Sir George Bramwell Baron in the Court of Exchequer. Autograph Certificate on vellum regarding an indenture shown to him by Catherine Stein wife of Peter Stein. With a signed affidavit also on vellum signed by Charles Harris Hodgson.
Bramwell's certificate: 28 March 1861. Hodgson's affidavit: Rolls Garden Chancery Lane. 28 March 1861 on vellum document 'Sold by J. Sullivan Printer and Stationer 22 Chancery Lane.'. The two documents are on 33 x 24 cm pieces of vellum and are pinned together. Both in very good condition. Both are printed forms made out by the signatory. Bramwell's certificate begins with the manuscript portions in square brackets: 'These are to Certify that on the Twenty eighth day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one before me the undersigned Sir George William Wilshere Bramwell Knight one of the Barons of Her Majestys Court of Exchequer Appeared personally Catherine Stein the Wife of Peter Stein and produced a certain Indenture marked A'. The document is said by Bramwell to have been made out on 28 March 1861 between 'Richard Langley of the one part and Peter Stein and Catherine Stein his Wife of the other part'. The document is signed at the foot 'P Bramwell'. The second document is headed in print 'In the Common Pleas' and is an affidavit by Charles Harris Hodgson of 10 Salisbury Street Strand on the same topic sworn before Joseph Capp Commissioner 'at the Judges Chambers Rolls Garden Chancery Lane' 28 March 1861 signed 'C. H. Hodgson'. She is signing over her property to her husband pre-Married Woman's Property Act. Bramwell's certificate: 28 March 1861. <p>This soon-to-be 300 year-old tome is a refugee from a conflagration perhaps some religiously fevered book burning of centuries past. Maybe. It certainly looks as though someone snatched it from the edge of flames. Though the work was originally published in Paris in 450 years past in 1565 this leather copy was done in Edinburgh in 1716 one of several republished works around that time signalling a revival of interest in the prolific 16th century Scottish poet and scholar George Buchanan. Since he was known for his first-wave and vigorous Reformational Protestantism this 1716 rekindling no pun intended was perhaps in reaction to the growth of popular interest in The Scottish Pretender to the English throne. In any case this copy was saved just in time to be mostly legible. All this said this is a very rare volume and an historical object and worth preserving.</p><p>Photos on request.</p> Nathanis Chitrai hardcover

Initialled corrected Autograph Copy by George Colman the Younger for his brother-in-law David Morris of a letter to S. J. Arnold written during Colman's chancery dispute with Morris his business partner at the Haymarket Theatre London.
'7 March 1815 Melina Place Westr Road'. 1p. 4to. 31 lines. Fair on aged paper. On paper with watermarked date of 1814. Initialled 'G. C.'; with the words 'Copy to Morris' in the top left-hand corner. Docketed on reverse 'Copy to Morris March 1815'. Colman writes that is is now his intention 'as it ever has been to use every effort in my power for the interest of the Theatre by carrying on the business in the best manner that the continual obstacles opposed to my plans will permit'. He states that he is 'in treaty with various Performers for the approaching Summer'. This enables him to communicate 'propositions' to the recipient and 'Mr Winston'. The second paragraph reads: 'In adopting this only measure you have left me according to the Deed of Ownership I request you to bear in mind that should I be as much impeded in my endeavours as in the Year 1813 the same causes will produce the same ruinous effects.' Should the recipient and Winston prevent Colman's 'formation of an entire last word underlined company of performers . the Theatre must once more in spite of all my struggles - to the contrary remain shut for the Summer'. The fourth paragraph concerns the "instruments" of the stage manager. The Oxford DNB notes that Colman was 'involved in a protracted chancery dispute from 1809 to 1816 with his business partner and brother-in-law David Morris' and that he resided within the King's Bench Rules between 1806 and 1817 at the instigation of 'S. June 1827. On both sides of a piece of wove paper dimensions roughly 8.5 x 20 cm. Cruikshank's signature is approximately 9 cm long with the final letter of his Christian name in superscript. Paper aged and creased with central vertical fold and wear to one edge not affecting text. Recto reads '<.> in the interim - That 2 door Mats be ordered for the use of the Society Adjourned till Thursday 7th June - signed Geoe Cruikshank Monday June 4. General Meeting of the Society Mr Parsonage in the Chair. The Requisition for calling the General Meeting was read by the Secretary'. Reverse reads first line cropped '<.> Thursday 7 June 1827 Mr G. George Dyer poet and English Jacobin writes to the Earl of Buchan following a visit to his seat Dryburgh Abbey Berwickshire. Substantial Autograph Letter Signed 'G Dyer' discussing the preparation of his volume of poems and other topics.
