"Photography in the Ottoman Empire 1839-1923 provides an account of the history of photography in the Ottoman Empire between the years 1839-1923, an important though neglected field in the history of an early photography. The sultans of the Ottoman Empire traditionally shaped the arts of their day, and their enthusiastic reaction to the discovery of photography was to be crucial in the development of photography in the Empire. This third edition of the book published by YEM Publications has been updated and enlarged to incorporate new information gathered over the years and many new photographs that have been added to my archive. I have made sure that the revised text comprises the latest information available on the subject. Many nation states were created in the former Ottoman territories in Europe, Asia and Africa. I have not included the individual photographic histories of these countries but endeavoured to focus primarily on photography within the present boundaries of the Republic of Turkey. A list of photographers who worked in the Ottoman Empire has been provided to assist all those who are interested in the history of photography in Turkey and the Middle East. The names of photographers that I have come across in documents written in Ottoman Turkish script have been given as spelt. The first two editions treated the story of photography in the Ottoman Empire from the announcement of its discovery in 1839 up to 1919, but this new edition has been extended up to the year 1923 when the Turkish Republic was founded. ‎* Julius Karl Hatschek (* 21. August 1872 in Czernowitz; ? 12. Juni 1926 in Göttingen) war ein Staats-, Verwaltungs- und Völkerrechtler. Von 1909 bis 1926 lehrte er an der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Julius Hatschek wurde als Sohn eines Rechtsanwalts in Czernowitz geboren, das bis 1918 zu Österreich-Ungarn gehörte. Er studierte Rechtswissenschaften an den Universitäten Leipzig, Czernowitz, Wien und Heidelberg. Seine Promotion erfolgte 1895 in Czernowitz, seine Habilitation 1898 bei Georg Jellinek in Heidelberg. Dort wirkte er zunächst als Privatdozent, später als außerplanmäßiger Professor. Im Jahr 1905 wurde er als außerordentlicher Professor an die preußische Verwaltungsakademie in Posen berufen. Seit 1909 lehrte er als außerordentlicher Professor, seit 1921 als Ordinarius für Staats-, Verwaltungs- und Völkerrecht an der Universität Göttingen. Hatschek hinterließ ein umfangreiches Gesamtwerk, das alle von ihm in der Lehre vertretenen Gebiete umfasst. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt lag auf dem englischen Verfassungs- und Verwaltungsrecht. Hatschek war in Göttingen ein Außenseiter seiner Fakultät, zum einen als Anhänger der Weimarer Republik, zum anderen wegen des latenten Antisemitismus, der sich gegen den evangelisch getauften Juden richtete. He was born in Kingston upon Hull, England; his parents were Henry Ward, a cleric, and Jane Sandwith, daughter of Humphry Sandwith III, a surgeon there. He studied at Merchant Taylors' School[2] and at Brasenose College, Oxford, at which he became a Fellow in 1869 and a tutor in 1870. His compositions consisted of editorials which he submitted to The Times. Additionally, he edited a four-volume anthology, The English Poets (1880); Men of the Reign (1885); The Reign of Queen Victoria (1887); English Art in the Public Galleries of London (1888); and Men of the Time, which ran to 12 editions.
