Pencil notation inside front cover; text otherwise unmarked by previous owners. The frontispiece is dampstained and all pages are lightly foxed and age-toned. Some occasional light fingerprint smudges as well. The plates have faded slightly onto their facing pages. The binding is tight. Very good condition for an 18th-century book! A book of poems fables and fictional conversations between children and a teacher designed to educate and promote moral virtues. The work is dedicated to Princess Amelia daughter of King George III. Originally on a bifolium but now with the two leaves separated and attached to a white stub from an album. In good condition on aged and lightly-spotted paper and trimmed at the head. Laid out in the conventional manner With the reverse of the final leaf printed in landscape so that the item can be folded into the customary package. The same page carries the 'Memorandum of Association' in small print including 24 lettered 'objects for which the Company is established' including 'v To acquire the right to levy taxes on Bicycles Piano-Organs Musical-Evenings Wagners "Ring" Flashing Street Advertisements Motor-Cars Lord Mayor's Shows Public Statues Matinee Hats Minor Poets "Bloomers" Light Tenors Professional Beauties Golfers Drawing-room Receiters and Money-lenders.' The document begins with an Iinitial list of directors and other company officers followed by the 'Prospectus' proper beginning: 'THIS Company has been formed to acquire as a going concern the old-established business of the BRITISH EMPIRE which deals in Colonies Armies Ironclads Law Making Treaty Ports Coaling Stations Post Offices Telegraphs Telephones Public Education Criminal Prosecutions Pioneering Fighting Massacring Civilising Concession Granting Prospecting Mission Founding &c. &c. and is believed to be the largest of its kind in the World.' The prospectus continues in the same vein with a list of the 'principal Foreign Agencies of the business' from Aden to Zanzibar adding: 'In addition to the properties enumerated above the Company will acquire from the Vendors "spheres of influence" in all parts of the world.' References follow to 'the important asset known as the Suzerainty of the South African Republic' 'the "Open Door" situate in the Chinese Empire' 'prospecting expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic Regions' and other international affairs. There is also a description of the state of the books by 'Messrs. Olde Turk & Co.' C. R. Harrison in his 'House of Harrison' 1914 explains the context of the satire: 'The twenty-second Christmas number of Truth devoted itself to a clever political satire entitled "The British Empire Unlimited." Truth is before all things Liberal in its politics and the aim of the satire was to poke fun and ridicule at the then Conservative Government the author especially attacking the Marquis of Salisbury who was Prime Minister on the ground of his wide Imperial Policy and satirizing his well-known ability for administration and attention to detail. The story represents Lord Salisbury bringing out a gigantic Commercial Company entitled "The British Empire Unlimited" to run the affairs of the nation on a commercial basis; he being Promoter and Director and the other members of the Government and celebrities of the day each having his allotted post. The prospectus like that of other commercial undertakings was full of bold advertisement and was prepared confidentially with a view to bursting on the public attention as a surprise.' Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and numerous black and white in-text illustrations. 123pp. Contemporary ownership inscription in pencil to the front pastedown: "W M Emery / 4205 Yaguchidai / Yokohama" and the odd contemporary pencil annotation elsewhere. A very good copy the binding square and firm with a little toning to the extremities. The contents with a little toning some faint scattered foxing to the preliminary pages and a few pages with minor corner creases are otherwise in very good order throughout. An uncommon and rather charming illustrated reader designed to teach English to Japanese children comprising 41 "lessons" concerning typically English or American situations scenarios and occupations. Judging by the inscription the present copy was quite possibly owned by an English teacher working in Yokohama during the period.</p><p>WorldCat records only one institution worldwide with holdings of this title National Diet Library Tokyo all of which are later editions third-sixth editions published during the later 1920s and 1930s. Without date or place. London 1850s. Printed on one side of a piece of wove paper 32.5 x 24 cm. Text clear and complete on aged paper with chipping and closed tears to edges. The only copy of this title on COPAC is at the British Library folio 4 pp published by Zenas T. Purday where it is ascribed to Blewitt and tentatively dated to around 1850. Six eight-line stanzas with chorus 'Jump high jump low jumping we go.' Possibly written with satiric intent. Begins 'In Turkey there dwelt such a mighty Bashaw That whatever he did or said it was law; And he vow'd that his daughter should give her fair hand In marriage to one of a famed foreign land.' The second stanza explains that ' 'Mong the guests was a German Von Baron Bohmbig Who in Holland had purchased his shoes for this rig Which in speed should outvie even Mercury's wings And of Indian Rubber were made and with springs.' In the last stanza we learn that 'the Turks they do say His skeleton's jumping to this very day: - . And believe it or not for prove it I can 'Twas this which gave rise to the flying Dutch-man.' Captains Courageous is an 1897 novel, by Rudyard Kipling, that follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr., the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon after he is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman in the North Atlantic. The novel originally appeared as a serialization in McClure's, beginning with the November 1896 edition. The following year it was published in its entirety as a novel, first in the United States by Doubleday, and a month later in the United Kingdom by Macmillan. It is Kipling's only novel set entirely in America. In 1900, Teddy Roosevelt extolled the book in his essay "What We Can Expect of the American Boy," praising Kipling for describing "in the liveliest way just what a boy should be and do.". The book's title comes from the ballad Mary Ambree, which starts, "When captains courageous, whom death could not daunt". Kipling had previously used the same title for an article on businessmen as the new adventurers, published in The Times of 23 November 1892. Translator Kamuran Serif Saru was famous with his Shakespeare translations into Ottoman Turkish and modern Turkish. Özege: 2971.