Cambridge. Undated but written shortly before the publication of his poems in 1801. 3pp. 4to. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged with thin stub from mount neatly adhering. A long closely written letter of 116 lines including eight-line postscript at head of first page. Addressed by Dyer on reverse of second leaf: 'To Lord Buchan Dryburgh Abbey Berwickshire Scotland.' Buchan has annotated the reverse of the second leaf: 'George Dyer Characteristic while I reasoned with George Dyer in my Library at Dryburgh Abbey on the Economy of Nature and the Providence of God I said Heaven itself will one day bear witness to my Words. At the instant there was a flash of Lightning so vivid as to deprive us for a moment of Sight This . subject for Poetry' latter part obscured by stub. Both men have interesting entries in the Oxford DNB. Dyer's entry stresses his eccentricity of which the present letter is indeed 'Characteristic'. The main topic is Dyer's obsessive belief that his conversation has in some way offended Buchan and 'given very undesignedly some offence to my friends in Scotland'. Dyer also discusses the preparation for publication of privately-printed 'Poems' of 1801 whose 'Ode XXXIX' is titled 'After visiting Dryburgh Abbey in Berwickshire the Seat of Lord and Lady Buchan'. The poem carries the following footnote: 'This delightful spot now the residence of Lord and Lady Buchan was formerly a monastery. In a part of the chapel are now placed the busts of our English poets. Lord Buchan is well known as a man of letters.' The florid opening paragraph of the letter starts: 'Kind Sir It is unpleasant to write and no less unpleasant to read letters of apology: they move heavily and leave behind nothing worth remembering. The writer feels like a prisoner at the bar and if conscious of crime recollection of civilities received he finds painful and without waiting for the decision of the judge he confesses himself worthy of punishment.' The second paragraph sets out Dyer's specific concerns: 'I intended writing to you from Berwick and to acknowlege sic your civilities to me when at Kelso: but I thought it expedient afterwards to defer writing till after I had been at Richmond more particularly as my mind at the time was quite occupied with poetical reveries though I said nothing on the subject to my ingenious and sensible fellow-traveller. On my arrival in London I expecterd to receive letters from Dr. Anderson the author and editor Dr Robert Anderson 1750-1830 who like Buchan was a member of the American Antiquarian Society to be conveyed to sic me under cover to James Marten: one was to have been a letter to Park from Dr. Anderson as a kind of introductory letter. From Park I expected to hear every thing relative to the Richmond business: but I waited in vain for letters and knew nothing concerning the place for solemnizing the birth-day of Thompson. I was extremely puzzled to account for this silence and was at length unhappy fearful that I had given very undesignedly some offence to my friends in Scotland: I have however since recd: letters perfectly satisfactory from Dr. Anderson and others: having however no letter to Park and the birth day of Thompson having passed by unnoticed I was perplexed and knew not what to say to you.' He gives the gist of a speech made by Buchan 'when I had the pleasure of seeing you at Dryburgh' on the subject of acknowledging the giving of pain by ones words and confesses: 'Now Sir I did recollect having made two speeches of this kind and though probably you may not recollect them or indeed might not have noticed them at the time yet the recollection of them gave pain to me.' He explains at length how he 'wished to apologize' but 'knew not what to say or how to begin'. But now Buchan's 'very civil letter' has 'removed my suspicions that he has given offence and increased my respect for you.' Again he had wished to answer immediately but could not get a frank: 'I had not an opportunity of getting the name of an M.P. as the friends who are kind enough to favour me with their names occasionally were not in town'. He has been 'pedestrianizing backwards & forwards to Cambridge time insensibly stole away … and therefore now write to you from Cambridge though I have no M.P. at hand'. After further apologies and explanations he praises Buchan's 'delightful retreat of Dryburgh Abbey and the learned Hermit residing there' adding: 'you may rest assured yourself that I shall not forget them in my poems ere long to be published. I am at present quite enslaved to Poetry. I am just ready with a volume of poems in which I shall not be forgetful of the hospitality of sic natural beauty of Scotland: The Muse however is obliged to give way for a reason and a violent head-ach a bad substitute supplies its place: a pain which I assure you is not diminished by contemplating the contents of this letter.' He hopes he will have 'the pleasure of revisiting Dryburgh at some future opportunity when I shall be in better spirits than I am at present and when I may be able to express in