‎<p>Cambridge: Printed by Tho: and John Buck printers to the University of Cambridge 1629. The first King James Bible printed at Cambridge a model of fine editing introducing nearly 500 changes that have become standard. Contemporary red morocco stamped decoratively in gilt with a seven-paneled elaborately gilt-tooled spine and gilt turns-ins. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. . Small folio. Elaborate wood-engraved architectural title-page woodcut headbands initial letters and tail-pieces. Text in double columns. Separate plain title-page for the New Testament. Binding extremities have some slight wear and minor soiling. Gilt is slightly faded. Very minor foxing light browning and the occasional small stain sometimes touching text. Small hole to outer margin of Hhh4 not affecting text. Small hole to lower margin of Rrr6 not affecting text. Former bookseller's ticket on verso of front flyleaf. Contemporary ink inscription on recto of preliminary blank. A very good copy in a remarkable binding in a quarter calf clamshell box. Cambridge began to print the Bible in the Geneva version in 1558 under a charter granted by Henry VIII in 1534. The Cambridge Geneva Bible appeared in 1691. Meanwhile in London Christopher Barker had acquired a virtual monopoly in Bible printing by virtue of his patent as Royal printer granted in 1577. In seeking to break that monopoly Cambridge University Press and the Bucks insisted that they had the means to produce far better edited editions of the Bible in their university town. In 1628 Charles I ratified Henry VIII's charter and this Bible was the first publication produced after that act. It was indeed significantly more accurate than the Barker editions of the King James Bible and it began a Cambridge tradition of care for the text. "Another motive probably contributed to the quality of the Bible issued by Thomas and John Buck printers to the University of Cambridge. Cambridge was making a claim to printing and editorial quality beyond anything their London rivals could produce. Part of this implicit claim was embodied in its conspicuously modern appearance. Roman type by itself was nothing new but the use of u v J and occasionally apostrophes was.The editors made more changes to the text than any other set of editors. By my count counts of this sort always have an element of roughness they introduced 221 readings of which 199 became standard. In terms of frequency this is roughly one new reading every five chapters. They also confirmed a further 59 variants from the first edition found in some of the earlier editions. The spelling of the names is largely but not entirely a scholastic matter. They introduced 178 spellings of which 157 have become standard and they confirmed a further 34. Overall 493 changes were made of which 447 91% became standard." ‎Scarce copy of this original "Coronation Menu". The text is handwritten, and some slight differences can be found in the calligraphy between each of the original menus. The Coronation Day banquet was served by Le Cordon Bleu London to 350 people. At this occasion was created the "Coronation Chicken" recipe ("Poulet Reine Elizabeth"). Remarkable document, both from a historical and gastronomic point of view ! Good copy (small discoloration on the top and very small superficial lack on the side)‎

‎The English garden. Manuscript plan of unnamed garden with bloom calendar table showing the blooming patterns of more than a hundred flowers.‎

‎Place not stated England . 1928. The table or bloom calendar is in a makeshift table ruled out in pencil over 2pp. folio. It is in poor condition heavily-aged divided into two sections along central horizontal fold line and with slight loss to text from chipping. Headed '1928' the table has columns for each month from January to December with the time during which the various flowers are in bloom blocked out for a list of around 115 flowers in chronological order with the earliest blooming first from snowdrops crocuses pansies forget me nots tulips to asters sunflowers phloxes gaillardia Barr's pink japonica grey lady heather shades little boy blue little pink lady. The plan of the unnamed garden is 1p. folio in smilar aged condition to the table with chipping and a long closed tear along the central horizontal fold. Apparently incomplete it is a simple drawing of the layout in pencil with dots in ink presumably indicating places of planting. The names of a few plants are written in pencil: 'cerastium <abyssium> aubrictia arabis'. Beneath the plan in ink: '72 plants on inside edging. 6" apart 60 plants on second edging 8" apart 50 plants on third edging 8" apart 16 plants on outside border 2" apart'. Perhaps a comparison with the current blooming pattern would be constructive global warming. Place not stated [ England ]. 1928. unknown‎

