19th CENTURY ENGLISH COMMONPLACE BOOK BELONGING TO THE BIRD FAMILY
England probably Beckenham 1832-1862. Hardcover. Good. Written in several varying hands with 6 fine pencil drawing vignettes one laid-in loose one of Napoleons grave signed Chas. Cadby one pen and ink landscape vignette. A fine painting of sparrow and rose; several laid in drawings of architectural views mainly pastoral English scenes one view labeled Beckenham one view for the stake of William Hunt of Brentwood Protestant Marytyr died 1555 and landscape. Few clippings from publications stationery postcard views including those for Rydal Lake Westmoreland Beckenham Arundel Castle Grange Bridge Bolton Abbey Exeter Coniston Old Man and some Welsh landscapes loose or laid-in. two full-page pasted in photographs unidentified portraits likely of Bird or Cadby family and seven other photographs loose or laid in. Original paneled calf; covers detached but present spine mostly perished some contents loose. Written contents include copied poems of: Sun of the Sleepless by Lord Byron; From the Recesses by Sir John Bowring 1792-1872; a hymn: If all our hopes and all our fears by Sir John Bowring; Sweet is the balmy evening hour by Miss Mitford; It is not that my lot is low by Henry Kirke White; Byrons lament to H.K. White Unhappy White! While was in its spring And thy young muse just waved her joyous wing The spoiler came; and all thy promise fair Has sought the grave to sleep for ever there copied by Alfred Bird and dated 1862. Other original work by the Bird family include To the First of my brother Anemonies When Aging some lines from a memorial for Charles Cadby signed by Bird dated 1846 3 pages in memoriam of Albert Prince Consort died 1861 in the hand of Emily Bird dated 1862. Pasted to paper and mounted on doilies are 2 preserved dissected ivy-leaves said to be taken from Brompton cemetery. Commonplace books were collections of proverbial wisdom. Such books were essentially scrapbooks filled with items of every kind: medical recipes quotes letters poems proverbs and prayers. Many of the Bird familys commonplace book themes encircle death and mourning. Alfred Bird perhaps later Bird family member composed Fair but False in 1867 on unrequited love and in that same year The River of Life love poem to nature and another The Lords of Lochleaven. A memorial page left unfinished is for Emily Bird. Alfred and Emily Bird daughter born 1827 to Charles Cadby married at Westminster in April 1847. The book was passed between the two after their marriage where some nice Victorian themes are realized in the collection. Fine Victorian anthology tied to a single family. <br/><br/> hardcover

The first collected edition of seven popular satires by Edward Young exploring the nature of the love of praise. They were originally published in parts as The Universal Passion Printed for J. Roberts 1725-1728. For this collected edition by Jacob Tonson Young made hundreds of changes to spelling punctuation and italics; he added and eliminated lines and supplied a ten-page preface on the history and importance of satire. "The great achievement of Young's early career came in his seven satires entitled The Universal Passion published in separate folios between January 1725 and February 1728 and revised and collected as Love of Fame with a critical preface in March 1728. These Horatian satires with occasional panegyrics and Juvenalian climaxes for variety broke new poetical ground." - ODNB. Oxford: Printed at the Private Press of H. Daniel 1885 1885. First Daniel Press edition number 45 of 150 numbered copies. NCBEL I 1699. Vellum and boards somewhat rubbed and soiled; text fine though some signatures are lightly printed. 4to original quarter vellum blue paper boards untrimmed. An interesting later edition of a play originally entitled A Cure for the Cuckhold: A Pleasant Comedy published by bookseller Francis Kirkman in 1661 and perhaps speciously attributed to John Webster and William Rowley. Later critics Edmund Gosse among them thought that Rowley's contribution was crude he was "a rough playwright of the Jacobean age" and that Webster's part of the play stood alone as a "charming domestic drama of English country life." Gosse with the help of S. Spring-Rice and the printer Henry Daniel sought to correct that and they published this edition under the new title Love's Graduate: A Comedy which omitted the