Volume II is in much better condition than Volume I. Vol. I: 587 p. clean and unmarked within on strong paper only faintly age-toned--but end pages are foxed and faintly stained with 4" closed tear on front end page; front gutter cracked exposing sewn signature; many wonderful engravings by uncredited however "eminent" artists ranging from small vignettes to full-page plates; embossed black boards with gilt lettering decoration representations of on front board and spine have bumped and rubbing along tender spine. Volume II: 680 p. clean and unmarked on strong paper only faintly age-toned but somewhat foxed at some lower edges; end pages are of paper of lesser quality and are quite tan with one chipped corner; lavishly illustrated with engravings ranging from small vignettes to full-page plates; binding firm; clean embossed black boards with gilt lettering decoration and representations of protagonist of novel have bumped corners and some rubbing at crown and foot of spine with beginning lesion at upper seam between rear board and spine.
