G. A. Storey RA painter and illustrator. Two Autograph Letters Signed. ONE: to 'My dear Wolfestan' on artists scientists and colour theory. TWO: to 'Mrs A'Beckett' on writing a memoir of his brother-in-law.
LETTER ONE to Wolfestan: 2 June 1884; 19 St John's Wood Road. LETTER TWO to Mrs A'Beckett: 5 May 1898; on letterhead of Hougoumont 39 Broadhurst Gardens South Hampstead N.W. London. LETTER ONE to Wolfestan: 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. Damage to text including signature 'E. A. Storey' along inner edge of last page by clumsy removal from mount repaired with archival tape. Otherwise in good condition lightly aged. Folded. Wolfestan's letter is 'capital' and he hopes he will send it 'as it exactly backs up my own statement'. On thte previous day he saw and responded to 'the letter of G Roberts': 'the fact is that in the lecture itself I spoke of the scientific theories & said that although they were deeply interesting they were of little use to painters who had to deal with pigments or paints and not with those elements of light which cause the various sensations to the red-seeing or gree-seeing or violet seeing nerves'. He considers the 'report in the Builder' 'very imperfect and disjointed made by an utter ass' and he does not think there is 'a single sentence in it that I could fairly say is mine'. If he publishes the lecture he will send it to him. Returning to Wolfestan's letter he finds that it 'will go far to explain the difference between artists and scientists on the subject of colour'. LETTER TWO to Mrs A'Beckett': 3pp 12mo. Bifolium on grey paper. Damp staining on blank reverse of second leaf otherwise in good condition. He and his wife were looking forward to her 'at home' but could not attend because he had to write a memoir of his brother-in-law whose death took place the day after he saw her. 'It was for 'The Magazine of Art' and of couse was wanted immediately in fact almost by return of post and I could not get it finished till late last evening.' Both on letterheads of Riverside Wallingford Berkshire .16 and 23 December 1883. Both items in fair condition bifoliums on lightly aged paper. ONE: 16 December 1883. 3pp. 12mo. Telling the story of the 'Wallingford Belles' beginning with the family of 'Thomas Clark . landlord of the Lamb Hotel formerly called the Bell' When Grant visits him the following summer he will give him 'lessons in painting & as much Lawn Tennis as you like and there is no end to the Archaeology of the neighbourhood'. TWO: 23 December 1883. 4pp. 12mo. He begins by offering to aid Grant's researchehs by search the parish registers. He states that he is 'very fond of birds & natural history generally' and was interested in the 'account of your dear father & the moor hen'. He describes the birds he sees when he looks out of the window and that when he is gardening 'they follow me about like little dogs - & all very pleased to be spoken to'. Inscribed at bottom right: 'With Compliments from The Writer. 1938.' And beneath inscription again by Moore in pencil: 'Kindly return after reading if not required to 28 Bouverie Place Exeter. As copies are now scarce'. At the end of the document the author has added '2' to his address and has amended the following: 'A Memorial Tablet to Dr. Thomas Bilney will D.V. amended to 'was' be unveiled on September 19th 1931 in the Lollards' Pit at Norwich. added in manuscript: 'by Mrs. Tapley-Soper.' Mrs Tapley-Soper being the author herself'. Connor appeals to the reader to 'co-operate in any way in commemorating the Fourth Centenary of the Martyrdom of Thomas Bilney M.A. LL.D. and in bringing to the Remembrance of the English-speaking Peoples the Fourth Centenary of the Dawn of the Reformation'. The tone verges on the unhinged with such exclamations as 'What did Joan of Arc do for England Nothing. What did Thomas Bilney do for England More than anyone can tell.' and 'Is there a conspiracy of silence Is England to be ignorant and indifferent to the Fourth Centenary of the Reformation in England God helping us NO!' Pendred Broadhurst Esq’. Boughton begins by thanking him for his ‘kind note’. He is ‘quite out of photos for the moment - there has been such “a run on†me’. His portrait is not ‘in commerce’. He is enclosing ‘a Menu Card of a dinner given me by Messrs Harper in New York’ which has ‘a portrait by Mr L. Alma Tadema R.A. which I think is a little out of the Common. There is also an illustration from our book - E. A. Abbey and mine sketching “Rambles in Holland.†which the Harpers published’. AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED by the English Singer and Composer VIRGINIA GABRIEL.
Grosvenor Place 19th Century. . Good. - Over 15 words penned on 5-1/8 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide "5. Chester Street. Grosvenor Place S.W." embossed stationery. Replying to a request for an autograph the singer writes that "In compliance with your wishes I have the honour to sign myself yrs truly Virginia Gabriel". Once folded the note is mounted with glue from the verso onto slightly larger heavier stock clipped from an album. An unidentified autograph note is mounted on the verso of the mount. Good. <p>The English singer and composer Virginia Gabriel 1825-1877 studied piano with Johann Peter Pixis Theodor Dohler Sigismond Thalberg and Bernhard Molique. She also studied composition with the opera composer Saverio Mercadante. Gabriel composed popular ballads which were highly regarded but given the times she struggled to gain recognition for her more serious compositions and she had to personally publish her cantata "Dreamland". Gabriel died from injuries sustained from a fall from a carriage just a few short years after marrying the librettist George March. In addition to "Dreamland" Gabriel wrote several cantatas including "Evangeline" and "Graziella". She also wrote several operas including "Widows Bewitched" "A Quiet Chateau" "Lost and Found" "Grass Widows" "The Shepherd of Cournouailles" among others. Grosvenor Place, 19th Century. unknown