contributions attributed to Rowley. In the Prefatory Essay Gosse explains his editorial decisions and the play's history. He does not question the attribution though ESTC notes that it is doubtful. An early work by Rev. Alexander Dyce 1798-1869 the prolific compiler editor and scholar. See the ODNB. In the preface Dyce states that the "object of the present volume is to exhibit the growth and progress of the genius of our country-women in the department of poetry." He acknowledges the one earlier anthology dedicated to women poets George Colman's and Thornton Bonnel's Poems by Eminent Ladies 1755 reprinted in 1780 but points out its deficiency in containing "no extracts from rare books and . . . specimens of only eighteen poets." Contemporary quarter-brown suede over terracotta cloth boards gilt lettering to the spine red speckeld foredges new endpapers. Light rubbing to the suede leather hint of sunning to the front board else extremities remain in near fine condition. Contents remarkably well-preserved indicating only a touch of slight foxing chiefly confined to the preliminary pages otherwise without blemish markings or notations. Overall very good. The British Library in their catalogued entry notes the presence of two variants of the imprint 'The first line of the imprint has "And Sold". Scarce in commerce. <br/><br/>A remarkable and crucial historical account of the raging debates within the English parliament surrounding the events leading up to the Glorious Revolution of 1688 also known as the Bloodless Revolution An Réabhlóid Ghlórmhar Irish: Rèabhlaid Ghlòrmhor Scottish Gaelic; Chwyldro Gogoneddus Welsh; Glorieuze Overtocht Dutch which witnessed the deposition of James II also James VII of Scotland from the English Throne in favour of his daughter Mary II and her husband "stadtholder and de facto ruler of the Dutch Republic" William III of Orange. The Revolution would see the passage of the landmark Bill of Rights of 1689 ensured the exclusion of Catholics from the English throne severely curtailed the monarch's power and witnessed the effective establishment of a constitutional monarchy thereby ensuring the supremacy of Parliament. It further led to the Act of Toleration of 1689 granting toleration to "Nonconformist Protestants" but excluding Catholics whose emancipation would be delayed for a further 140 years. The present volume deals chiefly with Parliament's resolution relating to whether James had forfeited or abdicated the throne by virtue of his having discarded the "Great Seal of the Realm" into the River Thames prior to fleeing for France his subsequent capture at Kent and later exile under the protection of Louis XIV of France. Ultimately Parliament declared that: "King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." In 1801 Richard Alfred Davenport 1776-1852 an aspiring poet and energetic author began independently issuing an annual compendium of contemporary English poetry. Davenport believed that England lacked an annual like the French Almanach des Muses that reflected the depth and strength of its poets. He solicited the help of Sir Egerton Brydges Thomas Park and Anna Seward among others for obtaining contributions. The initial volume was a work of almost 500 pages containing hundreds of poems organized by Original Poetry including sections dedicated to sonnets Ancient Poetry the contribution of Brydges Fugitive Poetry Criticism a Catalogue of Poetry and Poetical Biography. The annual volumes continued for five years though not exactly on schedule; following the fifth volume it was altered to being issued biennially for the final three volumes making eight total at which time it ceased publication. Among the contributors to these first five volumes are Leigh Hunt twelve poems Anna Seward about 25 poems Brydges Anna Maria Porter Charlotte Smith Thomas Campbell Erasmus Darwin William Hayley Amelia Opie Robert Bloomfield Thomas Park M. G. Lewis and many minor but interesting poets whose works may have otherwise eluded attention. Davenport was an enigmatic and eccentric character who was responsible for several other interesting works. His wife was novelist Selima Davenport. London: Printed for F. and C. The Proprietors' Dispute: A gathering of five important pamphlets dealing with the acrimonious dispute between two groups of partners of the Covent Garden Theatre - commonly referred to as the "Proprietors' Dispute.

