No publisher stated revised and corrected edition 1905. Cloth gilt cover title 4to 27 cm. viii 203 pp 16 leaves of plates. From the introduction: "The Church History Exhibition held at St. Albans was intended to illustrate the History of the Church of England before and since the Reformation from the earliest times to the present day. With this object in view the Committee set themselves to gather together a selection of manuscripts books charters plans proclamations Acts of Parliament portraits views church-furniture vestments ornaments and plate and the result of their labours was an exhibition of great interest and of much educational value. Among the earlier exhibits may be mentioned the plan of the 4th Century Church at Silchester Hants the 8th or 9th Century Book of the Gospels from Hereford the 10th Century MS. of Bede on the Apocalypse from Lambeth William the Conqueror's Charter to Ramsey Abbey 12th Century Paten and Episcopal Ornaments from Chichester the Bishop of Truro's Mass-book of the 12th and 15th Centuries partly of the York Use the great MS. Bible written and illustrated at Winchester in the 12th Century the Hereford Breviary of the I3th Century the Sarum Breviary of the 14th Century from Lambeth Mr. Huth's MS. Missal of the 14th or 15th Century portions of a 14th Century Cope from Steeple Aston some 15th Century Panels of Alabaster MSS. of a Portiforium an Antiphonar a Grail a Processional and a Book of Hours - all of the 15th Century and all according to the use of Sarum - a MS. York Missal an Obituary Roll of an Abbot in Norfolk about 1450 a Herse Cloth or Funeral Pall 15th Century a sumptuously bound and illuminated Indenture dated 1504 concerning the Obit. of King Henry VII. in the Lady Chapel at Westminster a Pyx Cloth from Suffolk and the Dunstable Herse cloth. The Collection of Church Plate which was one of the features of the Exhibition included some earlv examples of Chalices and Patens found in the graves of Bishops and Clergy in various parts of England. It is not possible to call particular attention to any of the very large number of printed books which were exhibited but the cases full of Service books Primers &c were deeply interesting and Lord Crawford's collection of Proclamations and a collection of all the most important Acts of Parliament bearing on the Reformation added much to the educational value of the Exhibition. The wonderful series of Prayer Books from Edward VI. to Edward VII. and the collection of various translations of the Bible into English are catalogued apart from other MSS. and printed books." The section on bibles items 563-597 on pages 146-158 is entirely devoted to pre-1700 Bibles including one later facsimile with notes providing brief descriptions and putting each Bible in context. This kawaraban features comparative vocabulary lists showcasing Japanese alongside three foreign languages: American English Russian and British English. Accompanying each list is a small portrait of a "typical" man from each country with the respective capital noted. For instance an American soldier is depicted holding a gun with Washington identified as the capital while a Russian officer holding a sword is paired with St. Petersburg transcribed as Petoruku in Japanese.<br><br>The vocabulary lists are challenging to interpret suggesting that some entries might be fabricated or inaccurately represented. However the American section includes a few recognisable words such as "silver" and "coin" transcribed phonetically into Japanese offering a glimpse of early efforts at linguistic comparison and cross-cultural representation. . unknown

[The Old Poor Law; English Poor Laws; eighteenth-century poor relief]:
The Old Poor Law in the late Nineteenth Century. Anonymous Manuscript Document calling in forthright terms for the amending of 'The Plan of the Poor Laws of England' to weed out 'the loose Profligate and those who do not like work'.