Ali Seref Pasa or Hafix Ali Esref. He was a soldier, who was schooled in Paris as a cartographer around 1862. Already in Paris he published his first atlas with 22 maps, called 'Yeni atlas'. Upon his return to Istanbul he became a chief cartographer at the Maatbaa-i amire Printing Press in Beyazit, which was the successor of the Muteferrika press from 1727. Among others he translated the large Kiepert map of Anatolia to Ottoman. He died in 1907, leaving his large project of a gigantic map of Anatolia in 100 sheets unfinished. Ali's name is often misunderstood or even listed as two different people: Ali Seref Pasa and Hafiz Ali Esref. Until the surname law adopted on June 21, 1934, Turks did not have surnames. They were born with one first name and were until the adulthood described only as sons or daughters of their parent's names. Later they were given titles such as Effendi (Sir), Bey (Chief) or Hanim (Madam) for higher classes, or they were given names according to their work or class. The names were not inherited by children until 1934, when the surname law was enforced. The map maker Ali received names Seref, the honourable, and Pasa, the dignitary. He was also known as Hafiz, the memorizer of Qur'an and Esref, Proud. So Ali Seref Pasa would have a meaning 'Honourable Dignitary Ali, and Hafiz Ali Esref, Memorizer of Qur'an, Proud Ali. Daruttibaa - Matbaa-I Amire Printing Press: The first press in the Muslim world, called Daruttibaa, was founded in Istanbul by Ibrahim Muteferrika in 1727, with a permission of Sultan Ahmeet III. It was located in Muteferrika's house. The first book was published in 1729 and until 1742 sixteen other works followed. After Muteferrika's death, the press was supressed for printing, as printed books were considered dangerous. In 1796 the press was purchased by the government and moved to Uskudar in Istanbul, and in 1831 finally to Beyazit, where it was renamed to Matbaa-i Amire in 1866. The press was closed in 1901 and was reopened in 1908 under the name 'Âmire' In 1927 the name changed to State Printing House. The press still exists and is known for publishing school and educational books. Extremely rare. Not in OCLC.; Not in TBMM Map Collection.‎

An unusual survival the letters of a composer Harold Jervis-Read to his lover illustrating the growth of a relationship and an ability to express his feelings against the backcloth sometimes foreground of his musical activities and his marriage. Total of letters circa 350 three hundred and fifty Autograph Letters 118 one hundred and eighteen apparently complete letters many start and end abruptly dated 432 four hundred and thirty two pages with some APCSs mainly 12mo 1-8pp. each 55 of these letters dated 1933 and 30 dated 1934 1926-1928 comprising one letter only. There are more than 140 undated letters and a similar quantity of apparently incomplete letters no. of pages c.150. Subjects and quotes: 1926 his one night a week flatmate found him unconscious; a lot to do; her birthday; 1928 "can't write about 'intimate things'"; 1927 asking how he should react to something she's written hot or cold etc.; 1929 lost coat; health; illness; suggestion that relationship is on the edge; social life; compliments her "fine"; dinner invitation; "My piece for Oulston went well"; quotes to illustrate attitude to her "If of herself she will not love thee ."; she has obviously complained that he doesn't show enthusiasm recurrent theme; "joy of creation" but not the "joy of human communication"; his human shortcomings; she cannot appreciate the "Marcia Buffa" because of lack of appreciation of satire in her; his company described; leaving flat for good; moving to 29 High Street NW3; his obsession with her perhaps only soluble legally marriage; nature of love and their relationship recurrent theme; movements; reference to Margery - his wife see below; he'd sacrifice all for his children; Margery has no money "I earn at an artistic profession enough for six of them"; £160 per annum private income; he describes "the littleness of her perceptions" on family finances; 6 Oct. 1929 he's been writing a lot - "a violin sonata"; suggests she book a ticket for the Royal Academy of Music where a Recital of some of his work is to be given finishing with his "6tet by professional players"; she shies away; says he'll never write a quartet; busy; "Everything here is called a 'Practice' Concert unless the Principal is personally responsible for it"; Margery wife happy for him to see Brynnie - she's had a lover for more than two years "a rich doctor"; 25 Nov. 1929 "The Concert was a good success" Malvern; literary reference recurrent - part of his not being comfortable writing about emotions. ‎1830. 4to 21.5 x 27 cm. Contemporary navy blue morocco with the title lettered in gold on spine marbled endpapers. With 2 folding tables 17 lines to the page written in red and black ink. A unique handwritten vocabulary and phrasebook of English and Arabic from the first half of the 19th century. This meticulously prepared manuscript is written in the fashion of a printed book opening with a title page and ending with an index of topics. It is divided into four main sections: nouns adjectives verbs and example sentences. The vocabulary especially in the nouns section is arranged by subjects which include such interesting headings as "Druggist" "Painter" "Merchant" "Cities" "the Bride's Paraphernalia" "Precious Jewels" "War" "The Church" "Clerical Vestments" "Ecclesiastical Degrees & Kinds of Sin" "Festivals" and "Monks their prayers and their dress". Presumably the dictionary was created to help a traveller or merchant who may have had an association with the Church. The final section offers an interesting selection of phrases and sheds some light on the experience of foreign language learning in the early 19th century. The phrases are a mixture of sentences that would be useful in daily life and such as would be included to practice the words from the vocabulary. Examples include: "We roasted a lamb and ate the whole of it and drank wine with it"; "I descended from above with the youth my enemy"; "I shot the bear in the water and he sank"; and "Why dost thou scratch thy head and spit in fire". As a cheat sheet for Arabic grammar the author includes two folding tables of Arabic verb tenses and conjugations. Overall a curious example of a 19th-century Arabic vocabulary and phrasebook.With a presentation note in English indicating it was a Christmas gift in 1881 presented by G. W. Bernard Esq.
