‎FRED ENGLISH‎

‎1927 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY OF ONE BOSTON COUPLE'S CRUISE ABOARD AN ILL-FATED SHIP THAT WOULD ONE DAY SADLY BOAST THE COSTLIEST BRITISH LOSS AT SEA IN NAVAL HISTORY‎

‎ABOARD THE S.S. LANCASTRIA TO EUROPE. Good. 1927. On offer is a delightful original manuscript travel diary dated 1927 wherein Fred English with his wife Cora writes of his adventures and observations while aboard the S.S. Lancastria as well as his travels and adventures in England France Ireland etc. He writes of going to Blarney Castle and other castles seeing Lord Barrymore's estate and going to Killarney Dublin Brussels and many many other places! He begins: "S.S. Lancastria at Sea" - These notes are written for my own use. I am mailing them home that others may perhaps enjoy some of our pleasures. Please read them and then mail them immediately to the next on the list he then lists a lot of peoples names Don't forget that I want to use them when I return. Please see that none are lost". Here are some snippets: "Saturday August 27 1927 - Embarked at East Boston at 4:50 p.m. 10th Calvary Band playing. Bon Voyage by official representative of city. Escorted down harbor by Fire Boat playing four streams hose. Many vessels saluted with whistles. Three women and a boy failed to get off and were taken off down a ladder to a tug. It has rained all day. Have dropped pilot and are proceeding to sea. Found we were both booked together in J4 so far no sign of sea sickness. Am now waiting for dinner second sitting at 7 p.m. in to dinner at Table 3. Mr & Mrs Cain of N.Y. table companions. Enjoyed dinner five courses excellent service. Back on deck sea not rough but fog has shut down fog horn blows every minute. Watched sea and talked until 9:30 p.m. then seven times around deck equal one mile. Cora has taken a dose of Mothersill's pills as a prevention against sea sickness. Really doesn't need if no rougher than now. This day has been a big experience . It is as hot as it ever gets in Aroostook. The dining room is really too hot to eat in. We have a table stewart who tries hard to please but has a difficult time he is always in his own way . We had an impressive Memorial Service for sailors lost at sea 8 gold star mothers strewed flowers on water. We lost our table companions Mr & Mrs Cain. They moved to C deck - We had a good sing last night and a symphony concert by the ships orchestra. This morning wireless reports that Brock and Schlee had crossed the Atlantic in 23 hr. and 19 min. Had a wonderful day on deck. In the afternoon we played shuffleboard and ball on top deck. In the evening we danced a little . Now sailing directly towards Queenstown - Tonight the water has a larger swell and the ship is beginning to roll and pitch. So far the sensation is not bad. Some are beginning to feel sick again - There is to be dancing if the roll does not prevent. Saw a large school of flying fish seemed to be either white or silver color. Sometimes they take a flight of perhaps a hundred yards. There is a very jolly crowd on board who are bent on enjoying themselves - We saw schools of porpoises yesterday wish we might see a whale . We have enjoyed life on the boat. Time passes rapidly - There are two or three real characters on board. One Greenly from Boston a very fat good natural cuss from Boston. He brought aboard about 50 bottles of drink and a couple cases of oranges. He nearly missed the boat but arrived in time a dress coat over his arm part of which had been dropped in the mud. Neverless he was feeling glorious and has been ever since - Last night we sighted a passenger ship about five or six miles north sailing towards America. We have seen a number of freighters. They make the sea less lonely. - There are a small number aboard who are trying to drink the bar dry with fair success. We are in touch with land by wireless. We could radiogram home but would cost about four dollars. When we realize the expanse of ocean we feel that Lindberg had colossal nerve to attempt its passage all alone . It is fun to dance aboard except when the ship gives an extra roll the dancers go crashing into the wall or into the rail . We have the run of the ship which is worth a good deal. Our room is fairly good though small. I believe I would rather have the cheapest room aboard with run of ship than a better room say second class without run of the