n.p. n.d. but Japan 1859. An interesting and instructive look at how the Japanese learned English in the generation following Admiral Perry's opening of Japan. 2 volumes in 1 oblong fukurotoji 5.5" x 8" approx. 198 french-fold pages sewn in the Japanese manner in contemporary and almost certainly original brown paper wrappers; minor working and wear but in all a very good and striking example of a Japanese student's workbook for the attainment of English. The book has apparently been copied from American primers published by A. S. Barnes in New York in 1857 and Sargent's School Primer Boston 1859; both contain a variety of reading and spelling lessons "especially adapted to the capacity and taste of young children. It is hoped that it will proved sic valuable introduction to the national series of school readers prepared by Richard G. Parker." Both Parker's and Sargent's primers were available in bi-lingual editions in the Japanese market. Might this be the manuscript from which a printer might have used to publish the Japanese editions Throughout the English text which has been carefully written in ink is often translated interlineally in red ink with Japanese characters creating an attractive visual appearance on the page. Included are 3 pages of alphabets simple sentences often in rhyme "A cart for me / to ride and see / A ship at sea / with you and me. unknown

First edition, small 8vo (131 x 81 mm), [24], 112, 117-172pp., (i.e. 168pp., as 113-16 omitted in the pagination), mounted woodcut frontispiece of a male archer, early ownership signature to title partially erased, upper corner of D1 restored with a loss of a few letters which have been added in ms. blank lower corner of M3 repaired, occasional light soiling and staining, marbled endpapers, eighteenth-century green morocco, tooled in gilt, overall a very good copy. Written when he was sixty-six years old, this is probably the last book which Markham wrote, and is one of his scarcest. "The practical instruction which he proceeds to give to the would-be-archer, of the bow and its use, the shooting-glove, the string, the shaft, the steel of the arrow, the feather, and the arrow-head, is reminiscent of Asham and may indeed be derived from his Toxophilus."?Poynter. Only two other copies have appeared at auction over the last 70 years, the Macclesfield copy sold by Sotheby's 14th April 2005 lot 1311 ?6,600 and the Fox Pointe copy sold by Forum Auctions 10th July 2019 lot 104 ?5000. A substantial missionary cookbook with 654 recipes many attributed. An additional 120 recipes appear in this second edition. Includes interesting short sections on cereals fruits and vegetables available in Rangoon markets and a practical nutrition guide titled "How Shall We Feed Our Babies" The recipes are a mixture of American dishes with a good number of global dishes including some from Armenia China quite a few Holland India again quite a few Indonesia Japan Italy Turkey and more; a far more international collection that one expects in a missionary cookbook. Dishes indicated as Burmese include Balachaung Buffadoo Duck Candied Pumpkin Chicken Kaukswe Cocoanut Blancmange Dohl Dohl Lthoke Fish Hilsa Curry Mok-si-kyo Nga-boung-doke Sa-nwin-ma-kin Seaweed Kyauk-Kyaw and more. The Chairwoman of the cookbook's Editorial Committee Mary Brewster Hollander calls out a few special contributors to the book including Allen Bloodworth of Mason Texas - then living in Burma who supplies his recipe for Texas Barbecue and the local Daw Thei Chone the "white-haired Burmese gentlewoman who could at once describe every step and ingredient of her unique preserved ginger. She's famous all over Burma for her wonderful ginger." The Chairwoman also indicates that all profits from the book "will be used for Community Service Projects." The advertisements imply Rangoon was quite a developed city at the time of publication. Previous owner's small name sticker to front and rear paste-downs; very light soiling internally. Previous owner's bookplate to front paste-down. In black and red printed textured cloth with an illustration of a Burmese woman cooking with a wok. Near very good. Scarce. A complete run of thirty-three weekly numbers, edited and largely written by Thomas Middleton, published October 1792 - May 1793, bound up with an additional half-title, general title, dedication leaf and table of contents. Middleton was Coleridge's protector and mentor at Christ's Hospital and later at Jesus College, Cambridge.

