The bulk of the text constitutes the posthumous papers of a recondite - yet venal - retired Glaswegian schoolmaster, named John Tunnock (as in the celebrated tea cake), that have, seemingly, been edited and collated by Gray himself. 'This literary subterfuge serves to fool no one who needs fooling, yet will satisfy all who believe that the truth can be found more exactly in chance occurrences, serendipity, and the eggy scrapings from the breakfast plates of the neglected, than any crude, linear naturalism. 'Tunnock is a beguiling figure, at once feisty and fusty. His historical fictions chivvy us into Periclean Athens, Renaissance Italy and then bury our noses in the ordure of sanctity given off by charismatic Victorian religious sectaries. Excursions into geological time are placed in counterpoint to diaristic jottings describing Tunnock's own erotic misadventures and the millennial trivia of the Anthony Linton Blair Government's final five years. Sein Vater war Fabrikarbeiter und wurde im Ersten Weltkrieg verwundet. Seine Mutter war Verkäuferin. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde Gray zunächst nach Perthshire und dann nach Lanarkshire evakuiert. Diese Erlebnisse beeinflussten später seine literarischen Arbeiten. Die Familie lebte in einer Sozialsiedlung, und Gray bezog seine erste Bildung aus einer Kombination von staatlicher Schule, öffentlichen Büchereien und öffentlichem Rundfunk ? laut Gray ?die Art von Bildung, die britische Regierungen heutzutage als nutzlos betrachten, besonders für Kinder der Arbeiterklasse?. Alasdair Gray war von 1961 bis 1970 mit Inge Sorenson und von 1991 bis 2014 mit Morag McAlpine verheiratet. Er hatte einen Sohn (* 1964). Mary Anne Thompson Clarke (1776-1852) became the mistress of Prince Frederick Augustus (1763-1827) Duke of York in 1803, while he was Commander-in-Chief of British forces. He set her up in a fashionable residence, but failed to supply the funds necessary to support their lavish lifestyle. In 1809, a national scandal arose when Clarke testified before the House of Commons that she had sold army commissions with the Duke of York's knowledge. Frederick was forced to resign from his position. A select committee was appointed by the British House of Commons to enquire into the matter. The parliament eventually acquitted the Duke of having received bribes by 278 votes to 196. He nevertheless resigned because of the high tally against him. In 1811, after it was revealed that Clarke had received payment from the Duke's disgraced chief accuser, Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle (1762?-1833), the Prince Regent reappointed the now exonerated Duke of York as commander-in-chief. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! ‎Two undated; the rest between 1951 and 1959. On various letterheads of 39 and 47 Whitehall Court London. Five of the items are 8vo with the other on a 12mo slip. All texts clear and complete. Fair on slightly-aged and worn paper. A total of five typed 8vo pages and two autograph 8vo and two autograph 12mo pages. Four of the lettters have 'The Fol-de-Rols' printed on the letterhead. Dealing with practical everyday theatre matters with Newman writing for example on 19 November 1955: 'I have bought a few costume from the "Punch" Revue which died an early death at the Duke of York's theatre last Saturday. I made room for them in one of the cupboards in the corridor by moving a set of old Fol dresses into the large crate alongside which was only half filled with dogs and hard props.'
