Folded once for postage. On the otherwise-blank reverse is Laye's monogram with her initials. Reads: 'My dear Kenneth. / Thank you for your very sweet letter. I am so delighted you liked the broadcast. It brought back many happy memories to me & when I sat & listened to it all alone I must say I longed for the past. / Bless you. / Evelyn Laye.' 25 November 1969. From the Palace Theatre London. In his entry on Laye in the Oxford DNB Sheridan Morley describes her as a ‘bright particular star’. 1p 12mo on grey-blue paper with monogram of her initials printed at top left. The letter concerns the 1969-70 Palace Theatre production of ‘Phil the Fluter’ in which she played Mrs Fitzmaurice. Addressed to ‘Dear Kenneth’ and with good firm signature ‘Evelyn Laye’. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. She thanks him for the letter and ‘the lovely Shamrock’ which she has planted ‘in a little pot as it was so very thoughtful of you to sentd it to me for Good Luck’. The typed text ends ‘The show is going very well and I am so glad that you enjoyed it.’ Beneath this in autograph: ‘Come & see me but send up word from the Stage-door / Bless you / Evelyn Laye’. 25 November [1969]. Autograph Letter Signed 'F. C. Bernand' from the humorist Sir Francis Cowley Burnand to the illustrator Harry Furniss lamenting that there will be 'no dinner for the Punch boys' in Christmas week and discussing an unsuccessful illustration.
On Burnand's letterhead 27 The Boltons SW London 8 December 1891. 2pp. landscape 12mo. Addressed to 'Dear Furniss'. He is glad to hear of Furniss's success: 'Your tour ends after the last dinner but one of the year. No dinner Xmas week! awful that isn't it When all are feasting no dinner for the Punch boys!!' He hopes Furniss will be 'here with us'. Had Furniss been 'on the spot' Burnand would have got him 'to substitute something for your John Bull picture in almanack which no one I do not speak of "The Table" but of our best friends outside comprehends. However thats done & can't be undone; but its as well to bear it in mind so as to know the style of thing to avoid when Xmas comes again'. He reminds Furniss that Christmas is 'a time of "peace & goodwill"' and urges him to 'let byegones be byegones whether spelt thus or "bygones" - which I don't know bury the hatchet as the Tomahawk was long ago buried'. The 'Tomahawk' was a a satirical London magazine of the 1870s and the reference may be to a feud between Furniss and its editor Arthur William a'Beckett 1844-1909 who was to fall on hard times towards the end of his life. Corrected Autograph Manuscript and Typescript of a chapter of a book by F. J. H. Darton Frederick Joseph Harvey Darton titled 'The Microcosm of England' on the London publisher Rudolph Ackermann headed 'Aquatint collection draft'.
London 1920s. Both items in good condition on lightly-aged paper with slight rust spotting. Manuscript: 12pp 4to. On twelve leaves paginated 1-12. With emendations and corrections. Note at head of page: 'Dates & title meant to be typical only: subject to revision from collection catalogue etc & to fit later details of book.' Also at head of page in red pencil: 'Aquatint collection draft first chapter'. Manuscript: 9pp. 4to. On nine leaves attached with stud last leaf loose. The piece begins: 'The first book containing coloured aquatint illustrations published by the man who made such volumes popular is The Microcosm of London. It came from the Repository of Arts at 101 Strand: the bookseller-publishers of that day were fond of large-sounding titles for their domed libraries like the Temple of the Muses or the Juvenile Repository. No. 101 Strand was kept by a very enterprising Saxon Rudolph Ackermann who since his arrival in London in the 'nineties of the eighteenth century had been a skilled coach-designer the proprietor of a drawing school and a printseller.' While there is no indication of the book of which this was the intended first chapter nor any record of its publication it is likely to have been published in some form: Darton's literary output was voluminous as his entry in the Oxford DNB indicates. Darton publisher Autograph Manuscript and two Typescripts of an article by the publisher F. J. H. Darton Frederick Joseph Harvey Darton entitled ''West One' on the foundation and history of Grafton Street in London.
London; 1920s. The three items are all in very good condition on lightly-aged paper with slight marking from rusty paperclips. Manuscript: 13pp. 4to. On 13 leaves paginated 1-13. With a few emendations and corrections. The two typescripts both well typed have different layouts to one another. First smaller Typescript: 9pp. 4to. Second larger Typescript: Carbon copy. 9pp. 4to. The article begins: '"The iniquity of oblivion blindly scattereth her poppy . . . In vain we compute our felicities by the advantage of our good names since bad have equal durations." Who was godfather to Grafton Street that short byway of London which from many associations is like to outlive by far any intimate knowledge of its builder It is a pretty irony that though there have been Dukes of Grafton not less eminent than amiable and the street is populous with both the shades and the living forms of men vitally connected with the arts the man who lives thus in bricks and mortar was called "Booby Grafton" and it was said that "as to books he was totally illiterate." And he certainly did not buy that patch of land just west of Bond Street in order to make it a mart of books and pictures and fine jewels. He bought it this second Duke of the title "for gardening" which the greatest book in the world records as man's oldest trade.' The article concludes: 'Perhaps books are the best way to come by a knowledge and love of London. And Grafton Street with its links Bond Street Dover Street Albemarle Street knows a great deal about Books.' The first typescript follows the manuscript in the use of the word 'like' in the first paragraph although amending this in pencil to 'likely'; in the second typescript which is more attractively laid out the word is given as 'likely' suggesting that it is of later production. While there is no record of the publication of this essay it is likely to have been published: Darton's voluminous literary output as his entry in the Oxford DNB indicates included contributions to the Daily News. Letter from 67 Abbey House Abbey Road London NW8. 11 July 1977. Both items in good condition on lightly-aged paper. The letter is 2pp. 4to and is written in a playful tone. Escaping the accompanying spoof Steward writes: 'Your remark that Glasgow was as alien to you as Mars got me thinking along the lines of the attached headline . . . . . It would be a good idea for a story if it hadnt been done about three thousand times already See Robert Bloch Report on Sol III and others. Changing the subject he writes: 'I shall be watching out for NWSF 29 with your 12000 word novelette in it - in the paperback edition of course I'm only an impoverished accountant.' Regarding the manuscript of Malcolm's book 'Time and Again' he writes: 'I think you deserve better than Robert Hale publisher although their list may have improved since I stopped receiving their dreadful SF novels for review in my local paper.' He next discusses Malcolm's 'Hal Clement-like explanation of the background to your current work-in-progress' which he illustrates with diagrams. The letter concludes with a reference to Malcolm's interest in 'Pioneer Aviation'. The article 'By our reporter' is 1p. 12mo and typed apart from the headline which is neatly written out in imitation of a sans serif font. It begins: 'At 5am today scottish mean time A Viking spacecraft successfully touched down in SauchiehallsTreet sic in the city of Glasgow. After shutdown of the propulsion systems cameras were activated and the search for signs of life began. Don Malcolm mission director said at the Paisley mission control centre .'.
