‎On embossed letterhead of 4 Wyndham Crescent Junction Road London . 28 December 1881. See both men's entries in the Oxford DNB. 2pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. The present letter was written as Walford – having resigned the editorship of the Antiquary in acrimonious circumstances – was preparing to launch the Antiquarian Magazine and Bibliographer renamed Walford's Antiquarian Magazine and Bibliographical Review in 1885. It would cease publication in 1886. In the letter after thanking Walford for his 'very kindly review' Cussans writes: 'If the first number of your new Magazine be a fair specimen of those to follow its success is certain. Every one of the contributors whose names you announce is a good man and in future I shall look forward to the first of the ensuing month with anticipation of pleasure.' As it is 'too late to send you a Xmas card' he is enclosing one for the new year: 'It is somewhat antiquated but that is no dismerit. It may perhaps find a place among the other “Crosby Papers†I sent you. This playbill is the one I looked for in my desk in the City but could not find.' ‎John Farleigh wood engraver. Wood-engraving of naked black girl with African man with garland of flowers around his groin in same style as those for Bernard Shaw's 'Adventures of the Black Girl in her Search for God'. Apparently unpublished.‎

‎Place and date not stated. London circa 1932. Printed in black on one side of piece of 33 x 20 cm thick paper full page containg image 20 x 13cm. Dimensions of print 23 x 13.5 cm largest image in book 15 x 9.5cm . In good condition on lightly aged and creased paper with slight foxing. The image depicts: on the left and extending the height of the print an athletically-built black man naked but for wreaths of flowers across his brow and his groin penis and scrotum evident leaning forward to proffer a flower to a naked black girl the "Black Girl in Search" 17cm high viewed from the back whose left arm is raised while her right is behind her back holding a flower. According to Farleigh's entry in the Oxford DNB he 'achieved wide acclaim and recognition for his illustrations to The Adventures of the Black Girl in her Search for God written by George Bernard Shaw and published by Constable in 1932. Shaw commissioned Farleigh after requesting a trial drawing and was closely involved in the designs. Farleigh duly acknowledged Shaw's input in his partly autobiographical work Graven Image 1940 where he gave a detailed account of the progress of the book. Shaw's witty satirical text and Farleigh's quasi-erotic depictions of the African girl ‘a fine creature whose satin skin and shining muscles made the missionary folk seem like ashen ghosts’ Shaw The Black Girl 1932 8 guaranteed its success. The first edition of 25000 copies priced inexpensively at 2s. 6d. was sold immediately. This was the first mass-produced book of the period to contain wood-engravings and it was effective in popularizing the medium for commercial book illustration as well as for the private presses.' No information has been found concerning this woodcut in Farleigh's "Graven Image" or elsewhere but one reviewer found "sexual symbolism" which he didn't know if Farleigh was aware of ! "Graven Image" p.268. Recalling how a character in "Happy Days" set in the 'fifties could only find images of naked or near naked women in National Geographic African scenes could "Adventures" have provided pin-ups suited to its era! ‎No date 1940s. Stamped ‘FOR & ON BEHALF OF / THE NEW ENGLISH WEEKLY. / 15 REGENT’S PARK TERRACE / GULiver 3875’. On one side of a 12mo a piece of grey-green paper; creased worn and torn at the bottom. A fifteen-line poem in five three-line stanzas titled ‘REST’. At end: ‘JOHN GAWSWORTH’. Proof directions in pencil to convert a full-stop at the end of the fourth stanza to a comma. While the poet's attempt at direct simplicity verges on triteness one should recall that he served manfully in the RAF: ‘Beneath the oaks the soldiers lie / Staring at the open sky / Drowsily lazily. / Like England is this plot of green / But in the mountains all unseen / The guns’ complaint affects the scene. / Death is abroad this sunny day. / Life has no time for idle play: / Soon these will go their comrades’ way. / Meanwhile the oaks throw chequered shade / Upon the brows of many a blade / Still eager and still unafraid / And overhead the clouds scud on / Unto their own oblivion / Whence soon these men too will be gone.’ Apparently published in the Briarcliffe Quarterly - Volumes 1-12 - Page 50 1944 but Google don't even give a snippet. ‎5 March 1888; St Albans Hertfordshire. 12mo: 3 pp. Good on lightly-aged paper. Concerns Pryor's posthumous 'Flora of Hertfordshire' 1887 which contained an introduction co-written by Hopkinson. Four copies of the book are being presented to Mrs Pryor 'by our Society'. 'This is partly the cause of the delay in sending them to you for we had to wait for authority from the Council of the Society to present them.' The rest of the letter concerns the large paper edition of the book a copy of which Hopkinson offers to procure for Mrs Pryor 'at the subscription price'. 'As only 50 of these have been printed we decided at the first not to give a single copy away except the one we were bound to send to the British Museum . Being away from home and his papers he cannot answer all the recipient's questions but 'it will be enough if I say that I shall not require an Organ & that the Illustrations to my lecture would or might be made to consist exclusively of unaccompanied vocal music mostly English. The effect of some pieces might be increased by being performed chorally - say with three or four good voices to a part but they will all admit of performance by one voice to a part'. He assumes that St Andrew's Hall 'can hardly be worse adapted for speaking in than the room in which I lecture sometimes at Edinburgh which is cruciform & holds 2500 people'. He comments on the practice of lecturing before concluding with the suggestion that 'all the Illustrations might be very safely left to the Cathedral Choir'. I find a letter of your’s respecting Woodcock’s little game produced in 1864 & two one act farces you offer me £15 per Act with the privilege of repurchasing the pieces at the same price in the event of your not having produced them’.