person what I now do by letter viz: that I have a high sense of your civility and worth.' He may return to Dryburgh with his 'particular' friend James Ramsay Cuthbert of neighbouring Ednam. He has 'delivered' Buchan's 'remembrance to Laetitia. Barbauld D. Gregory & Dr. Tytler' and hopes to see him on his return to town. In the concluding paragraph he states that he has delivered Buchan's 'papers to the Editor of the Monthly Magazine: they as yet have not I perceive made their appearance but owing to no neglect of mine. I delivered them immediately on coming to London: one indeed is I believe precluded from being inserted there as having been published before: the other will I doubt not appear next month'. At the end of the letter Dyer declares that he holds 'some peculiarities of sentiment' and in the postscript he expresses the hope that he will be 'in better spirits' if he has 'occasion to write again to Dryburgh … on a more agreeable topic'. He ends with reference to his 'fellow traveller J. Leyden who was kind enough to accompany me from Edinburgh to Newcastle is very clever; as also is your neighbour Landie the son of the Dissenting minister'. Accompanying the letter is an engraving of Dyer by Henry Meyer from a drawing by 'Miss Beetham' 'Published by Mathews & Leigh 1809'. In good condition in windowpane mount. Cambridge. On letterhead of 96 New Cavendish Street W.1. London . 22 April 1939 . 2pp. 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. The letter is addressed to 'My poor dear' and he writes 'with deepest sympathy' with 'your terrible loss of dear Herman. I little thought that my last visit would be the last.' It is 'perhaps poor consolation' to her but Finck's passing 'hits all his pals very hard indeed. For he was dearly loved by everybody.' He urges her to 'Be brave my dear & be sure we are all thinking of you in this awful time.' 'Ans:' i.e. 'Answered' is written at the head. See Graves's entry in the Oxford DNB. On letterhead of the Department of English Cornell University Ithaca New York. 22 February 1949. 1p. foolscap 8vo. In fair condition aged and lightly creased with some wear to extremities. Healy begins by thanking Duff for his letter and 'for your generosity in sending me copies of the two letters of Daniel Defoe'. He explains that he has 'searched for their whereabouts for about ten years' and had finally become convinced 'that unless they were in your family they were lost'. The next paragraph of 13 lines discusses 'the relationship between the letters and Bowrey's interest in Juan Fernandos' with reference to: the 'presence of Bowrey's jottings' Sir William Temple Selkirk's return to England in October 1711 and the writing of Robinson Crusoe eight years later. He begins the third paragraph by stating that the reason why Bowrey wanted to see Defoe is 'beyond precise explanation' before reproducing a long note he proposes to publish on the subject with reference to 'Bowrey's first enquiry' and 'Mr. Review'. The fourth paragraph concerns 'the pecuniary value of the manuscripts' with Healy stating that 'since all manuscripts are unique that is a hard question'. He explains how the letters might be offered at auction at 'Sotheby's or Hodgson's of London' adding: 'you might do even better some have by offering them to the Rosenbach Company 15 East 51st Street New York City. Rosenbach is willing to pay high prices for good things and he does so cheerfully.' If Duff follows this course of action Healy suggests that he refers to him 'on the subject of authenticity history importance and the like'. The letter concludes with Healy confirming that he would be happy to receive photographs of the letters. George Lillie Craik Scottish literary critic. Four Autograph Letters Signed all 'Geo. L. Craik' to 'the forgotten tenant of Craigcrook' John Hunter
The first letter addressed from Holywood Belfast; the other two in envelopes with Belfast postmarks. Three letters dated 25 July 1861 and 13 and 23 January 1862. The other letter undated. Totalling 16pp. 12mo. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. With two envelopes both initaled 'G. L. C.' with Penny Red postage stamps and Belfast postmarks 13 and 25 January 1862 both addressed by Craik to 'John Hunter Esq: Craigcrook by Edinburgh' also a similar envelope with Belfast postmark dated 27 August 1861 addressed to Hunter at 'Robertson's Lodgings 24 St. Stephen's Green North Dublin'. Chatty friendly letters in a crabbed difficult hand. On 13 January 1862 Craik writes: 'I am very glad you have spoken to Dr. John Brown. I have rather a curious story to tell you about the getting up of the last edition of the Encyc. Brit. if there were time. I am so delighted thhat you agree with me about <> Price's article. I find it <> most people - but it will work its way.' The letter of 23 January 1862 begins: 'My dear Hunter Here is Dodd's most characteristic and interesting letter which I ought perhaps to have returned before. I hope the copy of my book has reached the N. B. North British Review by this time. To my surprise upon receiving