‎EROS IN MOURNING From Homer to Lacan‎

‎Dustjacket has light rubbing. ; Eros in Mourning begins with a reading of the Iliad that shows how Homer, not yet influenced by the ideology of transcendence, analyzes the structure of unassuageable mourning in a way that is as up-to-date as the latest poststructuralism. Then, in readings of Dante, Hamlet, La Princess de Clèves, Heart of Darkness, and Lacan, Staten depicts the "thanato-erotic" hysteria that is set off by the specter of the dead and decomposing body that is also the body of sexual love and which, in the "transcendentalizing" tradition, is more female than male. Yet, St. John, certain troubadours, and Milton offer glimpses of a more affirmative relation to "eros in mourning. " ; 9.5 x 1 x 6.5 Inches; 248 pages‎

‎EMIGRATION FROM ITALY IN THE REPUBLICAN AGE OF ROME‎

‎Ex-library copy with one single institution stamp to title-page and pocket with discard stamp to endpage. Minor fading to spine. ; 208 pages; During the last two centuries of the Roman Republic emigration from Italy to the provinces was widespread and increasing. This book is the first to survey the movement throughout the Empire; the emphasis is on private rather than state-organised settlement. The first part is about the Western Mediterranean provinces, whose Romanization began in this period; the second part treats emigration to the Greek East, where, by contrast, the settlers tended to become more and more hellenized. The principal matters considered are the volume of emigration, the kinds of communities formed overseas by the emigrants, their motives and origins, the regions and places settled, the fortunes of the settlers in the upheavals of the late Republican period, and their relations with the people among whom they lived.‎

‎THE JEWS IN SICILY Volume 2 (1302-1391)‎

‎Unwrapped in Plastic. ; Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae; 1.8 x 9.5 x 6.1 Inches; 576 pages; This volume in the series Documentary History of the Jews in Italy illustrates the history of the Jews in Sicily for most of the fourteenth century. It is the sequel to the first volume on the history of the Jews in Sicily, and illustrates the events of the first century of Aragonese rule over the island. During that period, often unsettled by political upheavals, the Jewish minority flourished economically, but suffered, along with the rest of the population, during civil war and uprisings of the barons. Some thousand documents, many of them published here for the first time, record the fortunes of the Jews and their relationships with the authorities and their Christian neighbours. Much new information has come to light, and many facets of Jewish life in Sicily have been uncovered.‎