Three letters 1795 1795 and 1809 totalling approximately eleven pages; the larger two letters measuring approximately 7 ¾ x 12 ¼ inches and the smaller 1809 approximately 7 ¾ x 9 ½ inches. 1809 letter Near Fine; earlier letters having some damage especially at folds and margins intersecting with text very good plus. Overall excellent. Three letters from English immigrants to the United States sent to their cousin “Miss Gifford†in Duffield Derbyshire. The earliest letter from A. Bakewell describes a stroll along the Battery and compares the classes of people in the two countries:<br /> <br /> “My son Jon’s favorite walk as well as mine is the battery it is a delightful it commands a very fine view of all the ships that come up to this harbour the opposite shores of Long Island Governors Island & Staten Island which are very fertile one very small Island in the water with a number of small boats & barges which are generally sailing is extremely pleasant the Idea that sometime or other I may see the ship arrive which will contain my beloved Husband renders it peculiarly interesting to me . the more I see of this country the more I like it; the lower classes of people are much better informed & from the high price of wages enabled to live more comfortably than in England it is very uncommon to see a beggar here: one very great inconvenience is the badness of servants they are ten thousand times worse than in England . I could get some that is decent here the manner of the ladies here is much more vulgar than the women in England & they were generally very ignorant there are however some exceptions .†February 1795<br /> <br /> The writer’s husband is William Bakewell who writes to Miss Gifford in 1809 from what is probably Tolland Connecticut which he renders as “Tolland Ford†reporting on the state of the economy and the 1807 Embargo Act:<br /> <br /> “I fear the intercourse between this country & England will be stopped for a time . during the continuation of this Embargo which has caused a total stagnation of business . I have since seen Mr Kinder a friend of my Brother’s & who for some time his home being in the country boarded with my Brother’s family in New York. He assures me that with respect to everything he observed there was as much economy as ever compatible with decency & that their table in particular was furnished in a more frugal stile than that of any Merchants he was acquainted with. . I hope to hear from you as frequently as is practicable while the communication is between the two countries for this government will I expect pass a law to stop the intercourse with both England & France until they cease to capture American vessels. . My son Thomas is gone to NYK to wind up his adventure to New Orleans. He had 5000 dollars in silver with him. In the present uncertain state of mercantile affairs it is doubtful whether Mr Kinder will like to make any further adventure.†January 1809<br /> <br /> Lastly a 1796 letter from another cousin a sister of “A.†opens by relating her arrival to New York City during an outbreak of yellow fever:<br /> <br /> “the worst of all was as soon as we missing land which we had so often wish’d to see the Pilot came on Board & told us of the fever being so bad at N York & that every Body that could had left it. I did not know in what situation I should find my Brother & his family or whether I should find them at all but when we came to Anchor a Boy came on board & told us my Brother was at Philadelphia . my sister & Thomas was at long Island just missing the East river. . we staid a fortnight at the enormous expence of 30 Dollars a week for our family we then came to New York the sickness being rather abated we could not get a House or part of one on long Island they being all engag’d at very high prices to people who had fled from New York & for miles round there was not a room to be had. We had thought of going to Albany but there was so many people gone with goods that we suposed the Market was full my Brother was not return’d we at last took this House at a very great rent till May it being a very Healthy situation we came here the following week & have been here ever since.â€<br /> <br /> The yellow fever epidemic hit New York City in 1795 and surged several times prompting the city to finally create a Board of Health in 1805. This is not the author’s only complaint about New York as compared to England:<br /> <br /> “the Country what I have seen of it is not so pleasant as England there being no hedges all posts & rail fences appears strange to us there are a many very good houses 1 2 & 3 miles round this city which are very pleasant they are built of wood & painted white which looks very pretty & might be made delightful if the inhabitants had any taste for gardening but that the Americans & Dutch have no notion of I could be very comfortable at New York if we was in a way of getting a good deal but we have been spending a great deal and getting but little indeed we have sold most of our goods but the scarcety of cash occation’d by the Fall trade being spoilt with the Fever oblig’d every body to take Bills at a longer date than is usual so that we have rec’d very little there is a vast many English here I have met with some very agreeable acquaintances which I shall be sorry to leave .†March 1796<br /> <br /> She also comments that “there is many Blacks here some of the Merchants keep 8 or 10 of them & I believe they are the best servantsâ€. Though New York City had been home to a large community of freed African Americans following the British Army’s 1779 Philipsburg Proclamation most of them had been resettled in Nova Scotia after the Revolutionary War. The author was more likely observing enslaved people as New York did not pass its gradual abolition law until 1799 and emancipation was not completed until 1827.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of immigration to early republic New York City. unknown

Nineteenth-century agricultural poetry. Fair copy manuscript of anonymous American poem titled 'Elegy on the death of a Farm Laborer.' With emendations and additions in pencil.