ship . Clancy our table steward is having a wonderful time telling us English customs. One of the cleverest jokes of last evening was a passenger who dressed as a steward. He had an English face even to that dumb look they have when they do not understand. He went into the smoking room and about the deck taking orders from many people who were not wise to the joke much to the amusement of those who were . Memorial for Lusitania in fore lounge over or nearly over spot where she sank . We arrived in Paris about 10 a.m. - After breakfast we took a train or street car to Trocadeors Convention Hedges. The parade was to start at 1:30 so we found the place were Mainse was to form. It was near Place D'lena which contains Geo Washingtons equestrian statue. While admiring the statue we noticed Hotel D'lena facing it. Then it occurred to Cora that the Mac Manuses were stopping at that hotel. We proceeded to find them. Crossing the square we heard our names called. Sure enough there they were on an iron balcony watching the parade form. We went up watched the parade form and pass until the ___ section came along then we joined and paraded. Talk about thrills. Flying could not compare. Up Rue D'Iena to the Arc dr Triomphe where we threw flowers on the unknown soldiers tomb - It was a National French Holiday declared for the occasion. The Stars and Stripes flew from the Eiffel Tower for the first time in history. It seemed millions of people lined the streets all cheering - No not all for it was reported that a few hissed. Both sides of the street were lined with soldiers with drawn bayonets. Every square had a troop of Calvalry or mounted guards. Every corner a squad of gendarmes ready to turn in any direction. It was expected that some demonstration would be made against Massachusetts but none came. There was a thrill to this parade that words cannot describe. It made me shiver and quiver. The Soldiers of a Nation parading the streets of the capital city of another cheered by its populace. One of the objects of this convention was to cement the two people together. I believe that it went a long way towards accomplishing its purpose." HISTORICAL NOTES: Originally named Tyrrhenia the S.S. Lancastria was the sister of Cameronia II of the Anchor Line which Cunard owned from 1911 until 1935. Built by Wm. Beardmore & Co. of Glasgow the Tyrrhenia was launched in 1920 and made her maiden voyage Glasgow-Quebec-Montreal on June 13 1922. She then ran from Liverpool to Canada Boston or New York until placed on the Hamburg-New York route in 1923. Refitted and renamed Lancastria during the winter of 1923-34 she then served New York from Liverpool Southampton or London until 1932 after which Lancastria was used mostly for cruising. Requisitioned for use as a troopship in 1940 Lancastria was bombed and sunk at St. Nazaire on 17 June 1940 during the evacuation of France. As many as 9000 people mostly British troops were on board. At least 3000 and perhaps as many as 5000 died in the costliest British merchant ship loss of the war. Winston Churchill felt the country's morale could not bear the burden of such terrible news and newspapers were ordered not to print the story. Survivors were forbidden under the King's Regulations to mention the disaster and people killed were listed as "missing in action". This led to the assumption by most bereaved relatives that they probably died during the bloody retreat through France. However the story of the sinking finally broke in New York newspapers on July 26 1940 and was soon afterwards taken up by the British press. The official report is still sealed until the year 2040 under the Official Secrets Act. If it could be proved that Sharpe was ordered by Ministry of Defense Officials to ignore his maximum load restriction there could be considerable grounds for compensation claims against the British Government. Currently the evidence for this remains under lock and key for another 31 years. The diary has 50 pages filled with handwritten entries plus there are an additional 12 pages with notations on his purchases cost of the trip etc. 4 1/2" x 7 1/4" and it is VG.; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: SS LANCASTRIA OCEAN TRAVEL TYRRHENIA EVACUATION OF FRANCE POST WORLD WAR I WWI HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA Als antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . unknown‎

