Autograph Letter in the third person from Lord Stafford George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke of Sutherland and 2nd Marquis of Stafford to 'Mr. Nichols' John Bowyer Nichols regarding a work by 'Mr. Dallaway'.
27 April 1831. 1p. 4to. Bifolium addressed on reverse of second leaf by Stafford to 'Mr. Nichols 25. Parliament St. Westminster'. Very good on lightly-aged paper with seal cut away from second leaf and thin strip of stub along one edge. Ap. 27. 1831.' The note possibly refers to the new edition of 'The Parochial Topography of the Rape of Arundel in the Western Division of the County of Sussex' published by Nichols in 1832 part of Cartwright's revision of Dallaway's work which Nichols had begun reprinting in 1830. 27 April 1831. unknown

George H. Haynes
The Senate of the United States In Theory and Practice [2 vol.]
Cambridge (MA), Houghton Mifflin Co. / Riverside Press, 1938. First edition of Georges Haynes' classic. Two octavo volumes, 220 x 150 mm each. Both volumes share the same pagination, the first having 567 pp. and second starting p. 568 to end at p. 1118. Hardcover, original editor's red cloth, with author's name in gold and title within a black lozenge on spine. Small paper of the "Livraria Agir Editôra", a Rio de Janeiro bookstore, tipped in at the beginning of the first volume. Each vol. has a black-and-white picture as frontispiece. Both volumes show several black-and-white illustrations. Some yellowing and foxing throughout with most pages being toned. All legible, sturdy binding, no bad smell, not ex-library. PP. 340 to 363 (first volume) have slightly folded corners with no damage to the text. "The 1938 publication of George Haynes’ two-volume The Senate of the United States: Its History and Practice instantly made Haynes the nation’s leading academic authority on that institution. Reviewers routinely ranked Haynes’ work with Charles Warren’s monumental three-volume The Supreme Court in United States History, published 15 years earlier. While others had produced major studies examining individual areas of Senate activity, and while Lindsay Rogers had created an extended essay on the institution in defense of unlimited debate, Haynes was the first to attempt a comprehensive history." George Harris Healy (1908-1971), Professor of English and curator of Rare Books at Cornell University:
George Harris Healy Professor of English and curator of Rare Books at Cornell University. Typed Letter Signed to 'Mr. Duff' discussing the content of two letters by Daniel Defoe their monetary value auction houses Dr. Rosenbach of New York.
On letterhead of the Department of English Cornell University Ithaca New York. 22 February 1949. 1p. foolscap 8vo. In fair condition aged and lightly creased with some wear to extremities. Healy begins by thanking Duff for his letter and 'for your generosity in sending me copies of the two letters of Daniel Defoe'. He explains that he has 'searched for their whereabouts for about ten years' and had finally become convinced 'that unless they were in your family they were lost'. The next paragraph of 13 lines discusses 'the relationship between the letters and Bowrey's interest in Juan Fernandos' with reference to: the 'presence of Bowrey's jottings' Sir William Temple Selkirk's return to England in October 1711 and the writing of Robinson Crusoe eight years later. He begins the third paragraph by stating that the reason why Bowrey wanted to see Defoe is 'beyond precise explanation' before reproducing a long note he proposes to publish on the subject with reference to 'Bowrey's first enquiry' and 'Mr. Review'. The fourth paragraph concerns 'the pecuniary value of the manuscripts' with Healy stating that 'since all manuscripts are unique that is a hard question'. He explains how the letters might be offered at auction at 'Sotheby's or Hodgson's of London' adding: 'you might do even better some have by offering them to the Rosenbach Company 15 East 51st Street New York City. Rosenbach is willing to pay high prices for good things and he does so cheerfully.' If Duff follows this course of action Healy suggests that he refers to him 'on the subject of authenticity history importance and the like'. The letter concludes with Healy confirming that he would be happy to receive photographs of the letters. On letterhead of the Department of English, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. 22 February 1949. unknown

George Lillie Craik (1798-1866), Scottish author and literary critic, Professor of English Literature and History at the Queen's
George Lillie Craik Scottish literary critic. Four Autograph Letters Signed all 'Geo. L. Craik' to 'the forgotten tenant of Craigcrook' John Hunter
The first letter addressed from Holywood Belfast; the other two in envelopes with Belfast postmarks. Three letters dated 25 July 1861 and 13 and 23 January 1862. The other letter undated. Totalling 16pp. 12mo. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. With two envelopes both initaled 'G. L. C.' with Penny Red postage stamps and Belfast postmarks 13 and 25 January 1862 both addressed by Craik to 'John Hunter Esq: Craigcrook by Edinburgh' also a similar envelope with Belfast postmark dated 27 August 1861 addressed to Hunter at 'Robertson's Lodgings 24 St. Stephen's Green North Dublin'. Chatty friendly letters in a crabbed difficult hand. On 13 January 1862 Craik writes: 'I am very glad you have spoken to Dr. John Brown. I have rather a curious story to tell you about the getting up of the last edition of the Encyc. Brit. if there were time. I am so delighted thhat you agree with me about <> Price's article. I find it <> most people - but it will work its way.' The letter of 23 January 1862 begins: 'My dear Hunter Here is Dodd's most characteristic and interesting letter which I ought perhaps to have returned before. I hope the copy of my book has reached the N. B. North British Review by this time. To my surprise upon receiving a list of the copies sent out I found none for any of the quarterly Reviews. I have recommended strongly that copies should be sent at least to the Edinburgh the Quarterly and the Westminster.' The letter of 25 July 1861 largely concerns 'the Cardross Case'. One letter 'Friday p.m.' makes suggestions for a planned trip to Dublin by Hunter. Hunter was the son of Professor James Hunter 1745-1837 and nephew by marriage of the editor of the Edinburgh Review Francis Jeffrey 1773-1850. See Helen Watt 'John Hunter the Forgotten Tenant of Craigcrook' Edinburgh 1977. The first letter addressed from Holywood, Belfast; the other two in envelopes with Belfast postmarks. George Nassau [George Richard Savage Nassau (1756–1823) English country gentleman, known as a bibliophile]:
George Nassau; bibliophile Autograph Letter Signed "Geo Nassau" to unnamed correspondent but possibly Bryan Higgins see Note below. declining to subscribe to a new "institution".
6 Jan 1794. Three pages 4to bifolium some staining and aging but complete and legible. Text: The experiments & conversations to which you so kindly invite me to subscribe are I think calculated for those only who have made some advancxement in the study of the Chemical department of Natural Philosophy and my gleanings in this field of science have been sp very profitless that I cannot but be sensible how little qualified I am to become a member of such an institutionas the one proposed. From a sense therefore of my own insufficiency I am induced to decline the invitation held out to me - in addition however to this consideration an evening engagement is hardly compatible with the sacrifices I am in the habit of making to my friends & which meet with considerable interruption in the early months of the year by the relish I have for Italian song and the grander harmony of the sacred drama. I have strictly adhered to your injunctions and answered yourletter with that freedom of sentiment which you urged me to adopt - In your estimation I am satisfied I could not in any other way so strongly evince the sense I entertain of your kind motive for addressing me - accept my warmest thanks .".Note: "In 1794 the Irish physician lecturer and experimentalist Bryan Higgins M.D. 1741-1818 founded the Society for Philosophical Experiments and Conversations in London. Higgins who also ran a school of practical chemistry in Soho and famously clashed with Priestley over the distribution of credit for a series of experiments related to air distinguished his society from others and anticipated features of later chemical societies by supplementing club-like social opportunities with lectures and experiments." 6 Jan 1794 unknown
