiles career) he produced a succession of increasingly shrill political critiques, such as Polemic against my own times
and Mafia democracy
. Penfilo Gentile's down-beat evaluation was of modern democracies dominated by party machines, incapable of promoting real talent, and programmed to construct, especially in Italy, oligarchic dictatorship masquerading as political pluralism
(His) writing was characterized by Satre as imposter philosophy and Herbert Marcuse called him a livid polemicist. (Wikipedia, 2017) In the introduction, Gentile praises Falzoni, writing, Falzoni is now a successful painter. His success has been fully deserved, as it was obtained merely through the persuasive forcefulness of his art. We may there fore allow ourselves to be for once mildly optimistic
thinking that, all considered, the publics tests is not so utterly perverted or mesmerized as to prevent it from rewarding serious, honest artists
This is a very scarce 1st Italian Edition of Falzonis retrospective with the Gentile introduction. A later more widely distributed edition was published in New York in 1970. OCLC lists no copies worldwide. This copy is inscribed by Falzoni on the front end page to the owner of a New York City Art Gallery. A few tears to the dust jacket along the edges and spine. Overall dust jacket is in about very good condition and the book itself is in very good condition. Rare and Definitive. (ITART-1-19)