Without place or date. English late eighteenth century. 2pp foolscap 8vo. On the rectos of the leaves of a bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. On laid paper with indistinct watermark. The context of the document with the capitalisation and spelling 'mechanick' 'shou'd' 'Publick' 'tyed down' 'lookt' 'Profitt' points to a late eighteenth-century origin certainly before the Speenhamland System and Michael Nolan's 1805 'Treatise of the Laws for the Relief and Settlement of the Poor'. No title or heading. A forthright document whose rhetorical tone suggests that it was intended for public delivery. The author asserts that '3 fourths of the People now upon the poor List are such poor as shou'd not be relieved Namely the loose Profligate and those who do not like work. If this is the Case the public loose sic near another Million by relieving so many who shou'd work'. The cost of poor relief he claims all 'falls upon the Landed Interest'. He does not however 'Wish that our Poor Laws were all abolish'd as amended that ever Man shou'd have a Liberty of living where he please'd which would be always where he could get a living best.' The document begins: 'The Plan of the Poor Laws of England tho Calculated upon the Principles of Humanity and Charity are far from answering the Salutary purposes intended. For tho the Lame the Blind the Impotent and Aged are amply provided for and I might add the Drones and those who do not chose to work. Yet the Poor Labourer the little Farmer and the Mechanick are under great Restraints and Difficulties on Account of their Settlement being tyed down to a particular Parish where they find it very difficult to get their living and yet oftentimes cant get a Certificate to remove to another Parish where there is great Probability they may Have Work enough and live better.' The author expands on his view with reference to 'a poor Man who is not of ability to Rent 10£ P Ann' 'the Industrious who mean to Maintain Themselves by Labour' and 'the Interest of the Landed Man'. He notes the 'hardship' that 'lies upon the Man of Ability to Rent 10£ a Year' who 'removes from the Place of his Settlement and Rents 8 or 9 A Year in another Parish. He is there lookt upon as a sort of a Charge to that Parish as they cant Tax him to the Parish Rates without makeing him a Settlement and therfore oftentimes procure him to be removed'. Elsewhere he asks: 'Do not we now and then see a Shop keeper in a Country Village who is daily pillaging the Poor by selling his Good to them in very small Quantities at 50 P Cent Profitt during the Time of the Execution of that Office turn Advocate for the poor and plead for an Increase of their Allowance and this I don't wonder at as the more he can get Allowed them the more Profitt comes To his Till'. Towards the end he states: 'We all know that the Poor only live from Hand to Mouth that when Corn is at the Dearest they make a Shift to live and when it is Cheapest they save nothing at the Weeks End if it is very low they will perhaps work only 4 Days out of 6. they have no Idea of laying any thing by and I fear what Incourages them in their way of Thinking is the certainty they have of themselves and Family being maintained at the Expence of the Parish when Sickness or old Age comes on'. He states: 'I Believe there is no Nation in the World have got a poor Law but England and I will venture to Assert that there is no Nation where Charity and Benevolence more abound'. He ends with the proposal 'That one publick Workhouse Infirmary and House of Maintainance should be Erected in the Center of Every County where all the Sick Lame and Aged should be sent whenever they can't take Care of themselves to be there maintained taken Care of & set to work as their Particular Circumstances require.' An apparently unrecorded playbill advertising a staging at the English Opera House of William Moncrieff's 1794-1857 popular Monsieur Tonson a two-act farce first performed in 1821 with Mary Anne Goward 1805-1899 in the lead female role. In 1829 Goward married actor Robert Keeley 1793-1869 who also appears on the present bill as part of a 'new musical farce' Before Breakfast! Two further comic pieces were a part of the night's proceedings the performances interspersed with the overtures to Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte and Figaro. . Dimensions 215 x 350 mm. S. G. Complete in six volumes without the posthumously published Apocrypha. Elephant Folio 19' x 15.5' and . Full red morocco covers with gilt rolled Greek meander borders spines with double raised bands gilt in seven compartments all edges gilt gilt dentelle marbled endpapers. Sturdy bindings are remarkably solid despite the demands of these heavy textblocks. Very Good ex-libris from the John Wilson Collection of Multnomah County Library with small bookplates on paste downs a few penciled notes to versos of title pages but otherwise unmarked. Wide margins. Bindings scuffed and soiled rubbed along joints wear at heads and tails. Contents generally bright with typical offsetting from engravings; many tissue guards still present. Handwritten 2pp. 1889 note from London bookseller Henry Sotheran tipped-in to Vol. 1 wherein he apologizes for the lack of The Apocrypha which was published in 1816. Exhaustively illustrated throughout with engravings including 70 full-page copperplates after Benjamin West Angelica Kauffman Henry Fuseli William Artaud Joshua Reynolds Philip James de Loutherbourg and others. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original brown half-leather bdg. with a clip. "Poesie" title on black cloth front cover. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic script). [2], 153, [3] p. Completely handwritten with numerous pages. All edges gilt. This unique manuscript is probably an early sketch written in Ottoman script to be used later for its first edition published by Maarif Vekâleti [i.e. Turkish Ministry of Education] in 1947 in modern Turkish with Latin letters. The Mysterious Universe is a popular science book by the British astrophysicist Sir James Jeans, first published in 1930 by the Cambridge University Press. In the United States, it was published by Macmillan. The book is an expanded version of the Red Lecture delivered at the University of Cambridge in 1930. It begins with a full-page citation of the famous passage in Plato's Republic, Book VII, laying out the allegory of the cave. The book made frequent reference to the quantum theory of radiation, initiated by Max Planck in 1900, to Albert Einstein's general relativity, and to the new theories of quantum mechanics by Heisenberg and Schrödinger, of whose philosophical perplexities the author seemed well aware. The book was denounced by the Cambridge philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, because "Jeans has written a book called The Mysterious Universe and I loathe it and call it misleading. Take the title... I might say that the title The Mysterious Universe includes a kind of idol worship, the idol being Science and the Scientist." A second edition appeared in 1931. The book was reprinted 15 times between 1930 and 1938 and again in September 2007. Salih Murat Uzdilek (1891-1967) was the first to translate this book into Turkish, printed in 1947 under the title "Esrarli kâinât". Although there's no sign in this manuscript, probably the author is Uzdilek. He was a Professor of Physics at Istanbul Technical University, graduated as a naval officer in 1908. It was his father Mehmed Sefik Bey, who as a mathematics teacher introduced him to the study of the subject. Salih Murat developed an interest in the history of mathematics through readings of books by F. Cajori and D. E. Smith. Uzdilek studied engineering in London prior to the First World War, where he was invited to present a communication on the "Introduction of logarithms into Turkey" at the Napier Tercentenary organized by The Royal Society of Edinburgh, 25-27 July 1914. The paper published in the Napier Tercentenary Memorial Volume (1915) was based on the research by Salih Zeki Bey, historian of science and Rector of Istanbul University between 1913 and 1917, published in his Kamus-i Riyaziyat (Encyclopaedia of Mathematics 1898). His findings indicate that Yirmisekiz Mehmet Çelebi, the Sultan's envoy to France, had been presented an astronomical text which included logarithms by the astronomer Jacques Cassini during his visit to the Paris Observatory in 1714. It was this collection that led to the introduction of logarithms into Turkey. Kalfazade Ismail Efendi, a timekeeper, and mathematician compiled an introduction to logarithms for his translation of the astronomical tables of J. Cassini in 1772, which is considered the first work on logarithms, into Turkish. Gelenbevi Ismail Efendi, renowned for his works in mathematics and logic, completed his Logaritma Serhi (Commentary on Logarithms) in 1787. After his return to Istanbul, Salih Murat Uzdilek was invited by the Austrian Dean of the School of Engineering, Prof. Philipp Forchheimer, to give physics lessons at the school. Prof. Uzdilek pursued his interest in the history of mathematics and physics throughout his long career. He was also an active researcher in the physics of sound and music and contributed to the contemporary tonal system of Turkish music. In his later years, Prof. Uzdilek was invited to lecture at the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei.

Tsingtao Qingdao during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945. Ten long Autograph Letters Signed from Malcolm H. Young English agent to his sister Celia describing conditions during Japanese occupation.