a list of the copies sent out I found none for any of the quarterly Reviews. I have recommended strongly that copies should be sent at least to the Edinburgh the Quarterly and the Westminster.' The letter of 25 July 1861 largely concerns 'the Cardross Case'. One letter 'Friday p.m.' makes suggestions for a planned trip to Dublin by Hunter. Hunter was the son of Professor James Hunter 1745-1837 and nephew by marriage of the editor of the Edinburgh Review Francis Jeffrey 1773-1850. Text: The experiments & conversations to which you so kindly invite me to subscribe are I think calculated for those only who have made some advancxement in the study of the Chemical department of Natural Philosophy and my gleanings in this field of science have been sp very profitless that I cannot but be sensible how little qualified I am to become a member of such an institutionas the one proposed. From a sense therefore of my own insufficiency I am induced to decline the invitation held out to me - in addition however to this consideration an evening engagement is hardly compatible with the sacrifices I am in the habit of making to my friends & which meet with considerable interruption in the early months of the year by the relish I have for Italian song and the grander harmony of the sacred drama. I have strictly adhered to your injunctions and answered yourletter with that freedom of sentiment which you urged me to adopt - In your estimation I am satisfied I could not in any other way so strongly evince the sense I entertain of your kind motive for addressing me - accept my warmest thanks .".Note: "In 1794 the Irish physician lecturer and experimentalist Bryan Higgins M.D. 1741-1818 founded the Society for Philosophical Experiments and Conversations in London. Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. Foolscap 8vo. (18 x 12 cm). In Turkish. [iv], 112 p. Rare first Turkish edition of Animal Farm by Orwell in a book form. The novella was serialized in Turkish, 1952 in Cumhuriyet newspaper with Halide Edip Adivar (1884-1964)'s translation. Later in 1954 it was published in a book form by Turkish Ministry of Education again with Halide Edip Adivar's translation. Interestingly, the novella was published under the title New American Literature Series', and this mistake continued until 1990. In the 1990 edition, 'New American Literature' title was removed without any explanation. Four copies in OCLC; (Three in Turkish, one in US libraries). OCLC: 850815315. Not in Fenwick.

Christmas card dated 1970. Photographic Journal article August 1948. ONE: Christmas card. 12mo bifolium with coloured illustration of Christmas candle on cover. Pearson writes: 'FOR corrected from 'from' Edward. A. Carrick from his old inspirer George Pearson 1970'. The association between the two men was warm. In the acknowledgments to his 'Designing for Moving Pictures' 1941 Craig writes that chief among those in the film industry who helped him was 'George Pearson who gave me my first job as Art Director to his film company in 1927 and who has encouraged me ever since.' In the acknowledgments to the revised edition 'Designing for Films' 1947 Pearson's name is the only one given in block capitals as Craig writes: 'To GEORGE PEARSON as friend and teacher a special debt of gratitude is owed for his encouragement at all times has made the future of the films seem worth striving for.' Craig's entry in the Oxford DNB describes his 'first break into the film world. In 1927 Edward Carrick as he was to be known professionally for the rest of his film career began working for the enlightened film-maker George Pearson at the Welsh-Pearson-Elder company at Stoll Studios Cricklewood.' See also Pearson's entry in the Oxford DNB. TWO: 'Photographic Journal' article. 4pp. 4to. Extracted from magazine. 'This paper illustrated by films was read by Mr. Pearson at the Western Conference on 29 February 1948.' In fair condition with slight discoloration to one corner. 17 January 1803; Stanhope Street London. 8vo 1 p. Text clear and complete. On aged and creased paper with chipping to extremities. Thin strip of stub adhering to reverse which carries the address in Sanderson's hand: 'Mr: Lowry No: 57 Tichfield St:'. He asks him to 'send the Books by the Bearer. I find my self better & am in hopes of goeing out in a Day or two if weather permits'. He concludes by sending his compliments to Lowry's wife and daughters. Docketed in a contemporary hand at foot of page: 'One of the greatest Mathematicians of this country Originally and occasionally till his Death a Taylor'. Sanderson's trade is not mentioned in his obituary in the New Monthly Magazine February 1814 pp.91-2 where he is said to have been indebted in his last years to 'the liberality and care of his friends Sir John and Lady Walsh and Mr. Burgoyne whose proficiency in mathematics had enabled them justly to appreciate his extraordinary talent and acquirements'. The obituary notes his acquaintance with 'Lauden Todd Maskelyne Wales Hutton Dalby and Bonnycastle'. 17 January 1803; Stanhope Street, London. unknown