"The political satire against the Duc des Luynes, according to Barbier, was the cause of the author's imprisonment in the Bastille where he died. The bibliography of the early French editions, as in the case of the more celebrated Menippean satire, does not appear to have been studied so that it would be difficult to say with just what celerity it was translated and published in English. However, the fact that it was translated is not necessarily an indication of the concern of Jacobean England with the internal affairs of France. Handsomely bound in near contemporary richly gilt-tooled red straight-grain morocco lettered in gilt to upper board 'Wm. Vavasour' A.E.G. Lightly rubbed and marked spine sunned. Marbled endpapers newspaper clipping pasted to FEP extracts of devotional verse in manuscript to blank fly-leaves later newspaper clippings relating to the Vavasour family to front blank fly- leaf very occasional light spotting terminal gathering and rear endpapers dampstained at head. Early inscription to front blank fly-leaf: 'For / Doctor Vavasour L.L. D. / from / The Author / through Doctor Hales' and annotation: 'Judge Baillie / the author'. The first edition of judge and legal writer John Bayley's 1763-1841 explication of the Anglican liturgy. This copy was once the property of Church of England clergyman and sometime minister of Stow-on-the-Wold Richard Frederick Vavasour 1786-1853 and evidently later passed to his son William Thomas Vavasour 1820-1863. Marbled endpapers contemporary armorial bookplate to FEP and inked ownership inscription to front blank fly-leaf of Cosmo George Duke of Gordon. Cosmo George Gordon third Duke of Gordon 1720-1752 Scottish peer. Gordon was named after his father's close friend Jacobite sympathiser Cosimo III de' Medici 1642-1723. Unlike his father Alexander Gordon second Duke of Gordon c.1678-1728 who fought with the Jacobites at the Battle of Sheriffmuir during the 1715 Rising Cosmo despite the pleas of his younger brother Lord Lewis declined to support the Rising of 1745. Edinburgh: Printed by James Watson 1712. 30 308 2 309-429pp 1. Title page in red and black. Leaf B1 is a cancellans with 'nople asure' in line eight of text corrected to 'no pleasure'. Some copies have both states of B1 the present copy does not. Handsomely bound in later richly gilt-tooled dark green morocco A.E.G. Lightly rubbed. Elaborate brocade endpapers armorial bookplate of Thomas Maitland Dundrennan to FEP internally clean and crisp. An attractively bound eighteenth-century Edinburgh-printed edition of the controversial ‘Laud’s Prayer book’ an avowedly English-influenced version of the liturgy issued by Robert Young printer to Charles I in 1637. Drafted by the Bishops of Ross and Dunblane John Maxwell d. 1639 and James Wedderburn 1585-1639 the Scottish Book of Common prayer was largely based upon the rite first issued in 1549 during the reign of King Edward VI. Introduced to an unaccepting Scottish population on 23rd July 1637 by Archbishop Laud at the behest of King Charles I it attempted to replace John Knox's Calvinist Book of Common Order and proved the greatest symbol of the unpopular standardisation of Anglican Protestantism throughout the British Isles. The text was one of several triggers of the Covenant movement and the first stages of the War of Three Kingdoms.Despite its unpopularity this historic text influenced the 1662 revision of the English Liturgy the 1789 American Book of Common Prayer and the Scottish Episcopalian Liturgy of 1929. Thomas Maitland Lord Dundrennan 1792-1851 judge and sometime Solicitor General for Scotland. A devotee of antiquarian literature Dundrennan amassed an extensive library - 'a monument' according to Lord Cockburn 'honourable to his taste and judgment'. With A companion to the altar and Tate and Brady's A new version of the Psalms both with separate title pages but continuous register. Without frontispiece and 10 engraved plates. Contemporary gilt-ruled calf all edges red. Rubbed corners bumped. Occasional light spotting. The sole Chester-printed edition of a devotional vade-mecum for Anglican clergymen issued by prolific Cheshire printer John Poole 1735-1793. Two other equally scarce editions were printed at Manchester and Liverpool likely around the same time. Intriguingly every eighth leaf is numbered sequentially up to 'No. 29' perhaps suggesting that the book was issued in parts as an affordable way acquiring a copy of the liturgy. [Log book of a nineteenth-century English [Kentish?] Master Brewer, 1841 to 1844]:
Brewing in Kent Manuscript volume of early Victorian English Kentish master brewer's dated records & calculations with brewery unknown but employees named and occasional memoranda.
Entries dated from 8 October 1841 to 14 May 1844. 8vo 249 pp. In original black leather blind-tooled binding marbled endpapers. The text clear and complete apart from a few leaves at the front and end which have faded through damp damage and one leaf becoming detached and worn at extremities. The damp has also detached the book from the binding the glue of which has dissolved. The only clue of the location of the brewery is the reference to 'Ramsgate' below. The volume consists almost exclusively of pages of closely-written dated calculations with pages giving number of barrels of 'Stocks pumped up' and 'left for next brewing'. Other repeated phrases include 'dipped No. 1 Copper'. The top of the pages usually carry a name or two names presumably of those employed in certain tasks that day. The number of names indicates a substantial concern: D. Amos James Amos Austen Baker Bays Bean Blackman Buss Corne Court Daniels Dunkin Hart Holton Long Mills Murton Newport Pierce Pile Read Sadleton Sankey Sharpe Sheather Smith Stocks Strout Tappenden Wise. Occasional memoranda written crosswise flesh out the volume. These include: 'Change of Yeast Got 12 Gs. from Towson 's Ramsgate which weighed 101 lbs. We were obliged to use the large tan for Hops back as the new back was not finished cannot well make out the difference between B worts & Hop worts unless it is that the rolls were set too close 12/11 Changed new Hop back with cold Legr. & find it holds a full 120 Barrels' 'Both Coppers and engine flues cleaned' and 'Very short down supposed to be Chas's manner of damping up as there is almost a difference of 10 Barrels between his & Geo's <hernings>'.