‎Fred Grubb [Frederick Grubb] (born 1930), English poet [Derek Stanford (1918-2008), English writer; 1960s Hampstead coterie]:‎

‎Four Typed Letters Signed and two Autograph Cards Signed from the Hampstead poet Frederick Grubb one in full four 'Fredk G' and one 'Comrade G' to the critic Derek Stanford including a virulent attack and with two other items signed by Grubb.‎

‎1973 and 1974; most from 243 Haverstock Hill Hampstead. All items clear and complete on aged paper. Letters totaling: 4to 1 p; landscape 8vo 5 pp. The two cards carry long messages written in red ink in Grubb's close neat hand; one is standard size the other 27 x 13.5 cm. Five envelopes are stapled to their letters. Grubb 'one of the last survivors of the famous 1960s Hampstead coterie of writers actors and critics' writes entertainingly in an emphatic energetic manner marvellously evocative of the 1970s London literary scene. Grubb mounts an extraordinarily savage attack on Stanford after sending him two pages of publicity material relating to a 1973 'Benefit for Chilean Workers & Refugees. Pablo Neruda Memorial Reading' one page signed by Grubb and the other with autograph note by him reading 'Fuck the dim and mawkish 1890's - what's needed is the vital spirit of the 1930's and 1970's!' Grubb's comment on the 1890s - a subject on which Stanford was an authority - elicits a mocking christmas card from the critic containing the comment 'Do not "Fuck the Nineties" - a misplaced piece of virility when there are so many Women's Lib vaginas ready to provide a more suitable receptacle.' A furious Grubb replies December 1973: 'I do not invite an acquaintance to donate to a fund in order to get insulted myself and worse to see my cause vilified by third-rate quips. . I am amazed by your casual assumption that beliefs of deep significance to somebody can be gibed at in your petty way. Then I recall that as a typical English conformist and opportunist you just can not see or understand anything beyond the narrow horizon of your complacency and comfords. . you are among the more servile corrupter dunces I've bumped into. Drop dead and I wouldn't spit on your grave let alone put on a Memorial Reading.' In a postscript Grubb responds directly to the 'Women's Lib' comment stating that he wouldn't introduce his 'delightful and bright if non-puritan Hungarian Communist Party girl' to 'scum like you hardened in vulgarity and cynicism. You boasted - "I write in Tribune for the free tickets". Not because you believe in any cause. I detest hypocrites.' In a long letter of 'Dec/Jan 1974' headed 'Kremlin' Grubb attempts at reconciliation. 'My remarks were never aimed to hurt. It's simply that as a Marxist in a deeply reactionary conformist and conventional society . I've found that the only way to get anything to "register" to rub off on the bourgeois is by absolute polemical force a thorough kick in the arse.' Other topics include: a long discussion of Philip Larkin's 'largely iniquitous anthology' 'The Oxford Book of Twentieth Century English Verse': 'Frankly I didn't "expect" to be in the anthology I can't imagine any qualifying poem! but that doesn't prevent me from agreeing largely with your strictures . Larkin's worst crime in my view is to chicken out of an ideocritical Preface whereby even Yeats had the courage to try to justify his eccentricities.' Grubb's political position: 'I'm NOT a Leavisite never have been. No Marxist could be! . Frankly you've got an obsession with Leavis. When I agree with him it's usually to my own surprise!' The present political situation: 'I hope to find in the Soviet Union a more morally and culturally vital and committed society than in England where free love may exist without prostitution and Heath and Thatcher don't prate about "standards and values and education" while Lambton Harrovian & Jellicoe Etonian pay prostitutes £500 a night when the money should go to the homeless the exploited the unemployed the W.E.A. etc.' Also included is a photocopied page with three newspaper cuttings with initialed note by Grubb to 'Comrade Stanford'. One of the cuttings is of a letter by Grubb to The Times 10 December 1973 attacking W. H. Auden's later period. In a postcard January 1974 Grubb defends his position on 'The betrayal in late Auden' 'duplicity of tone dodgy values artificial versification trite and willed subjects'. In the last letter 31 May 1974 Grubb refers to his 'edition of Roberts's poetry and criticism for Carcanet to join their eds. of Rickwood Hamburger and Edwin Morgan. I may or may not be allowed to include Cornford and Bell with Roberts. These 1930's people are the best: nothing like it has happenned sic since.' Grubb's politics are to the fore throughout: he refers to Lenin as 'our leader and teacher' sends a couple of letters from the 'Revolutionary H.Q.' and signs another off 'For the total destruction of the Tory party of the British capitalist class of all genteel compalcency and the transformation of man and of life. Red front!' 1973 and 1974; most from 243 Haverstock Hill, Hampstead. unknown‎

‎Frederic Harrison (1831-1923), English historian, biographer, essayist and positivist:‎

‎‘It is now not safe to take a newspaper paragraph report’: Frederic Harrison English historian and positivist. Autograph Letter Signed declining to enter into an argument on property as his views have been misrepresented.‎

‎4 February no year; on letterhead of 38 Westbourne Terrace W. London. See his long but strangely-cagey entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. On a bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once. Signed ‘Frederic Harrison.’ The recipient is not named. The letter begins: ‘Madam I am obliged to you for your interesting letter. I do not enter an argument because it is founded on a few sentences which give a very imperfect idea of what I said on Sunday last.’ He does not dispute many of her assertions and as for ‘the usefulness of larger landlords’ he has ‘repeatedly urged it in my addresses’. He refers her to his paper ‘Report of the Industrial Remuneration Conference 1885. Cassells. 2s/6d’. He ends with the observation that ‘it is now not safe to take a newspaper paragraph report of the speeches of any public man’. In pencil in another hand at foot of second page: ‘Written in reply to mother’. 4 February [no year]; on letterhead of 38 Westbourne Terrace, W. [London.] unknown‎

‎Frederic Yates [born Frederic Keeping] (1854-1919), English artist active in America before returning to England and settling in‎

‎Frederic Yates English artist active in America. Autograph Letter Signed 'Fredc Yates' to Mrs Oldham describing in moving terms the funeral of Anne Oldham.‎