Without place or date. 1840s. 10pp. 8vo. On five leaves torn from a notebook. In fair condition on aged and lightly-worn paper. A creditable effort showing the influence of Gray's 'Elegy' and Goldsmith's 'Deserted Village' describing the unnamed farm hand's funeral and reflecting on the virtues and hardships of the poor. Begins: 'From yonder peaceful and secluded dell Snug in the bosom of th'encircling hills The perfumed Zephyr bears a passing knell And melancholy o'er the Soul distils. It tells us hoary Time's unswerving flight Has snapped the thread of Life's uncertain span; And that grim Death with his relentless might Has swung his sickle through th'abode of man.' Care has been taken in the revision of the text with emendations including several passages deleted and replaced. The poem ends abruptly on the tenth page suggesting that it is not complete: 'Then comes the happy and eventful day When scarce-used clothes once more are brought to view'. Without place or date. Beirut: Palestine National Liberation Movement 1971. 42 x 29 cm. Folded. Numerous black-and-white photographic illustrations. Rare and remarkable periodical published by the Palestine National Liberation Movement or Fatah. This was a revolutionary group and later a political party founded in 1957 by Yasser Arafat 1929-2004 Khalil al-Wazir 1935-1988 and 3 or 4 others. The movement published numerous periodicals and pamphlets between 1968-1972 but Fateh is the most important one. Originally published in Arabic it was also issued in English from 1969 bi-weekly in French from 1970 monthly and in Italian from 1971 bi-weekly. We have not been able to find any other English issues of this periodical for sale anywhere else.The name of the group Fatah is an acronym in reverse for "Harakat al-Tahrir al-Watani al-Filastini" the Arabic translation of "Palestine National Liberation Movement". The intention of the founders was to create an organisation that was independent of governments and political parties with the goal to liberate Palestine through low-intensity guerilla warfare. It was part of several armed fights with Israeli and Jordan forces during the 1960s and 70s. Fatah modelled itself after the revolutionary groups of Algeria Vietnam and Cuba. On page 9 of the present issue of Fateh a large photo has been printed of a group of protesters holding signs with the images of the leaders of these revolutions which is a clear message to the reader.The present issue of Fateh contains numerous articles with news from or about Palestine and the movement. It was printed a few months after Black September the bloody clash between Fatah and the Jordanian army in 1970 during which thousands of Palestines were either killed or expelled from Jordan. The first few pages of the periodical are dedicated to this event and other clashes between the two groups that resulted from it. Other articles discuss a 10-hour battle near Tel Aviv the relationship between America and Israel and injustices against Palestinians. Of particular interest are the three powerful full-page illustrations. They were designed in 1970 and issued separately as posters. The first image of a rifle with an olive branch was designed by Natheer Naba'a who is only known for his posters for Fateh. The second image called "stolen smile" shows a photo of a group of determined children and was designed by Jassem el Zubeidy who is only known for this design. The last image is an illustration of a Palestinian woman with a moving text about Palestine designed by Palestinian artist Kamal Boullata 1942-2019.The periodical is somewhat browned and inkstained and the edges are slightly frayed. Printed letterpress by Andrew Miller-Brown at the Janus Press in black red and brown in Palatino and Gill Sans. The text and glosses are in Latin Old English and English. Bound as issued sewn longstitch into Gray Flax Canal from Papeterie Saint Armand and housed in a shellacked wooden slipcase. A fine copy. <br /> <br /> Aelfric's Colloquy was written in England around the year 1000 to teach novice monks conversational Latin. Unusual among instructive texts it takes the form of a dialogue between tradespeople and laborers about whose work is the most important each highlighting their trade's necessity and often bemoaning its difficulties. Amidst this dialogue there is discussion outlining the way in which there is coordination between trades to form a functioning social structure—teaching Latin and civics simultaneously. In this regard the colloquy offers important insight into Anglo-Saxon society. The new translation by W.R. Johnson is arranged between the original Latin and an early Old English gloss presenting the text line by line in three languages. Miller-Brown has composed the book so that the dialog takes place across each page spread question and answer from left to right a quality that makes each spread varied and visually engaging. <br /> <br /> It was announced in March 2012 that Aelfric's Colloquy was one of two runners-up for the thirteenth Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design. One judge of the competition Bryce Milligan of Wings Press said "Obviously a work in homage to a beloved text Aelfric's Colloquy reflects the age and culture of Aelfric in its external design the texture and color of the cover recalling rough woolen monk’s robes and the handmade box feeling very much like the consciously un-ornate wooden book covers of a monastic library's most used texts. Both lend gravity to what some today might consider a slight text but which really has a long and important legacy. The typography and layout echo the unusually spacious original manuscript and its tri-lingual text is an expansion of the interlinear glosses of the original. Finally the occasional and judicious use of color adds just the right amount of almost inexplicable levity similar to that which one finds peeking through Aelfric's text. Plowboy Press unknown

Full brown goatskin binding gilt ruling on covers gilt ruling lettering & rosette decorations on spine marbled endpapers occasional light creasing to corners thumbing & faint soiling to fore-edges of a few leaves occasional spotting still a VG copy. First edition second London issue and perhaps the earliest obtainable issue of this pioneering work of English Romanticism as well as the first major literary undertaking of these English poets. The first issue printed in Bristol by Biggs & Cottle to whom Wordsworth had sold the copyright for 30 guineas reached 500 copies and thereupon sold the entire edition to J. & A. Arch who inserted their own title bearing their imprint and this one features Coleridge’s poem “The Nightingale†after “Lewti†was dropped. This copy does bear the “Off†not handcorrected to “Oft†on p. 19 “woods†and “thought†complete on lines 14 & 16 of p. 204 rather than later corrected to wood and without final comma after thought. The two young poets and French Revolution sympathizers had parked themselves in the secluded village of Holfond Somerset avoiding scrutiny in London & Bristol of English authorities and along with Wordsworth’s sister Dorothy and John Thelwall developed a distinctive new artistic vision which influenced future generations. Their intent was to write poetry reflecting seriously on the lives of humble rustic people and in a style of language imitating everyday speech so the verse was less artificial and formulaic of traditional poetry. This first appearance of “The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere†explores faith guilt cruelty obsession and endurance of a mariner stranded alone upon a ghost ship afflicted with supernatural forces after killing an albatross and explores the sacredness of nature.