Three from 1937 18 January 28 November and 10 December; seven from 1938 13 20 and 27 February 6 March 7 April 6 May and 13 November. All addressed from ‘P.O. Box 286. Tsingtao. China / via Siberia’. A good well-written correspondence painting a good picture of the day-to-day life of an English expatriate in the occupied city. Letters are signed ‘Malcolm’ and once ‘Mac’. Young names himself in valedictions as Celia’s brother. He does not sign with his surname which can however be deduced from the combination of postscripts signed ‘M H Y’; and Celia being named in the endorsement to one letter as ‘C. G. Young’. He is is presumably ‘Malcolm H. Young agent’ who features in the Tsingtao / Hong Kong List for 1941. Several references indicate a conventionally Christian religiosity and some connection with a church for English expatriates in the city. Ten long letters. Three from 1937 18 January 28 November and 10 December; seven from 1938 13 20 and 27 February 6 March 7 April 6 May and 13 November. A total of 30pp 4to neatly and closely written. A little aged and worn but in good overall condition. Two of the letters are incomplete; that of 10 December 1937 only consists of the first page; that of 13 November 1938 lacks the fourth page of five. The correspondence contains a deal of personal matter but the extracts that follow concentrate on the political situation on the ground. Letter One 18 January 1937 puts us straight in the action: ‘I think I last wrote to you on Sunday before last just before the Japanese came in. This took place on the Monday without incident or conflict of any kind - no one killed or injured & no shot fired. It was a tense time however all the forenoon as it was not known what would happen. From early morning Airplanes were flying all over quite low & making an noise. It was alarming but they were only making quite sure that there were no soldiers here. They dropped a few bombs in the outskirts to frighten people - & where they thought there might be soldiers - but no harm was done. / It was a day of deliverance & thankfulness when in the afternoon they marched in quietly & took possession.’ He refers to ‘many unpleasantnesses’ as ‘a new City Govt: is inaugurated - this took place yesterday just a week after the troops came in - we are glad to have the war cloud removed - that is we hope it will be - Shops have been kept close shut & the poor Chinese much frightened by their rough treatment & seizure of houses goods & people. However they also gave employment to many coolies. Even the houses of Foreigners were not exempt from intrusion but on the whole as invading armies go they have not been too bad.’ This brings us to the end of the first of the thirty pages of text. He continues the first letter with more news of the state of affairs including: ‘We had a lot of the soldiers encamped just below here in empty summer bungalows some of whom were a nuisance & our servants were alarmed; - they even intruded on ours and our neighbours premises but did no harm: and on our complaining to the Consel who took prompt action with the Japanese Military Head Quarters were soon checked. This crowd has moved on elsewhere now & I hope we shall have no more.’ He reports that ‘The Censors . are at work here in the P.O. making delay in delivery of mails’. In the second letter November 28 1937 he reports: ‘The Japanese are advancing in the N. of the province but rather hesitantly - I suppose negotiations are going on. They have huge commercial interests in Shantung - especially at Tringtao which it is to their interest to preserve. The Chinese may be using these to bargain with the enemy at our gates. It is hard to know what is happening. Meanwhile Shai is suffering terrible aftermath of war with its hungry crowds of refugees poorly clad & with sickness among them; & still the Japanese advance & Nanking is threatened is threatened.’ He has every sympathy for ‘the Chinese who have fought so bravely’ but believes it is time to make peace ‘since they cannot hope to win in the unequal struggle. Japan’s better trained & equipped armies carrying all before them. Locally the tension increases & the price of food & coal increases. The railway being if not actually interrupted so denuded of cars removed South by the Govt. that no coal trains can come from the mines.’ On 13 February 1938 he reports on ‘Work on clearing the port - blocked by departing Chinese troops with sunken ships & other obstructions - . while the demolition of buildings - destroyed by the Chinese - is progressing preparatory to re-building later. Whatever happens the Japanese are going to keep Tsingtao so the only thing is to make the best of things & as far as possible work with them - this for Chinese & Foreigners alike . I fear that the Chinese will be afraid to open up their shops much. The Japanese are opening & numbers of them returning by every steamer from Japan & Dairen. Commodities too are showing cheaper prices. Water is very short but work is in hand for repairs & they say that after 10 days there will be improvement.’ On 6 March 1938: ‘As you surmise it is still far from plain sailing both for ourselves and the original inhabitants of these regions the Chinese. The power & authority of the new masters is everywhere felt and we as well as the Chinese have to mind our Ps & Qs with them. The name and authority of the Occidental powers is not what it was - & they like to let us know it. . The Railway is not yet working fully & the harbour is still closed’. On 6 May 1938 he bemoans ‘the present disturbed state of the country which alas shows no signs of improvement. - But what would you - if the incomers win peace & order follow but naturally the people of the land oppose them in all ways with resulting chaos & danger to all. It is very sad. & fighting with heavy losses on both sides continues. . all along the Railways we are told villages on both sides have been burned down. Business of all kinds is very little except among the Japanese who appear to be very busy & are re-building their factories & doing other business - giving employment it is true to some workmen but as they are self-sufficient & very efficient they have no use for Foreign help. Chinese with money have largely departed elsehwere & those remaining will not do anything this year. - The new regime have installed a very good & quick Bus service which gives rapid & convenient transportation to & fro town’. In the last letter 13 November 1938 he complains that ‘The days are short now & “Tokyo†time is tiresome but we adjust things to some extent by altering times. For instance Early Service Holy Communion is put at 8.30 instead of 8 which helps. We were glad to be there this morning & the church room was warmed by a welcome stove fire The first time it has been required this season. There were not so many present . On Friday 11th. we went out to the British. Cemetery here at the Cenotaph the usual memorial service was held. It as a bitter day. A detachment from H.M.S. “Folkestone†now in port were present many of the men being war veterans. Signed archive of rare United States Government circulars enclosures and supplements
1888. hardcover. These documents are dated from 1884 to 1892. Several are signed in type by Robert Todd Lincoln American Ambassador to the United Kingdom Department of State. 13.25 x 8.25-inch slim folio-sized volume bound with marble boards and leather 20 pages with the addition of an important typed letter signed by Benjamin F. Butler investigating a mass inheritance fraud perpetrated on the citizens of America by con artists in the United Kingdom. During this period American citizens would be notified that they were heirs to a large unclaimed English Estate or perhaps a large sum of money held in the Bank of England. To receive their inheritance they were told that certain legal fees and real estate transfer taxes would have to be paid to agents of the British Government. Another variation of the scheme involved American con artists placing advertisements in newspapers calling themselves "European claim agencies" and charging Americans exorbitant fees for investigating the ownership of non-existing estates. Lincoln is flustered because the American Legation in London is receiving hundreds of letters from American citizens who were swindled and yet little was being done in the United States to educate its citizens to the magnitude of the fraud. Mr. Lincoln to Mr. Blaine extract March 3 1891 ".since March 4 1889 one hundred and ninety 190 letters have been received at this Legation alleging the writers claims to large estates in England or to fantastic sums of money 'in chancery' or 'in the Bank of England' none of them containing an element of probability." In conclusion is a typed letter signed by former Union General Benjamin F. Butler 1 page on law office letterhead Boston November 14 1888 whereby he brings to light the vast magnitude of the con in part: ".I have now been more than 45 years in the practice of a legal profession more or less extensively. I have heard of more than 4500--I hope I do not exaggerate--cases of large estates in England awaiting American heirs and I have been consulted in a very great many and early in life looked into such matters; but I have not for the last 25 years at all because I never have heard of one dollar coming from England to any American heir on account of such estates. In the first place it is a legal impossibility unless the heirs are British subjects.all those I have ever known about are swindles." "This Letter is an attack on John Woodward, Professor of Physic at Gresham College, who repeatedly came into conflict, on scientific subjects, with members of Tory circles. It is the only one of the pieces printed in Wagstaffe's 'Miscellaneous Works', 1725, of which the authorship is undisputed." - Rothschild. ***** Some of Dr. Wagstaffe's writings have such literary merit, that Charles Wentworth Dilke conjectures that this work was written by Swift, whilst Sir Henry Craik in his 'Life of Swift' said the hypothesis was almost irresistible. Wagstaffe was a physician at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, whether he was also an original satirist influenced by Swift is open to question, but he certainly must have met him quite frequently at the house of his father-in-law, Charles Bernard. Both on letterheads of 'The Year's Art' 34 35 36 Paternoster Row London. 31 October 1916 and September 1917. Each 1p. 12mo. Both in good condition on lightly-aged paper. Both carry the stamp and manuscript mark of the Royal Society of Arts. Convincing facsimiles of signed autograph letters. The first reads: 'In the third year of war my publishers and myself are determined to carry on "The Year's Art" without a break. Will you therefore be good enough to amend the enclosed extract describing the institution in your charge with especial reference to changed conditions. Please notify also names with dates of death of any of your members or staff dying at home or abroad. Your early reply will be much valued.' The second letter adapts the contents of the first beginning: 'Notwithstanding enhanced cost and increased difficulties my publishers have agreed not to discontinue "The Year's Art" in this fourth year of war.'