‎17 May 1895 on letterhead of 3a Portman Mansions W. London. Yates studied in Paris before setting up a successful practice in San Francisco also teaching there at the Art Student League. His portraits include the educator John Haden Badley and the only president of Hawaii Sanford Ballard Dole. He returned to England in 1900 but was invited back to America to attend the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson and to paint his portrait. Wilson presented Yates with the flag that his hand rested on whilst he took his oath of office. The Oldham family moved in artistic circles and Constance Oldham was John Ruskin's god-daughter and corresponded with him. Other papers suggest that the recipient was resident at Walpole Chislehurst Kent. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once. A pencil note at the head of the first page gives the subject as the 'funeral of Anne Oldham'. A moving description of a Victorian funeral beginning: 'My dear Mrs Oldham A short letter it shall be but allow me this privilege of writing you. - You could not be at the service but you will know how everyone was thinking of you and I thought you may like to hear from one outside of your family how nicely and quietly everything passed off'. He proceeds to describe the 'quietly conducted' service on 'a beautiful peaceful afternoon'. After naming the pieces played by the organist he writes: 'Everyone sang. It was good to see your old manservant William there – and some of your other faithful ones – they came up and wished me “good day†but I could not remember exactly who they were.' He lists some of the mourners: 'Mr. Townsend and his little daughter – The Preby and his boy. - Mrs Thomas and one or two grand old heads these will remain in my memory.' He wishes he could make her 'feel the love and harmony of all present – The choir boys sang very well rustic and primitive enough their surplices blown by the wind in the open air as they put your dear one to her last resting place.' He ends touchingly: 'God give you peace dear friend I have some knowledge of your loss and I loved her too'. 17 May 1895, on letterhead of 3a Portman Mansions, W. [London] unknown‎

‎Frederic Yates [born Frederic Keeping] (1854-1919), English artist who found fame in America before settling in the Lake Distric‎

‎Frederic Yates English artist active in America. Autograph Letter Signed 'Fred Yates' to Mrs Oldham describing his examination of the wreck of HMS Foudroyant for a painting she has commissioned. With sketches of the ship in ink and pencil.‎

‎Letter: 'Sunday noon' no date. On letterhead of the Royal Hotel Devonport. Pencil sketches without date or place. Two items: a letter and two pages of pencil sketches. LETTER: 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. Other papers suggest that the recipient was resident at Walpole Chislehurst Kent. The subject of the letter is a painting Yates is planning of HMS Foudroyant present whereabouts unknown evidently commissioned by the recipient. Yates is an excellent letter writer and he begins by giving Mrs Oldham the details of his journey to Devonport 'after a most pleasant journey coming down by the Great Western'. He 'arrived at Plymouth but came on to Devonport knowing the old warships are nearer this neighbourhood than Plymouth'. He continues: 'The “Foudroyant†lies out in the stream and can only just be distinguished from her neighbours from the shore. - I engaged a boatman and sailed round her and have quite decided what kind of a picture to paint.' Beneath this Yates has drawn a small simple ink sketch of the wreck of the ship. He continues: 'The snow was falling and the wind terribly keen - the boat man with a thin jersey on looking quite used to the weather I in overcoat hugging my knees together my teeth chattering – a regular landlubber.' There follows another ink sketch of the scene he has just described with the two men in their boat in the rain and the ship in the background. He continues: 'I have engaged this craft for tomorrow at 8.30 – weather permitting and in the evening will report progress to you – this county is full of beauty around Exeter the place looked the very home for a painter'. He adds regretfully: 'I wish some portraits were wanted down here then I would run down for two months in the summer. He asks for 'a Postal Order for £3' as he 'did not bring enough and the railway costs more than I expected and the cost of a boat I had not calculated. I am improvident.' PENCIL SKETCHES: On both sides of a 12mo piece of paper. In good condition with four fold lines one of which has a short closed tear at edge. On one side of the paper are two simple sketches the top one showing the wreck of HMS Foudroyant at sea captioned 'As she is' with side note indicating what are 'not masts only stumps'; beneath this another sketch of a ship 'As other ships of the same date now are'. On the other side of the paper is a larger sketch showing Foudroyant in her prime captioned by Yates 'What I suppose must have been'. The letter must have been written after 1884 when the Foudroyant which had been Nelson's flagship for a couple of years ceased to be a training vessel. In 1897 she was towed to Blackpool and in the same year she was wrecked in a violent storm damaging the North Pier in the process. Wood from the ship lines the boardroom of Blackpool Football Club and medals were struck from copper salvaged from the wreck. Letter: 'Sunday noon' [no date]. On letterhead of the Royal Hotel, Devonport. Pencil sketches without date or place. unknown‎