Some minor foxing browning and stains; overall the pamphlets are in very good condition with wide margins; enclosed in quarter morocco clamshell box. 5 vols 4to uniformly bound with attractive tan paper spines period-style and sprinkled paper boards with manuscript titles on the spines. A gathering of five important pamphlets dealing with the acrimonious dispute between two groups of partners of the Covent Garden Theatre - usually referred to as the "Proprietors' Dispute" - a quarrel that began in 1767 when two of the partners Thomas Harris and John Rutherford attempted to insert mistresses - particularly one Mrs. Lessingham - into the theatre company and have them cast in unsuitable roles. Harris and Rutherford squared off with George Colman and William Powell the opposing partners for over a year of accusations and counter accusations that resulted in a legal squabble and a classic pamphlet war. The contents of the pamphlets are informative not only with regard to the dispute itself but they also document everyday operations of the Covent Garden Theatre and theatrical management of the period in general. In all Lowe describes ten pamphlets dealing with the Proprietors' Dispute; rarely are five found together. Full description of five volumes upon request. unknown

Alchemy Ten printer's specimens copies of curious alchemical woodblock engravings from the 'Hortus Sanitatis' and other early sources with captioned title and price.
Undated: early nineteenth century. On one side each of two leaves of thin laid paper quality of tissue. Both leaves are good: lightly creased and spotted on aged paper. The first leaf roughly 19 x 18 cm carries six illustrations arranged 2 x 3 and with the captions reading: 'Price 2s/6d a way of purifying sea water'; 'Price 1s/6d preparation Acid Sulphuric'; 'Price of block 1s/- Physician Galenical School'; 'Price 1/- cold still'; 'Price 1/- Pelican'; '2s/6d distillation'. Printers blue pencil around third woodcut. The second leaf roughly 24 x 18.5 cm carries four illustrations arranged 2 x 2 the largest two being roughly 8 x 6 cm. The captions read: 'Bufonites' from the 'Hortus Sanitatis' of 1497 showing a man extracting a bezoar stone from the head of a frog; 'preparation medicinal earths'; 'obtaining draconites' and 'Hippocrates sleeve'. Along one margin: 'Please return specimens'. The 'Bufonites' engraving is certainly a skillful copy and it may be that the cuts were originally produced for a Roxburghe-Club-type publication before joining the printer's stock. English 1819-1884 a brother-in-law of Gen. George McClellan. Less than seven weeks after writing this Letter English died near his home during the Battle of Eliska near the Baldwin/Monroe County line. Very few of the Company's men survived the Battle; but his cousin Thomas survived and was promoted to Major. At the time of his death Jonathan had a wife and four young children. unknown

[Eugenics]. PEARSON, Karl (1857-1936, English biostatistician and mathematician)
An autograph letter signed by Karl Pearson to an acquaintance discussing the subject of telegony
Very Good. Duodecimo 4 pages on 2 conjugate leaves Hampstead 29 March 1899. Folded for posting; a few light smudges; paper a little unevenly tanned; in very good condition. The letter addressed to a Dr Williams begins with a declaration: 'I hasten to say that I personally am not a believer in telegony' a theory of heredity claiming that offspring can inherit the characteristics of a previous mate of the female parent. He corrects a misunderstanding that may have arisen from something he said regarding dog and horse breeders; 'It is also attested of negresses that have born to a white man that they will bear afterwards partially white children to a black man. some years ago I investigated the matter by testing for some five hundred pairs of sons & daughters whether the younger were more like the Father than the Mother but I could find no trace of it. Francis Galton at the discussion which followed the paper spoke of telegony as a superstition and Lankester Poulton & others had nothing to say in favour of it'. <p>He refers to Charles Darwin's account in '"Origin of Species" . of Lord Morton's quagga' and notes that Ewart has been trying to repeat the experiment without success. 'I should say that telegony like the inheritance of acquired characters may have an element of truth in it but all the arguments in favour of it so far deduced are from the scientific standpoint worthless. It is a widespread superstition'. <p>Karl Pearson 'has been credited with establishing the discipline of mathematical statistics. He founded the world's first university statistics department at University College London in 1911 and contributed significantly to the field of biometrics and meteorology. Pearson was also a proponent of Social Darwinism and eugenics and his thought is an example of what is today described as scientific racism' Wikipedia.
